"That's Entertainment", also known as "Pilot", or simply "Hazbin Hotel", is the pilot episode of the American animated musical television series Helluva Boss, co-written by Dave Capdevielle, Raymond Hernandez, and series creator Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano, and directed by Medrano. The short film premiered to YouTube on October 28, 2019, following a music video teaser, "Inside of Every Demon Is a Rainbow", released October 6, 2018. The pilot had mostly positive receptions, and has been viewed over 102 million times,[3] leading Medrano to form a full animation production company, SpindleHorse Toons,[4][5][6] and expand Hazbin Hotel into a full show with A24, as well as produce a spin-off series, Helluva Boss.

Set in the Hellaverse,[7] the pilot introduces protagonists, the employees and guests of the titular hotel, which Charlie, princess of Hell, seeks to have find a way for sinners to be "rehabilitated" and "check out" into Heaven from Hell, as an alternative to Heaven's annual "Extermination" of souls due to Hell's overpopulation, along with her girlfriend Vaggie and first guest Angel Dust, as Charlie is approached by Alastor the Radio Demon with helping her run the hotel, with him expanding the staff to include his personal bartender Husker and maid Niffty.[2]

Plot

Charlie, the princess of Hell, pursues her seemingly impossible goal of rehabilitating demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in Hell. She opens the "Happy Hotel" in hopes that patients will be "checking out" into Heaven. While most of Hell mocks her goal after she announces it during a televised interview ("Inside of Every Demon Is a Rainbow"), her devoted girlfriend, Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film star Angel Dust, stick by her side. When Alastor, a powerful entity known as "The Radio Demon" reaches out to Charlie to assist in her endeavors, her crazy dream is given a chance to become a reality ("Alastor's Reprise"), with him bringing on Husker and Niffty to serve as the hotel's bartender and maid, before preventing Sir Pentious from attacking, and renaming the hotel the "Hazbin Hotel".[2]

Production and release

Some characters of the pilot had been around for years when Medrano began working with people at SVA on what would later become Hazbin Hotel,[8] as the "Misfit Demon Gang" in Medrano's webcomic series ZooPhobia.[9][10] Originally, the pilot was meant to be an adult comedy "with a raunchy, demonic aesthetic". It took over six months to write the episode, and over two years to animate it, with teasers released in that ensuing period to garner an audience of fans.[8][11]

A music video of the song "Inside of Every Demon Is a Rainbow", featured in the pilot and over the closing credits, was released on May 8, 2020 as a teaser trailer for it,[12] and it gained 54 million views by early February 2021.[8] Additionally, a French dub of the pilot was released on May 8, 2020.[13] The podcast series HuniCast, co-hosted by Angel Dust voice actor Michael Kovach and pilot animator Ashley Nichols, featuring a series of skits continuing the pilot's events, was released from 2019 to 2023.[14]

Reception

Critical reception

The episode was critically acclaimed for its animation quality, music, and characters.[15][16] Matthew Field of Go! & Express, argued that the episode was part of the "animation renaissance" on YouTube, and said there may be "a lot more projects like Hazbin in the future."[17][18] Lidia Vassar of the MSU Reporter praised the show, noting its "raunchy sense of humor and quirky art style."[19] She also stated that she was looking forward to future episodes, enjoyed the "diversity of character designs," and stated that it is clear that the show's creators "put a lot of time and heart into this project." In December 2019, in an article about the current state of adult animation, CBR animation critic Reuben Baron stated that while the pilot episode had garnered "some warranted criticism" because as "clear labors of love from an animation standpoint."[20]

Reviewers argued the pilot would have a positive influence on independent animation going forward,[21][22] with Sean Cubillas for CBR praising the show for "quirky, ambitious, and dark humor" and some of the "fastest, wittiest, and raunchiest dialogue ever seen in independent animation."[23]

Expansion to full series

In August 2020, A24 picked up Hazbin Hotel for the production of a television series.[24][25] On December 21, 2021, the official Hazbin Hotel Twitter account teased the release of the first season.[26] It was later reported that the cast from the pilot was not asked to reprise their roles for the A24 production, though these voice actors showed support for the show despite their removal.[27][28][29] On September 28, 2023, a trailer was posted announcing the first season's premiere on Amazon Prime Video in January 2024, while also announcing that "Season 2 is coming".[30] The series premiered on January 19, 2024.

I realized this film is just to complex and too demanding for my current level of animation, and while it woulda been a very fun/interesting film, I have to shelf it for when my skills are able to tackle it. Also I'm very picky on the voices for these characters, so that became another issue I realized early on, not being able to find a suitable VA. Seein' these sketches still makes me twitch wanting to do it though gvbhjnm. so yeah. This film was too be titled "The Spider Brothers" and I'll prolly do it one day in future. ONE DAY".
