The APEC Peru 2024 will be the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (in English, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, APEC) of its leaders that will be held from 10 to 16 November 2024.
In 2021, Óscar Maúrtua, the minister of foreign affairs of Peru, announced the organization of the 2024 APEC summit.[1] On February 10, 2022, the prime minister of Thailand, Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his capacity as current president of APEC, announced the United States as host of the 2023 meeting and Peru for 2024.[2][3]
Participants
This will be the first APEC meeting for Singaporean prime minister Lawrence Wong, who assumed the premiership on 15 May; Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who assumed premiership on 16 August; Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto, who is assuming the presidency on 20 October; Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, who is assuming the presidency on 1 October; and Vietnamese president Tô Lâm, who assumed the presidency on 22 May 2024, following the resignation of his predecessor Võ Văn Thưởng. This would also be Taiwan's president Lai Ching-te's first APEC summit, assuming the presidency on 20 May. However, he is expected to appoint Morris Chang as Taiwan's representative to the summit; Chang previously represented Taiwan from the 2018 to 2023 summits. On the other hand, this is expected to be United States president Joe Biden's final APEC summit after withdrawing from the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Notes
- ^ The president of China is legally a ceremonial office, but the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (de facto leader in one-party communist state) has always held this office since 1993 except for the months of transition, and the current general secretary is Xi Jinping, who is also the Chinese president.
- ^ Hong Kong joined APEC in 1991 during British administration with the name "Hong Kong." In 1997, Hong Kong became a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China and took the name "Hong Kong, China."
- ^ As a result of Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for war crimes against the Russian president Vladimir Putin, where Peru is also a member of the court, and hence it is highly likely that the Peruvian Ministry of Justice will implement the warrant to arrest Putin. The representative is currently undetermined.
- ^ Due to the complexities of the relations between it and the People's Republic of China, the Republic of China (ROC or "Taiwan") was not represented under its official name "Republic of China" or as "Taiwan". Instead, it participates in APEC under the name "Chinese Taipei". The president of the Republic of China does not attend the annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in person. Instead, it was generally represented by a ministerial-level official responsible for economic affairs or someone designated by the president. See List of Chinese Taipei representatives to APEC.[citation needed]
