Company not notable, contributors and products notable ?

[edit]

With much help from User:Jayen466, have added secondary sources to go towards establishing notability, but need secondary sources that talk about Octagon Press directly. Most either show the notability of the authors or of their works. Esowteric (talk) 17:35, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, a google search on "octagon press" (in quotes) yields 16,200 results; yahoo! yields 55,800. Esowteric (talk) 14:49, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
At the time of writing, 16 pages link to Octagon Press (See what links here), which was previously redirected to Idries Shah, and 69 mention "Octagon Press" -- excluding talk pages.
For future reference:
User:Esowteric wrote on 27 May 2009: "User:RadioFan flagged the article Octagon Press Ltd for lack of notability. The difficulty I'm having, which you'll see immediately if you have a look at the article now it's been extended, is that hardly anybody has said anything significant about the publisher itself, but the company's founder, authors and products have received extensive coverage and are notable. Folk talk about authors and books but often only mention publishers in passing, especially if the company is not quoted on the stock exchange.
The problem is that the letter of the wikipedia law rules out such inheritence. Is the wikipedia policy too inflexible here? Ideas most welcome. Thanks"

User:RadioFan has removed the tag, writing on 27 May 2009: "Different editors have different opinions about how strictly this should be enforced. Some want to allow nearly everything and support deletion of only the most obvious vandalism and allow everything else. Others want strict adherence to notability guidelines. Most are somewhere in between. Personally I lean towards deleting that which cannot be sourced according to the guidelines and do agree that notability isn't inherited. However, I think that in this case, flexibility is called for. It's a publisher with a good number of titles in print. Thats enough for me in this case."

User:Jayen466 added on 27 May 2009: "(e/c) I have tried to help Esowteric to put the article on a more solid footing. The best references I have found are the founder's (Idries Shah) obituaries in The Daily Telegraph and The Independent [1][2], but they still only devote a paragraph each to his publishing company. I still think there probably should be more detailed sources available (publishing/book trade journals and the like), but at the moment I am a bit stumped for how to lay my hands on these. What also does not help is that Idries Shah died in 1996, just as the Internet took off. A lot was written about him and his publishing drive in the 60s and 70s, but that stuff is not easily accessible without popping into a library (and knowing what to look for). But basically, I agree the company is notable, and we'll keep looking. Cheers"

What he said.--RadioFan (talk) 21:11, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks again Esowteric (talk) 21:14, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Without wishing to "game the system", I've initiated a conversation at Wikipedia talk:Notability (orgs and co)#Octagon Press Ltd to check this out at a policy level. Sorry, not sure how to link to the conversation properly. Cheers, Esowteric (talk) 09:30, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Afghan Relief

[edit]

Will make enquiries to find out whether the Afghan Relief Organization was a development of Shah's Afghan Relief, or are distinct organizations. Esowteric (talk) 08:34, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
