ⰔⰎⰖⰆⰅⰁⰐⰋⰍⰬ
The list published in the article about a third of the length of the updated version we have offline. It is long enough that I will have to split it into separate lists chronologically, but not so long as to break this encyclopedia's anti-database policy (see Lists of Glagolitic manuscripts for a longer example, whose updated version we have likewise not yet published). Since you asked if the title belonged in the list, I will present you with the problem and with our solution.
Including volumes of book series and periodicals individually, the total number of titles printed with any Glagolitic before 1991 is over 1000. The number of such titles published since the proliferation of digital fonts is even greater. So while pre-internet printed works are notable enough for inclusion in the list by merely featuring Glagolitic text given the extreme rarity of the script in print, this rarity does not carry over into present times. Our solution has been to feature all works published before or slightly after the war, but only those with a Glagolitic title or substantial Glagolitic text post-internet.
In our updated version, we colour-code entries based on Glagolitic word count as sorting aid, replacing the "pure vs mixed" scheme of the present version. There are several reasons for this. First and foremost, because almost all Glagolitic books have some Latinic or Cyrillic text, to the extent that a ratio-based measurement becomes deceptive, e.g. since the ⰁⰖⰍⰂⰀⰓⰬ ⰔⰎⰀⰂⰅⰐⰔⰍⰋⰌ ⰒⰋⰔⰮⰅⰐⰬⰋ ⰂⰅⰎⰋⰝⰀⰌⰞⰀⰃⰑ ⰖⰝⰋⰕⰅⰎⰡ Ⰱ. ⰋⰅⰓⰑⰐⰋⰮⰀ ⰔⰕⰓⰋⰄⰑⰐⰔⰍⰀⰃⰑ was half Cyrillic it would only be 50% Glagolitic. Early books printed at Urach and Rome often have very long German or Latin prefaces. Some otherwise almost completely Glagolitic works lack Glagolitic titles. Publications with very low glagolitic:other ratios like Arkiv za pověstnicu jugoslavensku IX or Hrvatska glagolska književnost sometimes have far more Glagolitic than works entirely in Glagolitic like Мессы на пять венецианских праздиков (18th century) or the Veliki probni list (1560).
The significance of a book, inasmuch as it derives from featuring Glagolitic text, does not always correlate with the extent of the text it features. The Tabvla qvarvndvm syllabarvm, per qvas triginta atqve dvae praecipvae, commvnes, ac hoc tempore in vsvm receptae, notaeqve, ac sexaginta octo peregrinae features scarcely more than 400 characters of Glagolitic, but is one of only two titles employing one of the earliest of fewer than ten metal typefaces ever poured for the script, the other being םֶלִצָ κὰι Ἑρμηνέια: Das ist ein onomasticvm und interpretatio oder außführliche Erklerung; Melitsah kai hermeneia das ist ein Onomasticum. The 1538 publication Linguarum duodecim characteribus differentium alphabetum was the first book featuring a Glagolitic abecedary to be printed for a non-glagolitic audience, and it has under 100 characters of the script.
Thanks to its rarity, we have chosen to treat merely featuring Glagolitic text as significant enough to merit inclusion on the list, provided the work was published before the digital era or as part of the early adoption of digital fonts (or the first publication in a particular font). The 1922 ⰔⰎⰖⰆⰅⰁⰐⰋⰍⰬ is a rare book very relevant in the clerical transition from Glagolitic to Latinic. Title-only publications are not common on this list, but since there are very few Glagolitic titles even for otherwise completely Glagolitic volumes published in this era, exceptions like that and ⰋⰔⰕⰓⰀ (1984—1993) are notable.
Feel free to come to me with any questions regarding Glagolitic, whether in print, inscription, or manuscript!
Sincerely, Ivan (talk) 14:52, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
