Claims about "skunk" attack

The claim that protestors were sprayed with skunk, "a foul-smelling spray usually used as crowd control by the Israel Defense Forces," currently sourced with an article from the Middle East Eye, needs some clarification. This statement is presented as established fact, but the Columbia Daily Spectator and the Jerusalem Post have both reported on a lawsuit from the student involved in which he asserts that he sprayed a fart-spray he purchased from Amazon. BrokeBoneGrinder (talk) 04:17, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This claim doesn't require clarification, it requires deletion. "Skunk" is an Israeli developed, non-lethal law enforcement product that is unavailable to the Israeli public, let alone to anyone in the US. "Middle East Eye" is a well-known source of biased, anti-Israel information, and this false, sensational "chemical attack" claim has sadly made it around the world - Wikipedia should definitely not be repeating it. 2A0D:6FC7:204:6A8B:2D89:3499:E21E:D85 (talk) 14:49, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cherrypicked Response section?

Is everyone condemning the occupation? Noone in support? The Response section looks like it was made to deliberately include only the response that condemn the occupation. 2A02:85F:E058:1000:8CB0:8FDA:A957:83E9 (talk) 13:55, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The vast majority of government authorities in the United States are solidly pro-Israel. Evaporation123 (talk) 23:16, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.
Disagree. Current name is more descriptive than proposed and proposed violates our commitment to a neutral point of view. But, the current is too long. Maybe once the year is over it could be moved to 2024 Columbia University protests or something else that's descriptive with the benefit of hindsight. Uhoj (talk) 21:47, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There still should be a better, shorter name like "Columbia University pro-Palestinian occupation" or "2024 Columbia University Protests". MountainDew20 (talk) 23:32, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ignore this, I saw you said the same. MountainDew20 (talk) 23:33, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with "2024 Columbia University protests" is that there have been multiple 2024 protests at Columbia before 17 April, for example over the skunk attack incident in January. This ongoing protest is different because of the nature of how it is being conducted (a campus occupation). Evaporation123 (talk) 23:40, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree: Not everyone protesting on the Columbia campus is part of the encampment, such as the faculty that recently walked out in support of the students. Perfecnot (talk) 21:59, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, Gaza Solidarity Encampment redirects to this page anyways, and the scope of the article is beyond just the area of tents being that there is activity all over campus and around its perimeter as well. Evaporation123 (talk) 23:18, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose we should use the name commonly used in the sources. User:Sawerchessread (talk) 01:08, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose due to NPOV name without adequate justification, and different name used by RS. FortunateSons (talk) 07:59, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Background could be read to mean that it's outside agitators making their way to Columbia rather than students of the university. Here's one way to clarify the situation:

Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel students have gathered at Columbia University during the Israel–Hamas war.

Violence against Jewish students

The article fails to mention the violence and rampant antisemitism against Jewish students at the university. One Jewish student was stabbed in the eye with a flag pole, whereas other students chanted "Fuck you Yehudis," and "Go back to Poland."

This article is extremely one-sided, and biased and fails to mention WHY the university is taking action against the protests in the place. There's a reason the rabbi at the university told the Jewish students to go home. It is literally unsafe for them.

The article needs to address this, now. 72.78.76.172 (talk) 00:51, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Extremely biased title

The title should be changed from "pro-Palestinian" to "anti-Israel." The anti-Semitic protests are solely about demonizing Israel and Jews and promoting grossly anti-Semitic blood libels, such as false claims of genocide against Israel. There is nothing about promoting "Palestinians." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dail'Liss tree (talkcontribs) 03:07, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Antisemitism

Why do you not add all the antisemitism that happened in the protest? "Remember the 7th of October "That will happen not one more time, not five more times, not 10 more times, not 100 more times, not 1000 more times, but 10,000 times!" "we are Hamas" this seems like something you would want to add to a post. Don’t make history one sided. Goldskys (talk) 10:37, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As stated above in the Claims about "skunk" attack discussion topic, the claim that student protestors were attacked with an Israeli Defense Forces chemical agent ("skunk") is disputed. I propose the following clarification:

In January 2024, students at a pro-Palestinian demonstration on campus were attacked with Skunk, a foul-smelling spray usually used as crowd control by the Israel Defense Forces, causing various injuries. In response, demonstrators organized a protest outside the university. The incident is currently being investigated by the New York City Police Department as a potential hate crime. SJP and JVP published a report in which they stated the perpetrators were former IDF soldiers and current Columbia students.

In January 2024, students at a pro-Palestinian demonstration on campus were sprayed with a foul-smelling substance which they claimed to be Skunk, a chemical used for crowd control by Israeli police forces. At least three students sought medical treatment after the incident. The New York Police Department announced that that they would investigate the incident as a potential hate crime. In March, Columbia expelled the student allegedly involved in spraying the substance. In April, the student in question, a former Israeli Defense Forces soldier, filed a lawsuit against the university under the pseudonym John Doe, claiming that he had released non-toxic fart spray purchased from Amazon. At a congressional hearing on antisemitism that same month, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce presented campus posters, featuring a blue and white skunk with a Star of David on its back, as evidence of anti-Semitic harassment on campus.
