Royal Never Give Up (RNG) is a Chinese esports organization whose League of Legends team competes in the League of Legends Pro League.[1] It was established in May 2015.[2] RNG won the 2016 LPL Spring Playoffs, 2018 LPL Spring Playoffs and 2018 LPL Summer Playoffs,[3][4][5] and is the champion of the 2018, 2021, and 2022 Mid-Season Invitational.[6] Its sister team is Royal Club. The organization also has a Dota 2 team, which participated in The International 2019.[7]

History

2016

By winning a champion and a second in the spring and summer, RNG qualified for the 2016 World Championship.[8]

2017

In the 2017 LPL Spring Season, RNG was placed in the Group A and won first place. In the 2017 LPL Spring Playoffs, RNG defeated EDG in semifinals with a score of 3:1.[9] However, they were beaten by WE in finals with a score of 0:3.[10] They lost the ticket to 2017 Mid-Season Invitational.

In June, RNG won the Demacia Cup Summer 2017 Playoffs in Changsha.[11] In July, RNG helped LPL get its first championship of Rift Rivals.[12] In the 2017 LPL Summer Playoffs, RNG defeated Team WE with a score of 3–2 in semifinals.[13] They were defeated again in the finals by EDG with a score of 2–3.[14]

Although RNG got two runner-ups in spring and summer season, they gained enough points and got the ticket to the 2017 World Championship. RNG was placed in Group C and won first place in the group stage.[15] During their quarterfinals, they defeated FNC with a score of 3–1,[16] and was defeated by SK Telecom T1 in the semifinals.[17]

2018

In the 2018 LPL Spring Playoffs, RNG defeated WE in two rounds.[18] They defeated Invictus Gaming in the semifinals and EDG in the finals.[19][4] In the 2018 Mid-Season Invitational, the team won first place in the group stage.[20] During the first-place tiebreaker, RNG defeated KZ from LCK with a score of 3–1.[21]

In June, RNG won the championship of Demacia Cup Summer 2018 Playoffs in Zhuhai.[22] In July, RNG helped LPL get the championship of 2018 Rift Rivals.[23] In the 2018 LPL Summer Playoffs, RNG defeated TOP with a score of 3–1.[24]

After summer season, RNG won enough points to become eligible to participate in the 2018 World Championship, and placed first in the group stage.[25] In the knockout stage, RNG lost the quarterfinals against G2.[26]

2019

In the 2019 LPL Spring Playoffs, RNG defeated EDG in two rounds. They triumphed over TES in the semifinals and secured a victory over JD Gaming in the finals with a score of 3-2.

During the 2019 MSI, RNG clinched the second spot in the group stage. In the tiebreaker for first place in the group stage, they defeated SKT T1 with a score of 3-1.

Ahead of the summer split, RNG claimed the championship title of the 2019 Demacia Cup in Chengdu. They also played a pivotal role in securing the Rift Rivals championship for the LPL once again.

In the 2019 LPL Summer Playoffs, RNG defeated IG with a score of 3-1 in the semifinals and secured a victory over FPX in the finals with a score of 3-2, thus clinching the championship.

2020

In the 2020 Spring Split, RNG finished seventh in the regular season and were eliminated in the first round of playoffs with a 1-3 loss to EDG. On April 30, 2020, RNG's ADC Jian "Uzi" Zihao's contract expired, making him a free agent. On June 1, RNG announced their roster for the Summer Split, with Uzi notably absent, sparking speculation about his retirement. On June 3, Uzi officially announced his retirement due to health reasons on Weibo. On June 17, RNG announced the acquisition of Chen "GALA" Wei from DMO as their new ADC. RNG finished the regular season with an 8-8 record, ranking ninth and failing to qualify for playoffs. With insufficient points, RNG missed out on the 2020 World Championship, marking only the second time since their formation in 2015 that they did not qualify for Worlds.

2021

Before the start of the 2021 LPL Spring Split, RNG announced the acquisition of former ES jungler Yan "Wei" Yang-wei (ID: Wei) for their League of Legends division. RNG excelled in the Spring Split, finishing the regular season in first place with a record of 14 wins and 2 losses, securing a spot in the playoffs.

In the playoffs, RNG faced FPX in the first round but lost 0-3. However, utilizing the double-elimination format, they defeated TES 3-2 in a thrilling match. They then proceeded to defeat their long-time rivals EDG 3-2, advancing to the Spring Split finals against FPX, who had previously defeated them.

Despite doubts from many, RNG prepared well for the finals and staged an impressive comeback against FPX, eventually winning the championship. This victory marked RNG as the only three-time champion of the LPL Spring Split and qualified them to represent the LPL at the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) in Iceland.

Three years later, RNG returned to MSI, topping their group undefeated but facing challenges in the knockout stage. After defeating PSG, they faced defending champions DK in the finals and emerged victorious, becoming the second team after SKT to win MSI twice.

In the Summer Split, RNG initially struggled but bounced back with a nine-game winning streak to secure a playoff spot. However, they ultimately lost to LNG in the playoffs, ending their Summer Split campaign.

Despite this, RNG had enough points from the Spring Split to qualify for the 2021 World Championship play-in stage. They defeated WE 3-0, advancing to the main event. Placed in Group C, RNG finished first and advanced to the knockout stage but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by fellow LPL team EDG, concluding their journey at Worlds.
