Plot summary - questions

[edit]

Now that any copyright violation has been cleaned out by a thorough rewrite, there are some questions remaining, which only our esteemed Malayam-speaking editors can truly resolve:

  1. Which is the name in the film credits? Ravisankar? or Ravi Shankar? The film is the primary source for now. IMDB is user-generated, and can only be used to support other reliable sources.
  2. Is there a distributor or seller whose cast list exactly matches the film?
  3. There is source conflict about the old man: Bharathmohanlal says he is "Jayaram's (Ravisankar's) uncle", while IMDB says he is "Ravi Shankar's Grandfather", but MayalamMovies just says "rich man". The old man is surely the grandfather of the girls, but is he Ravisankar's uncle? If so, then it was his money Ravisankar lost on the investment, and he to whom Ravisankar lied, and it means Ravisankar has known the five girls for years. Is this the correct interpretation?
  4. The kitten arrives early in the film. Does it arrive with the news of the family visit? Or separately?

--Lexein (talk) 03:52, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is what I feel or understand about the movie.
    1. I feel that we need not worry about the hero's name in the movie. Ravisankar and Ravi Shankar are pronounced essentially the same in India, or atleast in Malayalam, the language of the movie.
    2. The movie was released in 1998, when not even computers were popular in India. The movie will not have any website and probably not Siyad Koker, the producer of the movie who produced it under the banner of Kokers Films. I found these links which could be helpful ([1], [2]), but not a comprehensive list of the cast involved.
    3. The old man is either Ravishankar's uncle or grand father itself, but not just a friendly neighbor or anything similar. It was his money that Ravishankar lost and ravishankar has known the five girls for years since they all are his cousins.
    4. The kitten arrives before the family visit. In fact, one of the girls sent the kitten in advance when they came to know that they are going to visit Ravi's place just to have fun with him.

Wow

[edit]

Sreejith has done a good work....

4. Kitten is arriving with this news My dear Muracherukkan (മുറച്ചെറുക്കന്‍)cat, Without knowing other girl cats, i am coming. Do you know who i am. I will be there to here it from you

Muracherukkan = a man who is, customarily a girl's groom

Yes, thanks for the references, Sreejith. I'm pretty happy with my copyediting, too.

  1. and
  2. It's now "Ravishankar" just as shown in Jayaram#1990s. This matches dialogue and a painted sign in the film at 09:54 - "RAVISHANKER'S FARM" - despite the 'e', it's all one word. Plus, all the other characters are singly named, and it seems the most popular form of the name in many Indian movies.
  3. At 15:00 Dennis says "Uncles. Aunties. Cousins," in English, and that's good enough for me. But I'm still curious: in the end credits is it "uncle" or "grandfather" or neither?
  4. Yes at 06:42, after the kitten has been in the house for a few minutes, the note announcing the visit falls out of the kitten carrier and is read aloud by Ravishankar. Thanks for the translation, Kalarickan

  1. its Ravisankar, When it denotes the farm it will be called as Ravisanker's or Sanker's farm both are okay Like Jimmy is written as Gimmy, both pronounce same..if it is written as "Ravisankar's farm" it will not pronounce good.
  2. Dennis can call them uncle, because its a traditional custom of kerala, that those who are attached to the family will be treated as a member of their family and they can call whatever the same degree relatives calls..(Dennis copying jayaram's relation)
  3. Trans - "I am coming to bethlehem on next summer, catch me if you can" -- The handkerchief from train

--Kalarickan (talk) 15:21, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So we agree, it's "Ravishankar" (one word, with "h"), for the reasons I've stated, and these framegrabs, which both have the "h" Ravishenker's Farm 09:54 and Shankbury 10:55 (on the far right).
My last question: in the end credits starting at 4:38 in this YouTube video, what is Janardhanan listed as playing? Uncle? Grandfather? Colonel C.R. Menon?

Thanks for all the help. --Lexein (talk) 16:34, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Most funny part is that, its not listed anywhere in the movie, And at the end credits it is not mentioned. mentioning the actors name and their characters is up to the director...--Kalarickan (talk) 20:24, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for checking. I feared there might not be actor credits. Hopefully the practice of optionally listing actors will change with time, if only to help folks who are writing encyclopedias! :) --Lexein (talk) 20:59, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
