The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2007 season has started with the team trying to win the AL West, which they missed out on last year for the first time since 2004. The Los Angeles Angels will try to take the American League West division championship back from their rival Oakland. During the offseason, they lost Adam Kennedy (to the St. Louis Cardinals) and Darin Erstad (to the Chicago White Sox), two of the few players on their team remaining from their 2002 World Series championship team, to free agency. In November they signed former Texas Rangers center fielder Gary Matthews, Jr. to a 5-year contract worth $50 million. The team received bad news upon learning that left fielder Juan Rivera broke a leg playing winter baseball in Venezuela, leading to the Angels signing free agent Shea Hillenbrand. But the Angels did solidify their bullpen for the 2007 season by signing set-up man Scot Shields and closer Francisco Rodríguez each to a one-year contract and acquiring Justin Speier and Darren Oliver from free agency. The Angels go into the 2007 season relying heavily on younger prospects Casey Kotchman, Kendry Morales, and Howie Kendrick to fill the vacancies left by departing players. Much like 2006, the team's depth will likely be tested if they are unable to stay healthy.
In April, the Cleveland Indians' home opener, as well as the remainder of a four-game series with the Seattle Mariners, was postponed due to heavy snow in Cleveland, Ohio. After a discussion about a possible relocation of the following series between the Angels and the Indians to Anaheim[1], the Indians decided to relocate the three-game series to Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, home of the Milwaukee Brewers.[2]. Tuesday's series opener was the first American League game played in Milwaukee since 1997 when the Brewers played at Milwaukee County Stadium to close the 1997 season before switching to the National League for the start of the 1998 season.
