W.marsh's RfA

Thank you for your support on my RfA. The final outcome was (30/2/0). I shall keep on rolling indeed. Thanks again! --W.marsh 03:03, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

regional blocs in Africa

Please, see African Economic Community (redirect to Economy section of African Union). I have added description of the stages for AEC creation and a table of curret situation. There are some question marks:

  • progress in ECCAS FTA/CU
  • progress in SADC FTA/CU
  • non yet participating members of ECOWAS FTA/CU (they can be viewed in a Powerpoint file - link at the bottom of ECOWAS page, but link is not working for me currently - the whole [www.ecowas.int] (there is the file) is not working for me; maybe ISP problems.

So, can you help to fill in the blanks? Alinor 20:25, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Progress for SADC can be seen here. I can't find the powerpoint file for ECOWAS - can you link to it for me, or explain more clearly where it is? The website doesn't work for me in Firefox, but it does work in Safari. Haven't been able to find anything for ECCAS - although the question clearly only is when STaP and DRotC will enter UDEAC as well instead of only ECCAS, since UDEAC is already a FTA *and* a CU. Nightstallion 20:38, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
And are you sure we don't want to have a separate article for AEC? Nightstallion 20:44, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Happy Christmas

(Feel free to delete this from your page after you've read it) Just want to wish everyone on Wikipedia who've I've "spoken" to this year a Happy Christmas, and well, I think with all the conversing done with you it had to be said. Happy New Year too (and if you don't celebrate Christmas then I guess it's just "Happy New Year") - RHeodt 22:30, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Same to you! Take care!

It's pleasant to find a congenial spirit on the Wikipedia. Best wishes in the New Year! logologist|Talk 04:35, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

I couldn't agree more with that. We should probably compile a list of people sharing our viewpoint for future reference. ;) Best wishes and take care! Nightstallion 09:09, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

A new time zone map

I'm not sure if this interests you, but I'm made a new time zone map. You can add it to the German article if you like.

Hi Nightstallion,

I would like to thank you for your kind support on my RfA. I'll do my best to be a good administrator. If you need anything or if I ever do something I shouldn't have, please, don't hesitate to drop me a line. Izehar 16:42, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I've done a complete rewrite with references and am requesting people who voted to have a look at the new version. Thanks. Dlyons493 Talk 16:24, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

I wonder...

...do you think you can make good use of the admin tools if the community gave them to you? :-) --HappyCamper 18:51, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm fairly sure I could, for one, clean up WP:RM far better... That alone doesn't really sound like it's enough reason to warrant an RfA. Any other suggestions in addition to that? (And thanks for asking in the first place. ;)) Nightstallion 18:59, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
I second that. :) E Pluribus Anthony 19:01, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, do you like helping others on Wikipedia? An account with extra buttons just needs to be in the hands of trusted and reliable users - and be used appropriately whenever they are needed. Do you think others here see you in that light? Personally, I think that those buttons can be used as often or as sparingly as you see fit - essentially at your leisure. Would it be something enjoyable for you? I can give you more suggestions if you like :-) --HappyCamper 19:32, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Mh, I think I'd say it would be enjoyable; and I most definitely do like helping others. (My GF and I have both been diagnosed with helper's syndrome quite often... ;)) And yes, I think more suggestions couldn't hurt, too, just to know what I'm missing out on. ;) Thanks! Nightstallion 20:26, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Let's see...well, there's the wonderful game of word association you could play - you could become the new local friendly admin there! Read the invisible text in here to see what I mean. Sometimes this place just amazes me - I'm so glad to know there are Wikipedians like you around. If you change your mind in the future, let me know :-) --HappyCamper 21:53, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Cute, that. No, for the record: I am interested in adminship, I was just wondering if you could tell me what other tasks I might be interested in doing, apart from WP:RM... Nightstallion 22:06, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, your post really got me thinking: in reality, there is not much you are missing out on! I generally just jump right into whatever needs doing, mostly cleanup tasks that require the "delete" button. WP:CP, WP:AFD, WP:IFD, WP:TFD, CAT:CSD are examples. For the "block" button, there's the staple RC patrol, and occasionally, the WP:3RR stuff. WP:AN generally lists all the active disputes, so if you are interested in helping out there, you can do that. Personally, what I find most rewarding is just helping new users. Sometimes, newcomers feel more at ease if they know they are receiving tips from an administrator, rather than from a typical account user. Does this help? There's also the reading list which summarizes other interesting things an admin can do. Let me know what you think :-) --HappyCamper 22:19, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
After some thought, I've come to the conclusion that I'll gladly accept. More tools definitely won't hurt anyone, and I can at least keep WP:RM cleaned up; I'm sure I'll find other activities that require admin interaction later on. Nightstallion 22:35, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
That sounds great! I agree with you as well - you can become whatever kind of administrator you feel comfortable with :-) It need not change the Wikipedian that you are. At your leisure, answer the questions here and let me know when you're done. I'll add it to the current list of RfAs after that. I would like to thank you for allowing me to nominate you too. Good luck! --HappyCamper 04:10, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

I answerred the questions and accepted the nomination. (Hope it's good enough like that...) Thanks again for nominating me! Nightstallion 07:09, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Polish extremism

I whish there was a German noticeboard to post this :( Anyway, could you go over those edits ([1], [2], [3], [4],[5], [6], [7], [8], [9]) of this newcomer, and see what needs reverting/replying? I would do this, but as I was already accused of being a Polish extremist, I'd prefer you or some non-Pole to deal with this...--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 10:25, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Mh. What exactly is the issue? To the best of my knowledge, there were ethnic majorities of Germans/Austrians in some parts of today's NW Czechia, NE Czechia and SW Poland... Exec's version of it sounds rather extremistic, though. Nightstallion Featured User Candidate 10:50, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, as I wrote, I'd prefer it if some non-Pole would revert his changes and told him on talk not to be a troll/revert warrior/flamer/whatever. And yes, I agree some facts he adds are not controversial, but the rest..., well, his additions are of the same value as statement 'Stalin was Russian. Russians committed terrible crimes. All Russians are criminals!' (note to any Russian reading it: this is irony, no offence meant). PS. If you reply to me on your talk page, please note I don't have a habit of checking other users talk pages for replies too often (it was just an accident I came here again so soon, I thought you ignored me :/). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 21:55, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Signature

Ok, please change your signature. this sort of junk is annoying. You're making diffs hard to read and cluttering up the page source. Conform a little and chow your signature to something reasonable. -- Netoholic @ 10:20, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Hmm, just letting you know I don't mind your sig.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 10:26, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
What's so bad about it? I've seen much worse around... Nightstallion Featured User Candidate 10:44, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
That is a poor argument. What you should be doing is to justify why you signature must be so lengthy. Vanity, at the cost of readability and usability, is selfish. -- Netoholic @ 22:25, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Try this

<code style="font-variant:small-caps">n g t t l i n<span style="position:relative; left:-71px; top:-2px; margin-right:-65px;">i h s a l o</span></code> ✉

The above produces n g t t l i ni h s a l o which looks similar to Nightstallion but requires less coding and allows for more frequent linebreaks in diff views, cf.:

<span style="font-variant:small-caps">Nightstallion</span> ✉

Or maybe this will give you a new idea of your own. Cheers. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 15:29, Dec. 27, 2005

You giving advice on signatures is amusing. -- Netoholic @ 22:25, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
It's good to see that you have a sense of humor. Should I test it by signing my posts with a flag (because I found a good one: )? All jokes aside, Netoholic, I'm only here because I happen to agree with you and Radiant on the line-break issue. And, no I do not actually plan to use an image, so could you cut me just a little slack? — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 06:47, Dec. 28, 2005
  • I second the above (by which I mean, Freak's remark). I don't particularly mind that your signature is lengthy, but the fact that it's all on a single line makes reading diffs awkward. If you can get a whitespace or line break in there it would be better. Radiant_>|< 16:29, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

RfA thanks from Deathphoenix

Hi Nightstallion,

I just wanted to thank you for supporting me in my RfA. To tell you the truth, I was surprised by all the support I've gotten. I never saw myself as more than an occasional Wiki-hobbyist.

My wife sends her curses, as Wikipedia will likely suck up more of my time. She jokingly (I think) said she was tempted to log on to Wikipedia just to vote Oppose and let everyone know that she didn't want her husband to be an admin.

I'll make sure your trust in me is founded. --Deathphoenix 14:49, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

No problem!

Hi there ... absolutely no problem! I was unsure whether I should have commented as I did (as I don't want to botch anything for you), but I feel it needed to be said. I find votes based on points of minutiae and disregarding everything else somewhat hypocritical: if Wikipedians have qualms about your signature or something else, they (and some have) should express and offer constructive criticism on your talk page beforehand (take a look at some recent issues on my talk page!), not on a RfAdmin where they are absolutely irrelevant and without real substance.

As for scripts, Sanskrit was just a suggestion (more to stand out): what about Cyrillic, or a combination? To me, that would demonstrate eclecticism, but may be cryptic. As for Greek, I'm glad we're so on the same page: note that there are differences between Ancient Greek and Modern (demotic) Greek, but it's all Greek to me. :) Good luck! E Pluribus Anthony 17:14, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Mh, what do you think of Inuktitut syllabics? ;) ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 18:17, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Sure. First and foremost, use a script that means something to or intrigues you. If it can't be rendered with a readily apparent script (e.g., Inuktitut characters appear as ???? on my screen), convert them into an image (e.g., see Nunavut) and combine or associate it with the flag. I can help, if you wish. Have fun! E Pluribus Anthony 22:03, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Wouldn't using an image screw up skins which don't use black as their default font colour, though? ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 22:17, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm, I don't think so: it'll merely provide contrast, just as your flag might. E Pluribus Anthony 22:26, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm specifically thinking of skins with blue or even black background; I think one of the available standard skins looks like that, IIRC... ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 22:28, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't think it'll be a problem for black text on a white background with small white border: check out Nunavut with a different skin and see if the concern is warranted. E Pluribus Anthony 22:31, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
...and given Grue's recent statement, perhaps you should do this with your current sig or restore it to a more neutral variant until after the vote? E Pluribus Anthony 22:39, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm fairly sure someone will find something to be criticized about an image of inuktitut syllabary in my signature, too, but your help would be greatly appreciated. Could you create the image for me, or would I need to specify what it should look like if Unicode worked properly for you? Thanks a lot, either way! ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 23:34, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
To each one's own! I only suggest a normal rendering now (restore another later) given the potential 'controversy' and concomitant dissent in your RfAdmin. Let me know what characters you'd like to render (I can and will easily do this with you prior sig), and I will 'graphify' it for you! E Pluribus Anthony 23:39, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

How are these:

The only thing I can't figure out (yet?) is how to wikify the signature to your user name. Anyhow, let me know if you want to change these or if you want anything else rendered. :) E Pluribus Anthony 01:00, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Looking good, I think. Only problem is that it shows up rather large on my PC, and that's probably the most serious problem with using images instead of text... As for wikilinking... I wouldn't know how you can link to anywhere but the image itself with an image... That would be the sceond big problem, then.
Regarding the current sig, I suppose you've good a unicode table for Canadian aboriginal syllabics handy? If so, it's simply NA I T S TA LI O N, without any points for lengthening or any spaces or anything like that. ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 05:38, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
OK. Remember, you can resize the images (I just did!): I have a 1680x1050 monitor, so they don't at all look big. Wikifying? Yes: the big issue – perhaps someone else can assist (though I don't know who)? I will craft an Inuktitut image based on your instructions; give me a day or two. Merci! E Pluribus Anthony 05:46, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I know about resizing, but I was worrying that it might show up too large or too small depending on the other users' screen resolution... Regarding the linking, I've filed a question at the help desk, but I think it's impossible currently. I can simply link to my user page afterwards, though (see here for ideas). Thanks a lot, again! ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 09:36, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Mh, there is a way, but I can't get it to work correctly when it's not in a separate paragraph. Never mind, then, I'll simply have all links after the image. Thanks again! ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 12:17, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Hi again! After reading the guidelines, images are discouraged in Wp sigs. Ah well – use the images I created for your user or talk pages or however else you see fit. And I still think you can use the dual-flag image in your signature: it is slight enough to not cause any problems yet distinct enough to ID you. Happy new year! E Pluribus Anthony 19:02, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

I figured you could use it, i'd love for you to critique a potential new sig of mine. However, that new one above works alot better than your old sigs in terms of functionality(the one you're talking about with freak, not the question marks). karmafist 19:47, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Question and heart to heart

While I haven't done this with anyone else and really have moved forward from my rough RFA, I noticed what you said on RObChurch's RFA: "While his actions were despicable, he made amends; and I'm generally in favour of second (and third and...) chances."

Now I have voted for ROb because I agree with you, but what happeend with him JUST happened and I think it was at least as bad (if not,e asily, worse) as what happened with me in September, yet you voted against me and said: "Sorry, nothing against you personally; I believe you that you got caught up in the BD777 affair and that you had no ill intentions, but I'd advise you to wait a few months before applying again, in case this fails. I'll gladly support then–your edits are good, and your record is only marred by this one single issue in my opinion–but it's too soon now, sorry."

I'm sorry, but I'd love to hear how you distinguish these responses. At first blush (and I'm trying not have sour grapes here, because I do respect you and would love to have your support later) it just seems contradictory. You were willing to give Rob second third etc. chances for something that really bad (despicable) that just happened because he amended himseld, but not me (with no illintent) when I amended and it was further off, but that was "too soon" for you and I wasn;t given that second chance and your vote. I'm sorry man, I just don't get that.

Is it because Rob is so experienced that you felt you could trust him much quicker than you could trust me? If that's the case, then I can understand that. It's just that when I saw your vote, I was taken back, because I wish you had adopted that same philosphy with me, it woudl have been appreciated and not mispalced, because there's no way I was going to abuse the tools if people would have given them to me and I think almost everyone knew that. Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have voted for you in your RFA but I don;t want you to think that my vote will change and that you have to kiss my butt to keep it or something. Minus a really nasty response, I will continue voting for you, I just want to hear what you have to say. I just wanted to make that clear. Thanks!Gator (talk) 14:25, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

My decision was mostly based on what I had seen of Robchurch before the incident; I just happened to have little interaction with you. It may also be the case that I was positively influenced by his very strong action to show he realized his error. I have been considering my vote on this RfA for a couple of hours now, and may yet change it to neutral; I want you to know, though, that neither this nor your RfA were taken lightly by me, and that I wish you no ill. What I said at your RfA still stands (especially the bit about me nominating you at a later date, if you so wish). Take care! ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 14:29, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Gladly. ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 22:13, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Your question...

It isn't the number of edits you have. You have far exceeded my standards, but I too am a little concerned about the whole "minor edit" thing. When people are doing RC Patrol, some of us don't check minor edits, or simply have them hidden in their preferences. It makes it hard to make sure the edits are useful... but that doesn't seem to be a problem with you. It seems you make useful edits. I also have a couple of other concerns but they have more to do with me than with you. I am sorry. I noticed you making less minor edits, and could support you in the future, although I'm sure you'll pass and be a wonderful Admin. See you around, my friend. --LV (Dark Mark) 16:29, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

If you would like to tell me what your other concerns are (the ones which have more to do with you than with me), I'd still like to hear them; maybe there are other things about me I don't notice that could be problems for others.
Regarding the whole minor edits issue, I've know disabled the automatic minor edits checking in my preferences, and instead of regularily forgetting to disable the minor edits checkbox, I now regularily forget to enable it when I do make minor edits... Well, I'll get used to it at some point, I s'pose.
Thanks for your explanation, either way. Take care! ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 18:44, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps I'll send you an email explaining my feelings sometime, but at this point it doesn't really matter. It appears you are well on your way to being sysopped, and once it happens, I trust you will use your powers wisely. Thanks, and again, sorry. --LV (Dark Mark) 18:54, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Okay then. No harm done, thanks for explaining in so much detail. Again, take care! ᓇᐃᑦᔅᑕᓕᐅᓐ 18:57, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Is this one of the fair use policy issues? I s'pose there's not too much that can be done about it, if we have to let go of the logo. Love your icon collection. Do you make any yourself? I'm thinking of making some new icons to denote the 200 or so WP languages; small circular ones that are small and unobtrusive enough to insert into section headers and titles. Perhaps starting with flags where a single country is iconically linked to the language... have any good ideas? +sj + 10:11, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Legislative election in R.O. China

I take that you list all presidential and legislative elections around the world. I think there will be held in December 2007

See also: List_of_Legislative_Yuan_elections

And an interesting change described in ROC legislative election, 2004

The legislative elections [in 2004] were expected to be the last in Taiwan using the single non-transferable vote, as a constitutional amendment is pending to convert the election format in the 2007 legislative elections. The SVMD system created interesting strategies such as vote allocation, as parties did not want to nominate too many candidates for a district, out of fear that it would divide party votes among too many candidates...

--Chochopk 13:51, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm mostly interested in those elections which have the potential to change the country's status in some kind of way, aye. What's your source for this information? Thanks either way! —Nightstallion (?) 14:10, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
My hometown is there so I watch closely what's going on, although I'm in the States now. So I just know without needing to look it up. This legislative election is unlike any previous because of the change on voting rules described above. I will explain why this will have great political impact. The Legislative Yuan has earned an infamous reputation of inefficient, costly, unless, and even corrupt over the years. This perception is consistent across supporters of any party. So someone proposed to cut the seats in half (which requires the approval of delegates themselves!!). And to address the weird single non-transferable vote, precincts are redrawn with smaller sizes. For example, Taipei City had 2 precincts, and each selects 10 delegates, the 10 people who get the highest vote. So the problem is the 10th place could get only half the vote than the first place in a precinct, and they are both 1 seat. After the change, Taipei City will probably be divided into 10 precincts, where each elects 1 delegate. In larger cities like Taipei, the number of seats each party has will be reduced proportionally. However, this is not the case in outer island counties like Kinmen or Matsu. Each of these counties had 1 seat before the change, and they will continue to contribute 1 seat after the change in 2007. And these counties are guaranteed to be represented by the Pan-Blue Coalition. As a result, this change will favor the Pan-Blue Coalition, who lean towards better integration with Mainland China. When the Pan-Green Coalition realized the disadvantage to themselves, they already committed the "cut in half" reform. And there is no way they could back out (or it will be very ugly) because "cut in half" is universally supported. This reform will also drive further consolidation from many parties into 2 large ones. --Chochopk
Well, as a supporter of Taiwanese independence, the only thing I can say to that is f*ck. What're the chances of the Pan-Greens keeping the presidential post in 2008, then? Not good, either, I s'pose? —Nightstallion (?) 09:58, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Wha?

How are you? Is this what the fuss is about — no? If so and that's all, I'm going to comment again on your RfAdmin, if you don't mind, and it may not be pretty (for the topic of note, I mean). E Pluribus Anthony 08:07, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

I think this is what he refers to, yes. And while I naturally can't tell you what to post or not to post, let me just shortly point you to WP:CIVIL before it gets too not-pretty. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 08:13, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Indeed. However, I may comment that my vote and views on the matter are up to me and E Pluribus Anthony's personal views on my decision are unwarrented and unjustified. Please do let me talk and think for myself and leave my decisions up to me. Thank you. -MegamanZero|Talk 08:19, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry, when am I not? :) E Pluribus Anthony 08:17, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
To each one's own, MZ. Similarly, if you see the RfAdmin, my comments are completely warranted and justified. Think more before commenting and exposing your assertions to criticism. E Pluribus Anthony 08:57, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Don't play me for a fool. I asked you to allow me my own opinion and right to think for myself (You're giving bad advice) and you have continued to hound and not desist. When I make decisions, I do think through them, and just due to the fact you disagree with my point of view, you believe (as you put it) I must Think more before commenting and exposing your assertions to criticism. Ridiculous. I will continue to have my own mind and thought process. Indeed, I quote my previous thesis: my vote and views on the matter are up to me and you will stop your infringing of my rights; I do not negotiate deals with stalkers/hounders/bullies/whatever. You will get the hell away from my right of way, no ifs, no buts, NO CONDITIONS. I asked you to stop your hounding and you are continuing to do so, there is no reason why I shouldn't complain. I have been more patient with this than I should have. -MegamanZero|Talk 11:50, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, Ns, that we're muddying your talk page. MZ: you're playing yourself for a fool. You're entitled to your opinion and so am I: I will not sit back while you hypocritically admonish an admin candidate because of your own abortive attempt (with unanimous dissent) and fallacious rationale. Quote what you will; so will I (Wp policies and procedures) – my comments are non-negotiable and yours further prove IMO your ridiculous position. I invite you to prove charges of hounding or infringing your rights, which are? Summarily: if you cannot take constructive criticism, and everything thus far indicates that you can't properly, you're the one that needs to make peace with it. End communication. E Pluribus Anthony 12:05, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
What constructive critisim, my I inquire...? When Nightstallion answered my query regarding what improvement I needed improvement in, I thanked him for it. Also note, that I expected that rfa to fail- I went through with it to allow my self some initiative, and figure which parts of my wikipedian habbits needed improvement. In that regard, it is a success. Also note, I voted neutral on nightstallion's rfa which (as you put it) hypocritically admonishs an admin canidate. Proof that your hounding of my desicion is motivated by whim and POV is pretty much summed up here. I, however am finished with defending what I can and cannot think. You may have the last word for a bit a fun, if you wish. -MegamanZero|Talk 12:16, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
And your diff proves? The comment is in support of another user who asserted similar sentiments to mine. And you still have proven nothing. I stand by those comments and others; my position is based not on whim or POV per se, but on your erroneous argumentation and misrepresentation of facts (e.g., "even several berucrats [sic] and users commented that it was uncallled for on the rfa talk page"). Ns offered you constructive criticism long ago, and in asserting your neutrality you missed his response and, based on this faulty premise, then accused him of lack of good faith and that he was "somewhat unfit" for being an Admin. And over what: two words, that were blown completely out of proportion? Pot, meet kettle.
As for my critique: I've clarified matters for others who may vote, and I've cited Wp policies and procedures for collective benefit; you then accuse me of hounding, et al. If you wish to be coddled, you're sadly mistaken. I will gladly offer feedback to anyone and take it, but I will no longer waste time wondering or discussing what you can or cannot think. Bye! NYC statehood userbox

Hi there, I was wondering what exactly you did to the template of this userbox.

I've been trying to follow the whole Userbox controversy/melodrama/whatever, but find myself often getting lost. I think I understand that transclusion is bad or something... and substitution is better (less server load, from what I gather), however the userbox layout seems less complicated than with what you replaced it. I guess it's just very confusing. Any help you could offer on explaining it would be greatly appreciated. Thnx. hellenica 09:51, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

I added subst: after the first {{, so that the userbox template code was pasted into the User NYC statehood one. This is important because meta-templating – i.e., calling up templates in templates themselves – are a strain on server resources, and if we use that excessively, there's a higher risk that someone will get severely annoyed by userboxes. If I can help with anything (did you want to change something about the userbox?), drop me a line. Take care! —Nightstallion (?) 09:58, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

OS:NetBSD UserBOX

Hey I see that it's you who made the NetBSD userbox and I have been thinking about changing it. I personally don't like the backgroundcolor. I found another netbsd userbox and I think it looks better. My suggestion is to use it's background color #FFCC99 instead of darkorange. What do you think? Nros 22:11, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Mh, okay, fair enough. —Nightstallion (?) 22:59, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia 21:45, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Question about banning

Hi, i was wondering if it would be possible if you took a look into getting an ip address banned. I didnt know if this was possible, so i thought i would ask first.

Can you please look into getting 86.0.130.176 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) banned from editing? They have made a number of vandalisms on both the Barking page and my userpage.

My vote in your RfA

I opposed your candidacy in part because of your signature (which is atrocious) but more because your contribution history and other factors suggest that you do not have a broad enough understanding of Wikipedia culture to be trustable as an administrator. It appears to me that you are one of many recent admin candidates who has spent more time mucking in the community than you have in contributing to the encyclopedia, and I have become quite leery of such candidates of late.

I hope that you will spend more time contributing to the encyclopedia now that you're an administrator. Kelly Martin (talk) 22:02, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

My signature has been changed, so that problem should've been taken care of. I'd be interested to know, though, which factors lead you to believe I know too little of Wikipedia culture? AFAIWA, adminship was supposed to be "no big deal"? I can understand your oppose vote now, though, so thanks for explaining it. —Nightstallion (?) 08:25, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Nightstallion. There are some people saying that Image:Flag of Moldova.svg is wrong (e.G.). It'd be greatful if you can transform Image:Moldova flag large-02.png into SVG and reupload it. Schaengel89 22:34, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't know how to do that; you should ask Chanheigeorge about that – he recently transformed the png version of the Flag of Mexico into the current version of commons:Image:Flag of Mexico.svg. Cheers! —Nightstallion (?) 08:25, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

A huge favour ...

Yes: nice bar!

As well, I've a favour of sorts. I've been involved in helping to provide form and function to the upcoming Arbitration Committee (ArbComm) elections, including rules which Jimbo has edited (and, thus, effectively endorsed). All of this is rooted in prior polls and later discussions which are still underway: these have generally been productive, but haven't been completely painless. Nonetheless, a mild log-jam has occurred regarding an open-election procedure, and the discussion is now getting rather repetitive. (As per Jimbo's fiat, an open process closely and reasonably modelled on the RfAdmin process is IMO already fait accompli.) In any event ...

the elections are slated to start on Mon., but nobody as yet – uninvolved admins/bureaucrats, importantly – seems willing to exhibit leadership to orchestrate everything and ensure an effective/impartial election. I'm a lowly Wikipedian and have neither the authority nor time to move things forward effectively.

So, are you willing or able to do so or to assist? I think, after a thorough read, this would involve configuring ArbComm vote pages before Sun. and monitoring them throughout the election (two weeks) to ensure Wp norms of behaviour are adhered to.

If you can't or won't, I understand, and feel free to weigh in. Let me know if you've any questions; thanks again for your consideration and anticipated co-operation! E Pluribus Anthony 10:25, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Mh. Seeing as how I've got a random amount of time most workdays, I think I should be able to help, but I'm rather sure I won't be able to do all of the work. I'm in principle of course happy to help you. So, what exactly can I do to help? —Nightstallion (?) 12:25, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
Great! I've also solicited others, and I hope some interested (and preferably uninvolved) parties will involve themselves unofficially soon.
To start: I think the ArbComm vote page template needs to be refined, devised anew, whatever and, once done, needs to be copied and customised for each candidate. I think they can be transcluded somehow. Anyhow, head on over to the talk page/section for more info and to co-ordinate with Geni et al.
I'll help if I can, but am neither empowered nor can I contribute the time to do so. Thanks again! E Pluribus Anthony 12:56, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello, and possible WP:3RR/WP:POINT violations

Hi there, how are you? Can you take a look at Central America and its talk page? Over the last little while, discussions and edits have been made to open up the definition of the term (which isn't clear cut, as you may recall of European/Asian defs/recent edits, etc.) and as part of my quest to balance various geographic definitions in Wp. However, SqueakBox has repeatedly added 'neutrality' tags to make a point (without actually citing sources to the contrary) and dually adding some useful information while, IMO, making mildly stylistically bad edits.

In response, I've been removing the tags and restoring the status quo (more or less). In so doing, I realise I might be in contravention of WP:3RR, but please probe the history and you'll note that my edits have also accommodated his POV. To that end, I feel I've made good faith edits to the article throughout and maintain that his position regarding neutrality, without consensus and given recent discussion, is unjustified. In any event, if SB has violated 3RR or WP:POINT, are sanctions warranted? Thanks! E Pluribus Anthony 05:31, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

I've stated my opinion on the talk page. 's that okay?
Regarding how I am – slightly sleepy, as is usual when my girlfriend's sleeping over. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 06:51, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes: perfect. I think a reiteration of the diffs after the common list, as you suggest, might be sufficient. And I'm always nice, am I not?  ;) Admittedly I'm no saint, but WP:POINT can try the patience of anyone.
As for sleep, with or without anyone else, I often need to just take a chill-pill :) E Pluribus Anthony 07:00, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
'f course, we're all always nice. ;) I just prinicipally like to tell people to be nice in general, for
  • firstly, it's nicer than if you told one person in specific;
  • secondly, it's never wrong to be even nicer;
  • and thirdly, it reminds me that I sometimes should be nicer. ;)
Regarding the chill-pill... 'm afraid we would keep each other awake for most of the night even if we both took it. ;) How're you, BTW?
Nightstallion (?) 07:06, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm fine, though crazy-busy .... need s'more pills. :)
Regarding niceties: I hear you and completely understand. Remember, as well, that nice can be subjective: take a peek at the ArbComm elections (and thanks for your offer to help, it seems to be proceeding with little incident, but still weigh in if compelled), and you'll realise that niceties – like beauty – is often in the eye of the beholder. E Pluribus Anthony 07:12, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I realize that. As I've said, I'm happy to help, though I don't know yet whether I'll have the time to monitor it closely; if you need assistance with anything specific, though, just drop me a line. (If it's urgent, per e-mail.) Take care! —Nightstallion (?) 07:15, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Great, and ... E Pluribus Anthony 08:33, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Request to act regarding neutral ArbComm votes

Actually: perhaps you can weigh in again ... methinks your assistance is required. Some voters have taken it upon themselves to register "neutral votes" and have added said sections to ArbComm vote pages. Arguably, these are effectively "extensive" comments that contravene the election rules Jimbo has established (to vote Y/N) and that most feel should be moved to the vote talk pages or treated alternatively.

I'm not an Admin and, thus, do not believe myself to be sufficiently empowered to do so (but I would if I could, for future ref). If you believe the above to be true, can you weigh in and move them to the talk pages? Feel free to deny without any prejudice, but some contend that abstentions (as per the election rules) should be treated as superfluous. Thanks! E Pluribus Anthony 08:33, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

I replied at the first wikilink. —Nightstallion (?) 08:45, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
TY so much! I have as well, with a minor suggestion/edition ... my knees still wobble. :) E Pluribus Anthony 08:57, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
As well, candidate Tony Sidaway has withdrawn and locked his page, but pro forma his neutral votes should still be moved and I can't do that. Please? E Pluribus Anthony 09:01, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Done and done. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 09:05, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

€2 commemorative coins FAC

I'm working on converting to "proper citations" using this template. --TantalumTelluride 21:55, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

I've converted the first citation to what I think is the most preferred format. I have some "real-life" business to conduct, so I won't be able to convert the other citations until tommorow around this time of day. Since the article is going through FAC, I've put a temporary version in my sandbox, so maybe you can convert the rest of the citations yourself by copyng the first one from my sandbox. For the second citation, just replace the parameter "1" with "2" and so on for the rest of them. You can find more info at Template talk:Ref label. Good luck! --TantalumTelluride 22:14, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm fairly sure that owing to real-life obstructions, I won't be able to do it until Thursday, so you'll likely have finished before me. Thanks for helping! If you happen to have any idea as to how the first and next-to-last sections could be re-written not to include bullet points (I personally do not think they are currently in list format, but whatever), I'd also appreciate that. Thanks again! —Nightstallion (?) 23:10, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Mh, on second thought, I might get to it tomorrow morning. I still need your help with the section rewrite, though. Thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 23:22, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
OK, I've finished the converting the citations using the simpler footnotes template, which was sufficient in this case. And as far as bullets are concerned, I never have understood the difference between lists and regular articles. I mean, sometimes a page is obviously a list, and sometimes it's obviously a regular article. But what about lists that provide details about each item? And what about articles that present information graphically, such as €2 commemorative coins? There is a huge gray area between lists and articles. Well, if the article doesn't pass FAC, then it should have no problem in FLC. --TantalumTelluride 04:40, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Saint-Gaudens gold eagle, awarded for your work at €2 commemorative coins.

You've obviously worked very hard on this article, and your hard work is much more appreciated than is apparent in the FAC. They've been getting pretty strict over there recently, especially when it comes to references and verifiability. I remember way back, when I was just an anonymous IP address, and it was "beneficial" but not necessary to cite sources. But the times have changed, and Wikipedia has grown by leaps and bounds. We're getting so much media attention now that we have to resort to rigorous line-by-line citation in order to minimize mistakes and unverified claims in our best articles. I might have awarded you a barnstar, but I think a coin is more appropriate in this case. Here's one of my favorite designs: the Saint-Gauden's gold eagle. This one is a modern (1999) gold bullion; I don't think Wikipedia has an image depicting one of the orignal legal-tender coins with Roman numerals. I hope this one is satisfactory. --TantalumTelluride 05:08, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! And again, thanks for your work with the references. Personally, I'd say the article's formatting is fine as it is, since the "lists" help to ease readability... Well, let's see where the FAC goes from here. Thanks again! —Nightstallion (?) 06:43, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Great article - thanks for the tip. --Red King 13:02, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

hello Nightstallion, how are you?

Slightly stressed due to nitpicking here, to be frank.

The user above has continously pushed for his POV on articles, he has been warned before. especially concerning articles on South Tyrol, Trentino-South Tyrol, Italy and Bozen-Bolzano. In the case of South Tyrol, the edits had to be reverted at least 4 times within the last 24 hours, imo a violation of the Three-revert rule. What is the proper procedure in such a case, or do you have any advice? with kind regards Gryffindor 23:01, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

I propose letting WP:RM run its course one final time (with the likely result a no consensus), and then not touch the issue for a year at least. Since I'm personally trying my hardest not to let any shred of Austrian patriotism guide my actions, Italian POV pushers are starting to annoy me somewhat, but that doesn't mean that WP:AGF, WP:CIVIL and WP:PROCESS don't apply. 's that okay with you? —Nightstallion (?) 23:21, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
I think that after a voting has been decided upon (between the two names), it cannot be voted upon again for another 6 months. Do South Tyrol if you wish *doublesigh* however I think with Trentino-South Tyrol a voting is not even possible according to rules. Gryffindor 23:29, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Discussion

This is my one and only account. If others are sockpuppeting, anyone Italian, German, or Martian, I disagree. If you really have the inclination of seeing a compromise for my (our?) region, lets go about it. Because I've just seen bias every which way.. and I've been following WP for a couple years. Rossifumi-gp 09:16, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

In fact, I'm 50% Austrian!!! Rossifumi-gp 09:21, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Your nationality is of no importance to me, be assured. If I have wrongly accused you of being a sock puppet, I'm terribly sorry; this matter will hopefully be resolved shortly through WP:RFCU. Again, I do not mean to attack you in any way, it just seems highly likely that you might be a sock puppet. —Nightstallion (?) 09:25, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Indeed as it should not be. I'm making the point that my family is from near Bolzano for centuries and I have no bias either way. I personally do not care for the term Alto Adige or Sudtirol because they are just claims on my region by different governments through history. But I do highly recommend a comprimise of using both as I've seen you suggest, because otherwise I can see a war on this going on for years. You can not blame Italians, Germans, anyone.. its a matter of sensitivities that are brought up when it looks like someone(s) are trying to impose a particular viewpoint. If you are from this region, you know that many have through history.. and its nice that it is a calm place now, and how ridiculous is it that WP causes craziness. Inappropriate DYK

Hi, you updated DYK with "...that only six eurozone member states have not yet issued €2 commemorative coins, and only four have no plans to do so by 2006?" You did this without going through the process of listing it on Template talk:Did you know. Also, the DYK you listed was from an article more than 5 days old. Nor did you archive the DYK you replaced. I can understand the importance you may attach to the DYK fact you inserted, as it is from an article started by you. However, please understand that following process is paramount for at least the main page entries. Adminship gives us the privilege of editing the protected pages - but it does not mean that we have the license of doing what we want - the guidelines for editing the tmplate are clearly visible in the edit mode. You would appreciate that, with 700 admins available, what the consequences would be, if each one updates the FA or DYK to his own choice - it would result in chaos. Please follow the processes properly in future. As my watchlist is huge, I'll not be in a position to monitor your response. I don't see any need for a response from your side, but if you do, please leave it on my talkpage. Thanks, --Gurubrahma 09:27, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi, the history of the article shows 23 December as the date it was created. Anyways, I understand and appreciate that your edit was in good faith but I was concerned that the process was not followed. In future, whenever you start an article, nominate an interesting fact from the same on Template talk:Did you know under the date of creation of the article asap. the earlier, the better as it can be fine-tuned with respect to suggestions from other editors. The same process can be used when you find an interesting fact from a new article started by others. Best, --Gurubrahma 09:37, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Edits/reverts to Europe article

Hi there! How are you? A particular user, roaming using a number of IP accounts, has continually been making uncited POV edits to the Europe article regarding Turkey and Cyprus ... including to the table of countries below where distinctions are clearly indicated with provisos. I've been reverting him periodically and this editor's changes/reverts haven't been accompanied by any summaries, sources, or discussions. (This editor has also been making a few other edits that aren't POV/problematic per se).

Frankly, I'm frustrated by having to revert periodically/incessantly and don't want to violate WP:3RR, but I consider those edits POV-pushing and even vandalism. Guidance? Are punitive measures in order? Thanks for your guidance and assistance. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 10:37, 11 January 2006

Ns, can you take action or direct me appropriately regarding the above: User:85.101.16.207 continues to not discuss changes (as requested) and is not providing edit summaries/sources to support them. This edition is more than conciliatory in incorporating the various points of view, but this is getting irksome. Thanks. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 13:30, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
PS: if you're wondering why the population value for Turkey appears low, it's not – the provisos are explicit: as with the other tables I've created for continents and in my quest to clarify defs, my intention is to create a table of Asian countries (when I get a few moments) and to include the balance there without double-counting. Thanks. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 13:38, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Quite frankly, I don't know; I've only been an administrator for a short time, I'm still trying to work myself into things like these. Try WP:ANB for now; sorry I couldn't help immediately. —Nightstallion (?) 13:39, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Hey there ... no problem! I understand. I will shortly, and forgive me if this request has added burden for you. :) E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 13:44, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi again; I've left a note on the noticeboard (no response yet), but the anon IP(s) (yet another one now) persist in edits/reverts without discussion and are levelling inappropriate POV/accusations re. incorrect figures: in an attempt to be NPOV, the figures/provisos derived are from the transcontinental nation article (with figures from the World Gazetteer online), etc. I don't know what to do and am frustrated, and think it silly to subjugate myself to 3RR provisos if noone can or will take action against the anons for doing the same. Assistance? E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 20:55, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Report violators of WP:3RR to WP:AN/3RR, and they will be taken care of. If they persist even after that, a block may be in order. Hope that helps, if it doesn't, get back to me. Cheers! —Nightstallion (?) 06:41, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi there! I did ... prompt action wasn't forthcoming (and none appears to have occurred still, though) and the warring continued, hence my actions. Apparently, said edits by users have been reverted elsewhere by others. Forgive my conniption fit; I'll keep you apprised. :) E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 07:53, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
No problem. I can understand your conniption only too well... ;) —Nightstallion (?) 08:02, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

After the move request a few days ago, you moved Montréal-Ouest, Quebec back to Montreal West, Quebec. However the person who moved it, has moved it back again. Flag of SADR

Hi, Thank you for your intervention in this page.

  • The name "flag of WS" isn't correct since WS is administrated by Morocco.
  • The name "flag of WS" isn't neutral since Morocco refuses this flag.
  • The major problem of WS issues is that there is a confusion between WS (a territory disputed between Morocco and Polisario) and SADR (the republic proclaimed by Pölisario) over this territory.
  • It's not about convincing everybody of everything, it's about neutrality of WP, using the naming "flag of WS" is without any doubt a pro-polisario stance since it accept Polisario's POV and refuses the Moroccan one.
  • I think that naming it "the flag of SADR" comply with WP neutrality principles and is consistant with similar pages (Flag of the Republic of China)

Best regards. Daryou 15:34, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

In my opinion, the issue is more complicated than that. It's not really Morocco vs. Polisario, it's rather Morocco vs. Polisario + United Nations (the Moroccans were supposed to hold a referendum since 1991). "Flag of SADR" is definitely POV, since it favours the Moroccan POV; "Flag of WS" is also POV, since it favours the non-Moroccan POV. IMO, the non-Moroccan POV is the more neutral one (since a larger number of countries recognize SADR as the legitimate government in WS, whereas a minuscule number of countries recognizes Morocco's claim; the majority take no official stance). One could also argue that SADR is essentially the government in exile of WS.
What do you think of these ideas? Thanks for participating in the discussion! —Nightstallion (?) 20:35, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Hi, I understand your point, however I think that there is a little mis-information, Morocco were never supposed to hold any referendum since 1991, because simply this referundum is supposed to be hold by the Minorsu. And the term "Flag of SADR" isn't at all POV, it's nothing but the truth, it's a fact, no-one (except maybe Morocco) contests that, by then if this term was a POV it's rather an anti-Moroccan POV.
    • The common name is still "Flag of Western Sahara"; and yes, Morocco is the one obstructing the referendum.
      • Do you have reliable and neutral sources naming this flag "Flag of WS", what do you mean by common name in that case? Can you prove that Morocco is obstructing the referundum and what does this have to do with our discussion?
  • There is a general confusion between Western Sahara (a territory disputed between Morocco and Polisario, and administrated by Morocco) and the SADR (a Republic self-proclaimed by the Polisario and not recognized by the UN and the Arab League but only by 45 countries). Each perty of the conflict has its own arguments. The UN and the Minurso are trying now to resolve the conflict by a referundum.
    • You aren't listening to me: 45 countries acknowledge the SADR's claim to Western Sahara, a few dozen more originally also did so, but meanwhile claim to be neutral, and only three or four countries acknowledge Morocco's claim to the Western Sahara.
      • Do you mean that WP should take a Pro-Polisario stance in this conflict?
  • According to WP:NPOV: "First, and most importantly, consider what it means to say that unbiased writing presents conflicting views without asserting them. Unbiased writing does not present only the most popular view; it does not assert the most popular view is correct after presenting all views; it does not assert that some sort of intermediate view among the different views is the correct one"
    • And according to WP:NC, we should use the most common name. In my opinion, "Flag of Western Sahara" is sufficiently neutral, and it's definitely more common.
      • In my opinion this is a false and pro-polisario biased name. According to WP:NC, the most common name is used for persons and things.
Best regrads. Daryou 20:30, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Cheers, —Nightstallion (?) 20:43, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
      • And the conflict about this flag isn't at all between Morocco and polisario+UN because simply the UN don't recognize the SADR and its flag.
      • Each party of the conflict has its own arguments. Morocco says that WS is an integral part of its territory, Polisario says that WS should be independant and governed by the SADR. The UN and the Minurso are trying now to resolve the conflict by a referundum, and don't recognize neither Moroccan souvereinty nor the SADR.
      • The term "flag of WS" reflects the Polisario's POV in this conflict. The term "Flag of SADR" reflects a fact
Best regards. Daryou 21:43, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Closing of requested move at 100,000 BC (Doctor Who)

Hey, Nightstallion. You recently closed a requested move of 100,000 BC (Doctor Who) with "Not moved, vote is evil, evidence is inconclusive." Could you expand on that a bit, either at the talk page or at Wikipedia:WikiProject Doctor Who#100,000 BC vs. An Unearthly Child (where the move was being discussed in an effort to reach consensus before the RM was filed)? I think I understand your reasoning, but given that three of five votes — and five of seven comments by contributors — were in favor of the move, it would be helpful to have a bit more explanation of your judgement. (To summarize the arguments: no title was given on-screen for the story. Production documents from the time of broadcast refer to it as "100,000 BC", but these were not widely known about for many decades. A novelization, video release and (next week) DVD release all use "An Unearthly Child", the name of the first episode of the story. "An Unearthly Child" is generally more widely used, but "100,000 BC" is more accurate.) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 16:52, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, basically: Things like these shouldn't be decided by votes, if possible at all; and I think the evidence in this case was inconclusive, and I tend to favour correct names over common names in most cases... You can ask another admin to take a look at the move request, though, I wouldn't mind. 's that okay? —Nightstallion (?) 20:35, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I figured that it was about the preference for consensus over voting. (We were working on it before someone decided that they'd take the quick and easy path and hold a vote.) As for correct vs. common usage, I see your argument, but the guideline here favors common names over correct names (which was what swayed my own vote). I think I will ask another admin to have a look at the request, just to get another outside opinion. Thanks! —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 23:30, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Gladly. (And I still hope we'll see the day when the guideline will be Wikipedia:Naming conventions (correct names)... ;)) —Nightstallion (?) 10:16, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Were you trying to close the vote on the Nazi book?

If so, isn't there a header or something that goes at the top, letting people know that the vote is over? Or does that not hold for RMs? Many thanks, BYT 12:02, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

To be frank, I never figured out how the subst-template-way worked, and always did it this way — haphazardly, possibly. Do you happen to know how it works? —Nightstallion (?) 12:03, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Found it! Here you go: [11] -- peace, BYT 12:56, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Flamarande

To be really honest I don´t understand a lot about userboxes, I simply copied the example on the page wikipedia:Userboxes and adapted it as best as I could and understood. It was quite easy and I can´t understand why the main example is totally diffrent from the normal boxes used everywhere and I don´t know why the easy version isn´t used. I guess it is a very "simple version" for newbies to begin with. This new version of yours is better-looking, and I have nothing against that but I simply don´t understand the parameters that are being used. I will not revert them, but in the spirit of fairness, I must ask you to make the same improvements (centralisation of the Family motto) at the other "family boxes", if you don´t mind, of course. I also would be thankfull for a reply, Thanks. Flamarande 21:25, 18 January 2006 (UTC) P.S.: Noch ein anderer verückter Deutsch-sprecher? Wir sind wirklich überall. :)

Oh, of course. No problem. Will do so shortly. Und jepp, wir übernehmen langsam die englische Wikipedia. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 21:27, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, but now I cannot improve them (read above). No real problem, though. Look, I hate to bore you now but I looked at the boxes and I think that the "frame" (Umrahmmung) of some of them are better-looking than others. I think that the framecolour should be the same as the major main box, like the "Stark-box" instead of the boxes of the Targaryen, Lannister and Tyrrel. I am not 100% sure in the Tully and Baratheon case. If you don´t mind to change them...... You are the the Keeper now, I´m afraid. Thanks. Flamarande 21:53, 18 January 2006 (UTC) PS: I am absolutely sure that the ASoIaF box should remain as it is. Flamarande 21:58, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand what you mean? As for why the code is now different and more difficult to use, I'm afraid it's necessary; having userbox in userboxes violates WP:AUM, which shouldn't be done if not absolutely necessary. —Nightstallion (?) 21:59, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

:) Flamarande 22:20, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I think that the userboxes are quite finished, for now. Please, take a look and give me your honest opinion.

In the future, perhaps, I will add boxes for the Dothraki and the Faceless Men but I am hampered by the facts that the Dothraki don´t have any "main color" and motto, while the Faceless Men motto "Valar morghulis" is cool, but which colour should I use? What do you think? Flamarande 21:31, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Mh. Something like light grey and black/white, possibly? —Nightstallion (?) 22:47, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

I see no problems with the references. As for changes, you may wish to repeat the list with the nations listed in alphabetical order (see List of U.S. states by elevation for a Featured List that does something similiar). --Allen3 talk 00:14, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, I had based this list on another list, but not on this one, but on list of U.S. states by date of statehood (currently a FLC). The alphabetical list is more or less at European Union member states, anyway, isn't it? —Nightstallion (?) 05:33, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Mh, I did think of some additions, including another way to order them in (by application date). Will include those additions in the next few hours. —Nightstallion (?) 05:41, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Your rejection of move Rio de la Plata --->>> River Plate

I suggest that no "consensus" was necessary for this move as River Plate is the common name in international English, judging by the only tool we have, which is Google searches, and any appearances to the contrary are a result of the origins/biases of the people debating. As you would know, we are supposed to use common names, not a name decided by a very unrepresentative "committee". Grant65 | Talk 09:14, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Ask another admin to take a look at the discussion and move it, then. It's not like I'm the only one. —Nightstallion (?) 11:56, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words about my (new) signature. How's the language studying going? Japanese is still giving me fits. ⇔   | | ⊕ ⊥ (t-c-e)? 13:48, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Basically, I'm currently trying to find suitable courses for Swedish and improving my Spanish; Japanese will most likely be on the backburner until I'm at university. And you? —Nightstallion (?) 13:52, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm still living in Japan, so it is Japanese full-time for me. My Spanish (really the Romance languages in general) is seriously deteriorating in the meantime. When I get back to the US next year, I'll try and get some of that back, but sadly I'll be going back to school full time - and from what I've heard, first year in law school isn't exactly the best place to study a language ;) Good luck at university - where and when are you going?   ⇔   | | ⊕ ⊥ (t-c-e) 14:01, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Comment: I later went to your user page and found out where you are going to school and when. I am on top of things today, obviously. Good luck to you!   ⇔   | | ⊕ ⊥ (t-c-e) 14:06, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Was about to answer it anyway. ;) I'm mostly going to study Technical Mathematics because of my experience with Austrian Mathematics Olympiads; while my results weren't stellar (except for once in 7th grade, i.e. at 17 years of age), they were mostly okay and I enjoyed it. I happen to have talents for almost all study-related topics (i.e. not just the classical good-at-science-bad-at-languages talent or vice versa, but all around A's throughout my school career), so I pretty much could study whatever I wanted. And believe me, if I had the time, I would study a lot of subjects. ;) As it is, however, I'll have to concentrate on two subjects at most, and I think I'll balance the science part with some language- and culture-related subject, and either Slavistics (especially Russistics) or Orientalism (especially Sinology or Japanology) would be a good choice, I think. —Nightstallion (?) 14:14, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Requested Page Move

Thanks for concluding the Sennacherib page move vote... I take it you did so based on the "snowball" clause, quite appropriately... I would like to bring your attention to another page move vote that was never acted upon... Maybe it was oversight, but if you could do something about it and move the page I would be grateful... A vote was opened on Dec. 4 to return Table of nations to its original location at Sons of Noah... (which had been improperly moved, without any discussion, by a user who even messed with the GFDL at the old location, requiring that dummy GFDL to be deleted before it can be moved back...) There were four votes in support of the move, and the above-mentioned user abstained. The results (4-0) should have been acted on long ago... Care to help out, since it would take an admin to nuke the dummy GFDL first? Thanks... (See: Talk:Table_of_nations#Requested_move) NB: Another of this user's "tricks" was to open a second vote to move the page to "Table of Nations]] (with a capital N). No votes were cast in this one, it's purpose was only to sow confusion... The four votes in favour of the move were to return to the original title, Sons of Noah... ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 14:40, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't invoke WP:SNOWBALL on Sennacherib, it was just five days after the move had been first proposed, and therefore it was due to be closed. And I'll take a look at that other RM right now. —Nightstallion (?) 15:21, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
No, no, no! The vote was to move to Sons of Noah!!! Nobody voted for "Table of Nations"... (sigh) I guess his attempt to confuse with a duplicate vote succeeded... ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:30, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Ehm... what exactly are you getting worked up about? It's been moved to Sons of Noah... —Nightstallion (?) 15:31, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, I'm the one who's confused... Anyway, thanks...! ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:32, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article List of European Union member states, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Thanks for following the process this time ;) You may want to archive this page - it is taking lot of time. --Gurubrahma 19:43, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Normally I don't write German here unless somebody claims I am "US-centric" ;-) So I'll write in German for a change:

;) —Nightstallion (?) 19:14, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

The EU, Chad, et al. ;)

Hi there! I think we can use a cropped version of this world map, which entails some enhancements over its predecessor, including clearly delineated microstates. Or, maybe even a variant of this one (which I can cleanup for you), or similar? If that's no good, I can try to create one, but I cannot guarantee a prompt turnaround regarding this. :(

Mh... I really like the map used at Schengen Agreement, except that it's missing Morocco for my purposes... The other two are not really ideal; BlankMap-World seems to be the basis for CrudeEU27, anyway (and BTW: it's incorrectly putting Montenegro as a separate state, which is not true yet), and Europe_political_map has got a weird projection IMO. Mh. No chance for a Schengen-Agreement-map-like map including Morocco? ^_^;; —Nightstallion (?) 19:14, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the note about Serbia/Montenegro: that was the basis for that contentious WTO map, as you know, and there was much back-and-forthing; I'll fix that. And the other Europe map can be cropped too, thereby getting rid of territories that appear warped; it also (perhaps appropriately) includes Caucasian states, which (although not of issue regarding EU candidacy just yet) are arguably in both Europe and Asia.
However, I think I can morph the Schengen map/template to include Morocco but, all the same, it will unnecessarily include other African states. And how about Greenland, which has acted uniquely from Denmark? (BTW: I haven't had a chance to peruse the list intently, but at first blush it looks good; I'll get back to you.) E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 19:45, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I think it would be best if it included all countries bordering the Mediterranean as well as the caucasus states and Greenland. —Nightstallion (?) 19:52, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
OK; I'll work on it. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 20:17, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Great, thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 20:21, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Also, thanks for weighing in regarding the burgeoning Canadian election template. Things can get dicey, and (I might have acted prematurely at the onset ... meh!), but the ride is still worthwhile. :) E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 16:56, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Gladly. And good luck! (I still hope Harper won't win, but... eh.) —Nightstallion (?) 19:14, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. It seems more people support the template than are opposed to it, so (unless compelled otherwise), it will go up tomorrow. Besides: by the time it is posted, and TfDs must transpire over seven days (and if a clear consensus supports its removal upon its conclusion), the issue might be moot. Besides: though I think things might turn around, I'm not the one who needs luck. :) E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 19:45, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
I actually meant "good luck" both as regards the template as well as regards the election. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 19:53, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
I know! There are many ways to skin the cat ... and we'll see after not too long how much has been removed in both respects. ;) E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 20:17, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Yep. Apart from that — one more Liberal government would likely be the final coffin nail sealing Québéc's independence wish, which in turn would mean the Conservatives wouldn't have anyone left to govern with. grinsNightstallion (?) 20:21, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
I hope not, and I'm not so sure about that. Despite recent travails, the Liberals still have more prominence in Quebec than any other national party (and currently prevail provincially, though that support isn't necessarily transferable), and IMO recent malaise about the federal party isn't irreversible. In addition, I think a Conservative victory (the party is led by Stephen Harper, from Western Canada and succeeding the laughable Stockwell Day in a prior form of the party) might be more a harbinger of doom than anything: numerous Quebecers – including the Bloc Québécois in the federal parliament – are advocating for votes against them. Moreover, the election may yield a Conservative minority parliament, in which case we can revisit this topic in around 2 years. :) Keep your legs crossed! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 20:49, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
We'll see, I s'pose. Do you really think a troglodyte Harper minority government will hold two years if the Bloc refuses to support it, though? —Nightstallion (?) 20:56, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
That depends on the margins of victory for all parties: the NDP have indicated they might support the Conservatives in a minority situation. But nothing in politics is certain: the NDP also supported the current government but precipitated its fall when it no longer suited them. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 21:03, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
A decidedly leftist party supporting a decidedly rightist party? I don't think the NDP's voters would like that, would they? —Nightstallion (?) 21:06, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
They might not; however, one can argue that such collaboration in Parliament would provide a centrist (balanced) perspective ... particularly if seat margins allow for little else. We'll see! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 21:11, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
We'll see, indeed. Take care! —Nightstallion (?) 21:25, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for your note. I apologise for my silence and for not responding to your prior note too, but I've been swamped and my recent quiescence (as you know) wasn't by choice. I'll detail in an e-mail in the next few days.

As for PR in Canada (and I'm not against it), I'm unsure it would yield a different or more beneficial result - given the divisive nature of Parliament curently. I'm completely shocked by the seat counts ... not necessarily by the results (though I am disappointed) but because the various combinations yield near parliamentary majorities. It'll be interesting. We'll chat again once I catch up. Until then, take care! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 05:42, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, but at least it would represent people's votes more fairly; as it stands, the Green Party would deserve a few seats, but doesn't get them, while the NDP is under-represented and the Bloc over-represented, IIRC. Looking forward to chatting more with you. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 06:42, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed in featured list candidates, you said how the pastel colouring stuffed up on this version in IE. I did a bit of investigation, and found that the way ie interprets 3-figure colour codes is apparently different to firefox. For example, for Norway you had #fdd. In firefox, this comes out as a nice pastelly pinkish colour, or #f0d0d0. In IE, it comes out as #0f0d0d, black. The same happens for the other colours. The solution is just to put the full 6-figure code in, just insert 0's after each letter. I've reverted to the colours you attempted to use in the version you mentioned. Tomoe Shinhara

I'm not sure why you rejected the move of Shinohara Tomoe to Tomoe Shinohara. WP:MOS-JA says "For the title for modern figures, there is not yet an agreement on the name order. In general, use the form of a person's name that is most widely known and used by English speakers." and both her official site and the listed English fansite use "Tomoe Shinhara". Also, most of the articles in, for example Category:Japanese voice actors, use this format. Shiroi Hane 08:39, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
