On 20 November 2023, a Boeing P-8A Poseidon operated by the United States Navy overran the runway and ditched into the Kāneʻohe Bay. All nine crew members evacuated the aircraft and swam to shore, uninjured. The aircraft damage is substantial and its airworthiness is still being evaluated to determine if it can be restored to operational condition.[1][2][3][4]
Aircraft
The aircraft involved, a Boeing P-8A Poseidon, MSN 66094, registered as 169561, was manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in 2020. It was equipped with two CFM International CFM56-7B27E engines.[2][5]
Accident
The military aircraft touched down on runway 22 with a tailwind of 21 knots. The weather conditions were rainy and cloudy weather conditions with the visibility down to one mile.[6][7][4] It then overshot the runway and ditched into the Kāneʻohe Bay at approximately 13:57 Hawaii–Aleutian Time. After going past the runway, the aircraft traveled a short distance in the water and turned to the left before coming to a halt.[8] The accident is currently under investigation.[9]
Aftermath
Before recovery
Before recovery, oil containment booms, which control the spread of oil, had been set up around the Poseidon.[8] The team also removed nearly all the fuel in the fuel tanks.[10][11]
After recovery
On 2 December, a team of the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and some contractors successfully recovered the Poseidon using inflatable salvage roller bags. The Poseidon is currently being inspected to determine whether it can be restored to operational condition or if it should be deemed a write-off.[10][2]
