Dimensions incorrect and claims about size excessive

[edit]

The article gives an area of 70 sq km and also claims it is the biggest artificial lake in America (North, Central & South)! This is clearly incorrect for several reasons.

a) Looking at Google maps I would estimate the area to be nearer to 17 sq km. It is only 13.5 km long and 2.5 km wide at its widest point! (I would be happy to accept the 19.34 sq km suggested in the next point.)

b) While the article gives no references it does link to 3 external websites, the 1st of which give the following information in Spanish:

El Embalse Calima fue construido por la empresa PERINI e inaugurado en 1966. La dimensión de su embalse es de 13 Kilómetros de largo por 1,5 Kilómetros de ancho, la superficie inundada es de 1934 hectáreas, el volumen total almacenado 581 millones de M3. I do not read Spanish but I think is says the area is 1934 hectares (19.34 sq km) it is 13 km long and 1.5 km wide (not agreeing with Google maps, but a lot closer) with a volume of 581,000,000 cu m.

c) Even if the claimed 70 sq km was correct there are many much larger reservoirs in South America. e.g. Yacyretá Dam in Argentina with an area of 1650 sq km!

Since I am not sure of my Spanish I have not just edited the article but raised it here in the hope someone else can confirm my translation of the Spanish and perhaps have access to other sources to confirm or disprove my thoughts. MWchat (talk) 09:12, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
