Premise

[edit]

The pilot tells the story of three adopted high school sisters – Maya, Coco and Mymy – who struggle to pass their history class, as they consecutively have to present presentations of their home countries.[2]

Voice cast

[edit]
  • Robin Barten as Maya, the central protagonist of Ongezellig, an asocial girl who struggles with ADD and social anxiety. Maya is shown to be a deep introvert, trying to avoid getting herself into social situations as much as possible. She also fantasizes having friends in her spare time, something Coco and Mymy are aware of but try to hide possibly to not ruin Maya's mood.
  • Merel Does as Coco, the South African adoptive sister of Maya and Mymy. Despite originally hailing from South Africa, she was put up for adoption due to her parents dying after she moved to the Netherlands at a young age for unknown reasons. Although Coco is a helping hand to those around her, she is however, not resilient, as she copes with her being an orphan with physical violence.
  • Joyce Ter Stege as Mymy, the Japanese adoptive sister of Maya and Coco that serves as the unofficial mascot of the series and is overly patriotic about the Netherlands, hence to the point where her appearance uses colours to that of the dutch Flag[3]. She is a megalomaniac, wishing to be a "goddess with supreme power and untermenschen".
  • Kayleigh Luyks as Vera, the history teacher of the three sisters who seems to be an alcoholic.
[edit]

There are a few official Ongezellig comics, although initially made available for petje.af pledgers, they have been made public online. One comic by the name of Maya's conversation (Dutch: Maya's conversatie) follows Maya, listening to Death Grips on her way home on a bus, as she finds a boy who wants to sit next to her. After learning that the boy next to her is also a fan of the same band, Maya tries to indirectly ask him out. She then gets embarrassed, claiming that she already has a boyfriend, but she tries to defend herself in hopes of not ruining her reputation to the boy.

Another comic follows Maya on her sweet 16, where she has a dream about her celebrating her birthday at school, but she hears voices that eventually start to gossip on her. This causes Maya to wake up sweating. Her sisters try to surprise her with a birthday care, but fail, as their mom tells them that Maya is sick and that "she has no school today". Coco then subtly wishes Maya a happy birthday and bikes off of to school with Mymy.
