Shang Wenjie (Chinese: 尚雯婕; Pinyin: Shàng Wénjié, born on December 22, 1982 in Shanghai, China), also known as Laure Shang, is a Chinese singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur. She won the third season of the Chinese singing competition Super Girl as well as countless awards.
Early life
Laure Shang was born on December 22, 1982 in Shanghai, China. Her father's name is Shang Qiaolong, he was a crane and transport worker, her mother is Chai Ruizhen and was a factory worker.[1][2]
Laure Shang grew up an only child. She lived with her parents on Tiantong'an Street in Zhabei district of Shanghai. Her residence was once part of the mansion of Yan Song, the prime minister of the Ming dynasty.[1]
In 1988, when Laure Shang was six years old, her father was dismissed. To support the family, her father rented a stall at the nearby farmers market to sell seafood.[1][2]
In Shang’s memory, her father would often get up at four o’clock in the morning to ride his bike to the market to sell his wares. Because her father's hands worked in the water all year round, they were strewn with cracks on the back of his hands and palms.[1]
Shang Qiaolong's dismissal and long work at the market led to frequent disputes between Laure Shang's parents. When she was eight years old, her parents divorced. Her mother began a new life, while Shang continued to live with her father.[1][2]
In 1992, Shang Qiaolong was diagnosed with severe heart disease. He had to sell his market stall, and Shang and her father relied on subsistence allowances to make ends meet.[1][2]
Shang had always liked singing. However, her father did not think it was an appropriate profession and asked her to study hard and go to college. In 1998, after graduating from Junior High School, Shang was admitted to Jincai Middle School with outstanding grades.[3] To relieve her father, she used her summer and winter vacations to sell French wine in hotels.[1]
Laure Shang graduated from school in 2001 and was admitted to Fudan University with a major in French.[4] From day one, Laure Shang set herself the goal to graduate and work in a foreign-funded company, earn a high salary and improve the living situation of herself and her father.[1]
Still, singing was a dream of hers. As a member of her school's literature and arts committee, she organized and participated in various singing competitions, performances and screenplay adaptations, learned to play various instruments and also to sing.[3] In 2002, Laure Shang represented her university at the National College Student French Song Contest in Wuhan and won second place. The French Embassy in China rewarded her with a round-trip ticket for a vacation in France.[4]
While in high school, she not only won a national scholarship, but also founded the Wenjie French-Chinese Language Training Service Center and applied for the College Student Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Fund. During her studies, she completed an internship at Western France and participated in the French film specials of the Shanghai International Film Festival many times. In April 2005, she acted as the main translator for the Film Festival.[1][5]
