Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc., or more commonly, simply Leviton, mass produces electrical products: light sockets, receptacles(switches&[[Domestic AC power plugs and sockets|outlets], dimmers and other lighting control systems, wire, power cables, power cords, wall plates, datacom, and thousands of other electrical products. Leviton is know as the standard to electricians in most electrical devices, and 90% of all the homes in America have electrical wiring devices from Leviton. Leviton introduced the first GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), and the first touch dimmer. Leviton also introduced the Decora® designer-style devices (rectangular shaped wall plates, receptacles and switches (see timline))which is the most common receptacle in households today. Leviton has lighting management system solutions for commercial, theatrical and architectural lighting applications as well. They include relays designed to meet specific lighting control applications in commercial buildings, and a variety of wall and ceiling occupancy sensors that are either Passive Infrared (PIR), ultrasonic, or multi-technology (PIR and Ultrasonic).

The Leviton Manufacturing Company was founded in New York by Isidor Leviton, at the dawn of the electrical era in 1906. Originally engaged in the fabrication of mantle tips for gas lighting, the Company soon afterwards, in 1910, converted to production of a single electrical product -- a pull-chain lampholder (designed for Edison's new light bulbs).

1922: Leviton relocated to Greenpoint, Brooklyn after acquiring the TECCO plant, and now offered 568 products.

1929: Acquires Meteor Electric Company, a leading manufacturer of wiring devices.

1932: Leviton devices are used in the Empire State Building.

1937: Acquires American Insulated Wire and becomes the industry leader in wire, cable and cord products.

1939: Leviton devices featured at World's Fair.

1950: Purchases the Deal Electric Company.

1953: Acquires Hale Brothers Companies, now known as Leviton Canada.

1960: Leviton is among the first manufactures to institute an employee pension plan.

1961: Leviton devices are installed in the White House.

1965: Harold Leviton becomes President and CEO.

1972: Introduces the first GFCI, the first touch dimmer, and a selection of home automation powerline carrier components.

1975: Moves corporate headquarters to current location in Little Neck, NY.

1979: Leviton wiring devices are used in the refurbishing of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

1985: Leviton patents a thermal protector that helps prevent fires caused by recessed lighting fixtures.

1986: Forms the Telcom division (now Voice & Data).

1987: Leviton's Immersion Detector Curcuit Interrupter receives National Safety Council recognition for its contribution to consumer safety.

1993: Opens a manufacturing/ distribution center in El Paso, TX.

1997: Acquires Macro Lighting Controls, a leading manufacturer of architectural lighting control systems.

1999: Acquires NSI/Colortran, industry leader in theatrical and commercial lighting control systems.

2000: Forms Leviton Integrated Networks and opens a semi-automated distribution facility in Spanish Springs, NV.

2001: Opens first sales office and facility in China.

2003: Opens a large manufacturing facility in Dongguan, China.

2005: Donald Hendler becomes third Leviton president. And the Acenti® line is introducted.

Today, Leviton is the largest manufacturer of wiring devices in North America. Leviton's product offering comprises more than 25,000 distinct catalog numbers, and the Company stands as a leader in the electrical industry, serving the industrial, commercial, OEM and residential markets.

In 2005 Leviton introduced the Acenti® line of products. Leviton’s Acenti® Collection (see timeline above) has many unique features. In the dimmers, for example, there is one-touch DIM/BRIGHT bar that enables users to set the precise lighting levels they desire, the Acenti® Dimmer remembers the setting, returning to the same light level when turned back on. The Acenti® line includes the industry’s first triplex outlet, the first screwless metal wallplate, the first alignment plate mounting system, and the first blue LED Locator Light. The Acenti® Dimmer and Switch also features one position for off and on.

Leviton has recently joined forces with software giant Microsoft Corporation to offer homeowners a way to remotely control lighting and other Z-Wave® enabled home automation schemes using any number of popular consumer electronic products, like a cellphone.






Home Entertainment

Just as Leviton did in 1910, when they switched production from gas mantle tips to a pull-chain lampholder, Leviton has started to work on modern home entertainment products. Leviton's entertainment products include: Indoor and outdoor speakers, on-wall home theater systems, A/V entertainment center products, controls and distribution components. Leviton and JBL have partnered together to create the Leviton Architectural Edition™ (seen below) powered by JBL program, which consists of a line of installed multi-room music, outdoor and home theater entertainment system.

The Leviton Entertainment & Applications Platform (LE&AP or LEAP(seen below)) is an all-digital media storage and retrieval system that’s part of the home’s structured cabling network. With the Leviton Entertainment & Applications Platform, all of someones digital media (songs, videos, pictures) is accessible throughout the home—on any networked TV or entertainment system. The Leviton Entertainment & Applications Platform’s Media Center (the device that goes inside the Structured Media Center) is also an internet gateway that serves as a protective firewall while also letting the owner network his/her computers and share his/her internet broadband connection.

Core Wiring Division

The staple of Leviton's business, Leviton’s Wiring Device Division designs, develops, markets and sells the broadest range of wiring device products in the industry.
