Amy Maree Eden is an Australian politician who has served as mayor of Cairns in Queensland since 2024. She is the second woman to hold the role, after Val Schier.[2][3]
Political career
Prior to entering politics, Eden worked as a social worker.[4]
Eden was selected by the Cairns Unity Team to contest Division 5 on Cairns Regional Council at the 2020 election, challenging independent councillor Richie Bates (who had defected from Cairns Unity in 2017).[5][6]
She was elected with 50.82% of the vote after preferences, narrowly defeating Bates.[7]
In July 2023, Eden defected from Unity to form Team Eden, announcing her decision to contest the mayoralty. Incumbent mayor Bob Manning had already stated he would not seek a fourth term in office, with Unity's Terry James the only other declared candidate.[8][9]
During the campaign, she was accused of plagiarising a Facebook post from Toowoomba councillor Rebecca Vonhoff.[10] She later admitted to using passages of of Vonhoff's post, and apologised.[11]
Eden was elected with 56.64% of the vote after preference distribution, defeating incumbent Terry James.[12][13] The only other Team Eden candidate to be elected was Trevor Tim in Division 4.[14]
