Erik Janža (born 21 June 1993) is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Górnik Zabrze, which he captains, and the Slovenia national team.
Club career
Janža started his senior career at Mura 05 in 2010. He was part of the team which qualified for the European competitions for the first time, where they competed in the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, reaching the qualifying play-off round against Lazio.[4] In January 2013, he joined Domžale,[5] followed by Maribor in January 2015,[6] where he won both PrvaLiga and Football Cup.[2]
In January 2017, he moved abroad to join Czech side Viktoria Plzeň,[7] where he was loaned out to Cypriot club Pafos.[8] In July 2018, he transferred to Croatian side Osijek.[9]
On 28 June 2019, he signed a two-year contract with Polish Ekstraklasa club Górnik Zabrze.[10] On 21 November 2021, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3–2 win over Legia Warszawa.[11] He became the club's captain ahead of the 2022–23 season. On 15 June 2024, he extended his contract with the club until 2026.[12]
International career
Janža represented Slovenia at all youth international levels from under-16 to under-21.
He made his debut for the senior national team on 18 November 2014, in a 1–0 friendly defeat against Colombia.[13] On 14 October 2023, he scored his first international goal in a 3–0 victory over Finland during the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying.[14]
On 7 June 2024, he was selected in the 26-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2024.[15] On 16 June, he scored the equalizer in a 1–1 draw against Denmark in the opening match, to be his country's first goal in the tournament since their last participation in 24 years.[16]
