Lee Chaolan (Chinese: 李 超狼 Pinyin: Lǐ Chāoláng, Japanese: リー・チャオラン Rī Chaoran) is a fictional Chinese-Japanese character from the Tekken fighting game series.

History

Before Tekken - Tekken

Lee Chaolan is Kazuya Mishima's foster brother, and Heihachi Mishima's adopted son. Of Chinese and Japanese ancestry, Lee's parents died when he was a young child, leaving him to fend for himself on the streets. Facing a hostile environment each day, Lee quickly became a skilled scrapper with reflexes that were amazing for a boy his age. It was these qualities that caught the eye of Heihachi, who witnessed Lee fighting off several other kids while on a business trip. Impressed by his natural ability, Heihachi decided to adopt Lee, and took him back to Japan to be educated. It is not known if he actually felt any emotion towards the orphan; it has been suggested that he simply raised him to replace his blood son Kazuya, whom he had at first considered to be too weak to inherit the Zaibatsu. Another possibility is that Heihachi wanted to give Kazuya a rival to inspire him to shape up.

Before the events of the original Tekken, Heihachi sent Lee to the U.S. to handle the Mishima Zaibatsu's operations there, and to continue his business education. While Heihachi trained Kazuya in the art of Mishima Style Fighting Karate, Lee studied with Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law in the U.S. This is the reason for some of the moves that Lee shares with Paul and Marshall Law.

Tekken 2 - Tekken 3

When Kazuya took the Zaibatsu from Heihachi, Lee decided to work with his brother. Considering the rather demeaning position he received (is known by Kazuya as his secretary), it can be assumed that he did so only to be in a good position to overthrow Kazuya should the chance present itself. Lee was known to be the boss of Kazuya's cadre of personal bodyguards (Anna Williams, Bruce Irvin, Ganryu), and he also supervised Doctor Boskonovitch's projects for creating the ultimate military animal for Kazuya.

Lee fought in the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, his intention being to snatch the Zaibatsu from Kazuya. However, Heihachi returned from his supposed demise and defeated both Lee and Kazuya; he threw the latter into the mouth of an active volcano, and banished his adopted son from any aspect of his life or the Zaibatsu on the threat of death. Lee remained in Japan for a time afterwards, plotting to assassinate Heihachi as an act of retribution. However, he eventually came to the epiphany that it was a waste to murder an old man, who probably had only a few more years to live anyways. Thus, he left for America once again, and began setting the foundations for his longtime ambition; a robotics corporation. More importantly, he decided to distance himself from fighting; ultimately, he went into seclusion in the Bahamas to amass his own fortune.

Sometime before The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3, Lee was apparently one of the fighters that was attacked by Ogre, as Ogre has some of Lee's moves (including the Laser Edge Kick Combo). However, as he appears alive and well in Tekken 4 and Tekken 5, if he was attacked by Ogre, it's clear that Lee survived the attack.

Tekken 4

Lee as Violet.

Returning in the fourth tournament, Lee is a successful businessman and C.E.O. of his now flourishing robotics corporation. He lives his days behind the sun-bathed walls of his Bahamas mansion, dividing his time between trading stocks online and simply relaxing, seemingly without a care in the world. Then one day, he discovers a huge selloff of G Corporation's stock online; he goes on to learn that it was triggered by an attack on its main research lab by the Mishima Zaibatsu's Tekken Force. Days later, the 4th Iron Fist tournament was announced. Lee senses that something is amiss; but at the same time his fadding passion for fighting is rekindled, along with his fierce resentment for the Mishima clan. He decides to enter the tournament. As a precaution that the Zaibatsu would not figure out his identity too early, he enters online under the name "Violet", and he dyes his silver hair purple and sports sunglasses, as well as violet clothes.

It is suggested that Lee was rather successful and made it to the later phases of the tournament. However, he is shocked to see that his next opponent is none other than Kazuya, who was resurrected by G Corporation many years ago. Losing his focus, Lee is defeated by his foster brother, who goes on to face Heihachi.

Tekken 5

In the confusion surrounding the death of Heihachi, Lee was scheming to take over the Mishima Zaibatsu but was enraged when he learned that someone else had already beat him to it.

Lee, believing it was Kazuya who usurped the Mishima Zaibatsu, was vexed that Kazuya had once again stood in his way. A month later, the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 was announced and Lee immediately decided to enter.

Lee was determined to settle the score with Kazuya in the tournament and claim the Mishima Zaibatsu.

Endings

Tekken 2

Signs all over the city state that Lee Chaolan has won the tournament. Lee sits in the main office of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Both Heihachi and Kazuya are seen behind bars and Lee gives a thumbs down for both of them.

Tekken Tag Tournament

While smiling and standing up, Lee Chaolan reminisces about fighting and defeating Kazuya and Heihachi.

Tekken 4

After defeating Heihachi, Lee announces that his main intention is not to just win the tournament, but to introduce Combot to the public. After revealing Combot, Lee asks it to give a demonstration. As Combot tries to walk down the steps, it slips. Combot gets up, its eyes light up, and Combot starts charging at Lee, prompting Lee to prepare for another battle. The epilogue then states that Combot has been redesigned. Lee is shown sitting in his office sipping brandy. His secretary comes in and tells him of the new model for Combot. She tells him that during testing, Combot unleashed a 50-hit combination on Heihachi and that Heihachi was "completely helpless". Lee becomes pleased with the results, chuckles, and says "Excellent."

Tekken 5

Lee is relaxing at poolside after winning the tournament. He has taken control of the Mishima Zaibatsu, and he has demoted Heihachi to a mere waiter. After taking Lee's order ("Two fingers"), Heihachi walks off, grumbling at Lee under his breath. Lee then threatens to detonate the bomb built into Heihachi's bowtie (a reference to Battle Royale), which quickly cowls Heihachi back into servitude. Lee chuckles while the woman next to him puts sunglasses on him and lays down next to him. Lee simply says "Excellent."

Fighting Style and Moves List

Fighting Style

Lee's fighting style is simply stated as 'Martial Arts', but this title does not provide an in depth description of the style he actually practices. His fighting movements in-game are also hard to define, as of his many kicks and punches are not associated with any specific martial art, and many are animations that have carried over from Tekken 2. Many of his kicks and punches appear most similar to a stylised combination of wushu, taekwondo and possibly savate (several of his moves are essentially savate combos, like fouetté frontal triple and chassé bas).[citation needed] His sidestep moves, however, are definitely savate, including the swing bras arrière and revers latéral. However, he also shares many moves with Marshall Law, and because Jeet Kune Do's philosophy involves gathering what is usefull from various forms of martial arts and putting them into a personalized system, Lee's fighting style as a whole can be labeled as Jeet Kune Do. Almost all of his basic kicks are Taekwondo.

From Tekken 1 to Tekken 5

Lee's fighting style in the Tekken games is a compilation of moves used by Marshall Law, Paul Phoenix, and Heihachi and Kazuya Mishima, but mostly Marshall's. He also has a few moves of his own in the games. With each Tekken game released after the first Tekken game, Lee acquired many moves of his own while retaining many of the moves used by Marshall, Paul, and the Mishima's. In Tekken 5, however, Lee's moves that he shared with Paul and Marshall were highly differentiated (such as the Shaolin Spin Kicks move, where Lee will perform a somersault kick as his third attack, but Marshall will perform a third kick). Lee does retain some of Marshall and Paul's moves, such as one of Marshall's 10-hit combos, which is Lee's only 10-hit combo. Lee is a mid-tier solid character when played well with various poking tools and arguably the best wall carry game along with Steve Fox. He does however lack a low attack with a knockdown/combo effect (with the exception of the slow and telegraphed Shin Slicer) and difficult to break throws, leaving him vulnerable to turtling and a good sidesteps/sidewalk game.
