Merger proposal

@ILIL, Jerome Kohl, and Alpha Ursae Minoris: I propose to merge the art music (this article) and vernacular music articles into a new article called art music and vernacular music because I think these articles are currently too small to be kept separate at the moment and because only 335 articles currently link to the former article, and only 134 to the latter. -- PK2 (talk) 07:06, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That would be highly unorthodox and WP:MERGEREASON recommends against it anyway. "Merging should be avoided if: ... 3. The topics are discrete subjects warranting their own articles, even though they might be short." ili (talk) 07:13, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Incoming links of 335 and 134 are actually very high (in fact the former will mostly be from the template). Per above, I see no merit in this at all; this article is not very short, while the other is, but could and should be expanded. The title is odd. One might as well redirect the lot to Music. The proper procedures with tagging etc have not been followed. Johnbod (talk) 12:19, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For future editors

I've just archived many old threads (see Talk:Art music/Archive 1) but wanted to make sure a common criticism remained on the talk page, alluded to in many of these threads.

That is, this article seems to cherrypick sources rather heavily, and construct a dogmatic narrative on the nature of "art music". The subject needs to be treated with more nuance and indeed less certainty!—this is not the early 20th-century, which "art music" was used without hesitation as a signifier of "good" over "bad" music. There is now substantial scholarship criticizing the term and the framework in which it was created. Aza24 (talk) 15:03, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
