Vanhlupuii (July 2, 1946 – Mar 30,2024[1]) was a renowned Mizo vocalist and the only Top Grade Artist of All India Radio (AIR)[2] from Mizoram.[3]

Early life and education

Born in Dawrpui, Aizawl, she displayed her musical talent from a young age, commencing her journey in the world of music at the tender age of five. Despite lacking formal training, Vanhlupuii's passion and dedication led her to become one of the most celebrated singers in Mizoram. She is also the first Mizo Women on record to complete B.Com from Mizoram. Along with B Lalzela she was among the founder of Central High School in Aizawl, Mizoram.

Career

Her illustrious career with AIR began in 1957, and she swiftly ascended the ranks, achieving Grade ‘A’ in 1969 and eventually securing the prestigious title of Top Grade Artist. Vanhlupuii's repertoire spanned a wide range of genres, including English and Mizo songs, and she exhibited her versatility by forming a band named "The Beginners" alongside her brothers and friends and the "Vans" along with her siblings[4]. Vanhlupuii's contributions to music extended beyond the confines of Mizoram, as she embarked on performances across various cities in India, including Calcutta, Digboi, Pune, Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, and Madras. Additionally, she showcased her talent on international platforms, notably at the Seventh Day Adventist Church conference in Utrecht, Holland.

Personal life

She was the daughter of the esteemed poet and composer Vankhama and Laldengi. She married Lalthuama and was blessed with three children Vanlalpari, Vanlalremruata and Vanzaipuii. Her demise, attributed to terminal kidney disease and stroke[5].

Awards

Vanhlupuii recorded an impressive catalog of over 200 songs, leaving an indelible mark on the music scene of Mizoram and the Northeast region of India. Her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft garnered widespread recognition, earning her accolade:
