Image removal

The image at the top of this article, identified as Galuppi, was actually the Alessandro Longhi portrait of Giacomo Casanova. I've therefore removed the image and moved the one of the statue up into its place. Deor (talk) 22:51, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

==Question about translation of Galuppi's definition of "good music": Is the translation given (beauty, clearness and good modulation) Burney's own? The Italian given is vaghezza, which, in the dictionaries I have consulted can mean either vagueness / haziness, or longing / desire. But not beauty. If Galuppi meant vagueness then its juxtaposition with the following term (chiarezza = clarity, brightness, luminosity, sincerity) suggests a bit of a joke on Galuppi's part. It would be interesting to know how well Burney spoke Italian at the level needed for artistic and aesthetic discussions. Also, the final term, buona modulatione, in music at that time would be translated into English as "well designed melody" or "good melodic judgment" - there are examples of this use in the composition manuals of the 18th century. The inclusion of this anecdote in the Galuppi article seems to be wanting to support Galuppi's talent, and perhaps fits better with the earlier statements by Georg Vogler in giving an indication of contemporaneous technical and aesthetic notions of dramatic vocal art. If that makes sense, then it is probably better to use a more likely translation or have at least some commentary on the translation. To translate the motto-like statement as saying that good (effective) music always has a sense of yearning and must always be sincere and open-faced; and must always be well fitted to the text, the drama, and the interplay of characters, is a succinct description of Galuppi's compositional achievement in his operas. --Greene, RC (talk) 15:51, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
