The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938 film)

[edit]

I have just added this item in the list of relevant films. I see now that User:Clarityfiend removed this item already a "umpteenth" times and will do probably do it again. I suppose that he does it to be consistent with some policy (mentions the fact that "The Adventures of Robin Hood" has its own disambiguation page). Is it possible to explain it (in plain english) on this Talk page? The argument would have to be quite convincing because this 1938 film is a very important item that all normal readers would expect to see in the Film section, rather than at the very end in the "See also" section. Concur. Say "Robin Hood" to any American and the 1938 Errol Flynn movie is almost invariably what he'll think of. If you ask about Errol Flynn films, someone will suggest, "Robin Hood"--few remember the full title, so the effect is people looking for the film clicking fruitlessly on useless links. Not putting it in here is like insisting that an link for "Wikipedia" only belongs on a page labeled, "Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia"; this is not the case: Wikipedia. This entry can afford one line of redundancy. Also, the Film section is inconsistent with the Gaming and Television sections, which each have Adventures of links, further muddying the waters.
And, several properties are, "The [Adjective] Adventures of Robin Hood", which makes placing them anywhere but "Robin Hood" problematic.
Additionally, if you look at The Adventures of Robin Hood, you will see it is styled as, The Adventures of Robin Hood.
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."--Emerson
Please discuss whether to add the remaining entries in The Adventures of Robin Hood (disambiguation) or to delete other Adventures of Robin Hood, except Errol Flynn's and Richard Greene's as not being notable enough for exceptional treatment.

See WP:Partial title match. The purpose of a dab page is not to include everything under the sun related to the subject. Somebody also added The New Adventures of Robin Hood and Rocket Robin Hood, so you can see where this could end up. Also, a reader will almost always first land at Robin Hood, not here, and discover a link to List of films and television series featuring Robin Hood. The average American may or may not think of the film if you say "Robin Hood", but that's because of the main character, not necessarily the film's title. The game and TV series should also be removed, so that's a moot point. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:54, 16 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
However the purpose of a dab page is, "Ensuring that a reader who searches for a topic using a particular term can get to the information on that topic quickly and easily, whichever of the possible topics it might be." (Emphasis added.) RH is kind of a mess. The dab page seems to have all RH xxx but not all xxx RH; since xxx is pretty random, that seems inconsistent. Another issue is that the users have almost certainly been to the RH page before the dab page. How many links are reasonable? As I pointed out before, some Adventures of RH properties reside solely in the tiny Adventures of RH dab page; which dab page do The [adjective] Adventures of RH belong on if not the RH dab page? RH is clearly what we're trying to disambiguate, not "Adventures", not "Zany".
Presumably, if the user knew he was looking for, frex, The Zany Adventures of Robin Hood he would have ended up there directly and never hit the dab pages; so, we need to deal with the people who want something to do with Robin Hood, but they're unsure of the title. They need to "get to the information on that topic quickly and easily"; that's all I'm trying to get to.
Yes, the dab page is longer than ideal already, but I think we just have to live with that unless we can break it into multiple dab pages clear enough to put links to all of them in RH, itself. I tend toward just living with a big RH dap page, but if you have a conviction that List of films and television series featuring Robin Hood (at the top, not at the end of a very long article) and [other things named for or related to RH], I'm good with that. Laguna CA (talk) 10:39, 16 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't get you. Where does it say that The Zany Adventures of Robin Hood has to be on a dab page? Also, it's not RH xxx, it's RH: xxx, which is often just abbreviated RH. Also, the link to the list of films and TV series should not be in the middle of the dab page. I've dealt with hundreds of dab pages, and it's simply not kosher. It belongs and is in the main Robin Hood article. Clarityfiend (talk) 11:27, 16 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Per the disambiguation guidelines, partial title matches shouldn't be included unless they're alternately known by the same name. Unless The Adventures of Robin Hood is alternately known as simply "Robin Hood", it doesn't need to be here. There could, however, be a link to List of films and television series featuring Robin Hood. Readers will also have be able to find the Errol Flynn film (and others) at Robin Hood, which is where they'll end up first anyway.--Cúchullain t/c 14:21, 16 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Per the disambiguation guidelines, the primary topic is clearly Robin Hood. Whether we're talking about (all hypothetical, to avoid the slippery slope of notability) The Loves of Robin Hood, Robin "The Bird" Hood, or Robin Hood Junior, the primary is Robin Hood. If we can agree on that, then it seems clear to me that anything to disambiguate should be prominent in Robin Hood, since the whole point of disambiguation is to "quickly and easily" get the user to what he wants. If you want to just move the reference to movies and television to the top of Robin Hood so it's more visible, I can live with that. Robin Hood in Media might be a better solution. Anything in one dap page probably shouldn't be in the other since it confuses the scope of the dap page. That's my primary problem with the current dab page: it appears comprehensive, including many film and television shows, but it is not comprehensive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laguna CA (talkcontribs) 23:26, 16 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously Robin Hood is the primary topic. This dab page is for it and other items that are actually called "Robin Hood" and/or might realistically be searched for with the term "Robin Hood". If there's some evidence that The Adventures of Robin Hood is frequently called just "Robin Hood", it should be included, but we haven't seen it here. Note that there's a separate dab page for The Adventures of Robin Hood (disambiguation).--Cúchullain t/c 13:47, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
