FitzRoy was briefly Governor of New Zealand but was replaced by Geore grey when he could not bring a quick end to the First Maori War He was the Captain of the Beagle on its circumnavigation of the world. The ships naturalist was Charles Darwin and it was largely from his observations on this voyage that Darwin formulated his Theory of Evolution FitzRoy had strong Christian beliefs and remained a bitter opponent of Evolutionary Theory.

He died by suicide.
