Anaklusmos is a magical sword used by the antagonist of the fictional Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Percy Jackson. The sword takes the form of a ballpoint pen when it is sheathed, and when it is "uncapped" the pen extends into a sword. Anaklusmos is made out of Celestial Bronze, a material favored by demigods because it destroys monsters easily. If it is lost, for whatever reason, it will always return to the pocket of the user. Anaklusmos has been used to kill many monsters, including the Furies. The sword was given to Percy by Chiron in The Lightning Thief, the first book of the series. It is humornous to note that Percy was at first disappointed by the gift, as it took the form of the ballpoint pen at that time.

Name

The name "Anaklusmos" is Greek for "riptide", revealed immediately after Percy received the sword from Chiron. This is a fitting name for the sword as Percy Jackson is son of the sea god Poseidon. Although the sword's "official" name is Anaklusmos, it is referred to as "Riptide" during most of the Series.
