It's taking me longer than expected to get through source checking but here is everything else! (It's just no. 2 I haven't finished) I should be able to finish Monday Adri-at-BYU (talk) 00:25, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the admirably thorough and constructive review so far. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:26, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just finished notes! Your work so far looks great!Adri-at-BYU (talk) 23:31, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. I believe I've actioned all your comments now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:43, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Two last things! The Mr Potato Head source is lacking some of the information but the second paragraph of the Mr. Potato Head lead looks like it has sources that would work. The Halliday source still only goes to a main page so it might need to be removed or replaced. I wasn't able to find a link that would work.
Mr PH: added the refs from Mr PH page.
Halliday: the source in the article is http://www.gov.pe.ca/photos/original/af_fact_ensipot.pdf which works correctly, maybe you haven't refreshed your browser.
I checked in a few browsers and it was still opening to the general website on my end, so I added an additional source just in case. I didn't want to keep making you go back and forth. All done, thanks for all your work! Adri-at-BYU (talk) 18:49, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Review

1. Well-written

a. checkY(addressed) Clear and concise prose
  • Under Domestication, "The potato was first domesticated in the region of modern-day southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia" is a little wordy, consider simply "in the regions of southern..."
    • Done.
  • Under Spread section, the second paragraph needs some clarification. It sounds like it's saying potatoes mostly come from Chile but also they mostly come from Peru. (Starting at "More than 99%...")
    • Fixed using the more recent evidence.
  • Breeding section, "The gene responsible for its trait as well as mutations to disable it are now known." specify the trait referred to, the meaning of the sentence is a little unclear.
    • Fixed.
  • Varieties section, consider moving the paragraph "The European Cultivated Potato Database is an online..." up to the first paragraph, it seems like it would fit in more there.
    • Done.
  • In the third paragraph of Genetic engineering, it is unclear where the "Rpi" came from in front of the two genes. Also, the last sentence of the paragraph is repetitive because the first sentence already mentions the two genes resist late blight. Consider combining or removing
    • Cited source names these genes. Removed the last sentence.
  • Impact of climate change on production add "While the potato is less important..."
    • Done.
  • Impact of climate change section third paragraph last sentence, consider "but" instead of "and" ("but rising temperatures will likely...")
    • Done.
  • Very last sentence of Impact of climate change section and the first paragraph of Adaption strategies have repeated information about latitude and altitude
    • Merged.
  • Adaption strategies section, reword sentence for clarity "Further, selecting for deeper root systems may reduce the need for irrigation." Selecting what?
    • Selecting for deeper root systems, as stated.
  • In Toxicity, I could be misunderstanding but the first and last sentences in the first paragraph seem to contradict each other. The first says raw potatoes themselves have solanine and the last sentence says These compounds are concentrated in the aerial parts of the plant in contrast to the tubers. Are they just more concentrated than in the potato? clarify
    • Done, and clarify captions too.
  • Under Adaption strategies, the first sentence needs editing for clarity and it has punctuation issues.
    • Edited whole paragraph.
  • I think this is a British English thing but can you say "grow up to some __ metres high" when its only 1 metre? (paragraph one of Description)
    • Fixed.
b. checkY(addressed) MoS compliance
  • In Phylogeny section, the list of diploid species is linked back generally to the potato page, remove the ones that just go there per MOS on self-redirects
    • Done.
  • Impact of climate change section - "This can get worse in the future: for instance, the amount of arable land suitable for rainfed potato production in the UK may decrease by at least 75%." Sounds a little outside of wiki voice, consider removing part for something like "In the future, the amount of arable land suitable for rainfed potato production in the UK could decrease by at least 75%"
    • Done.
  • In Toxicity, the text is sandwiched between the image box and the box on the right, adjust layout per MOS for images (layout section)
    • Done.

2. Verifiable with no original research

a. checkY(addressed) List of references
  • Source 94 "Climate change - can potato stand the heat" link now goes to a general page, can it be found somewhere else?
    • Removed, along with repetitive text.
b. checkY Sources cited inline
c. checkY No original research
d. checkY(addressed) No copyright violations or plagiarism
  • Check and update sourcing in the first two paragraphs of of Etymology, the information seems to be present but mixed between sources from earlier or later in the paragraph.
    • Rewritten from fresh source.
  • The second paragraph, Source 6 (Online Etymology Dictionary) does not mention several things from the paragraph, maybe those things are in sources from paragraph one?
    • Edited from source.
  • Description second paragraph, Only the last sentence comes from 12 (Regulation of potato tuberization), I wonder if 11 is where the rest comes from and needs to be later in the paragraph but I don't have access to read it.
    • Yes.
  • For the In mythology section, the source only mentions pieces of the sentence about Iroquois mythology.
    • Replaced ref: Constance 1908.
  • Please check the following sources:
    • Link no longer goes directly to the source: 63 (Growing Potatoes in the Home Garden. Maybe found it https://washington.cce.cornell.edu/horticulture-gardening/vegetable-gardening although it doesn't mention earthing up or mulching so it might need an update),
      • Added archive for the original source.
    • 121 (Halliday 2015),
      • Edited.
    • 131 (Museum of Childhood Mr Potato Head goes to the general page)
      • Updated URL.
    • (Needs alternate or additional source: 64 (Brulard 2015, doesn't mention ground preparation),
      • Rewritten, with sources for farm and garden.

111 (b: Cookbook: Potato in Wikibooks is user generated)

      • Removed.

3. Broad in its coverage

a. checkY(addressed) Addresses main aspects of the topic
  • For the In mythology section, expand if possible so it's not a one sentence paragraph only representing one culture.
    • Done.
  • In the Breeding section, potentially the third paragraph on sucrose could be removed, otherwise it needs to explain why that's important to know about potatoes
    • Removed.
b. checkY(addressed) Focused on topic without unnecessary detail.
  • In the Phylogeny section, consider adding "which is a member of the Solanaceae or the nightshade family" and removing the rest of that paragraph and the tree. This is information that could be found in the link for Solanaceae and isn't entirely necessary on the page.
    • Added the gloss. However, the phylogeny is relevant to this article (whatever any other article may or may not contain), and the tree shows readers directly how the potato is placed with respect to other plants that they are likely to have heard of.
  • In Production, consider removing the parenthetical statements with extra information about other types of crops. Instead, you could include the statistic for potatoes and then "is higher than that of maize, rice, wheat, and soybeans."
    • I don't see any text on other crops. The FAO graph is a trusted source, shows the growth of potato production since 2000, and has other crops on the same graph (taking up no additional space) for comparison over the same period. BTW your statement about being higher than those others is not correct.
  • Under Toxicity, the information about the other plants in the nightshade family isn't needed, consider removing the part with nightshade, henbane, etc.
    • Probably best left in; readers will not think of potato as a toxic plant, whereas they will very likely recognise deadly nightshade and tobacco as toxic, so there is a straightforward "teaching point" here.
  • Toxicity - The statistics in the second half of the second paragraph are very condensed in one place and potentially difficult for readers to get through, consider removing extra details beyond the desired level for potatoes.
    • Done.

4. Neutral

checkY Maintains neutral POV

5. Stable

checkY Not under any edit wars or disputes

6. Illustrated by media

a. checkY all images have proper copyright statues attached

b. checkY images are all relevant and short captions give good context

Updating consideration for International Potato Day

May 30th 2024 today is the first observation of International Potato Day, as recognised by the United Nation (source). Are there any updates to the page regarding this observation yet? 42.115.191.43 (talk) 21:17, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, done, and created a redirect to it, too. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:04, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
