Fortune 1000 is a reference to a list maintained by a business magazine called Fortune. The list is of the 1000 largest American companies. The idea is that these companies are the real movers and shakers in the national economy, and as such, watching what they do can be educational. They also make great targets for selling products into, as they have large budgets and large staff needs which must be addressed.
