Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) is the first Pentecostal church present in Nigeria. It arose in the first half of the 20th century, in the then-British empire. The establishment of the Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria was traceable to the early formation of a prayer group named Precious Stone Society and later metamorphosed to "Diamond Stone" from the Church Missionary Society (CMS) now Saint Savior Anglican Church, Italupe, Ijebu-ode, Ogun State, Nigeria in 1918[1] led by Mr. Joseph Sadare (a.k.a. Esinsinade), D.O. Odubanjo, D.E. Oduga, E.O. Odukoya, and Miss Sophia Odulami but was formally established in 1941 after a split from the Apostolic Church which the original Aladura organization (Faith Tabernacle) had invited to Nigeria. Its growth was led by Joseph Ayo Babalola, a road construction driver who became its first General Evangelist.[2]

History

Sometimes in 1928, Mr. D.O. Odubanjo had a contact with Pastor A.A. Clark, the leader of Faith Tabernacle Church in Philadelphia, USA, through correspondence which resulted to the receipt of Tracts and Magazines known as "The Sword of the Spirit" which he distributed among the members of the group (Diamond Stone).

Later, tension rose between the Diamond Stone group and Saint Savior Anglican Church over the practices on divine healings, vision, opposition to infant baptism, reliance on dream, abstinence from dancing, drumming, debt owing, drinking of alcohol, gambling and mixing with non-Christians. As a result of this Mr. Joseph Sadare was compelled to give up his post in the synod while others were forced to resign their appointments and withdrew their children from the Anglican School.

Soon, Pastor Isaac Babalola Akinyele (The Olubadan of Ibadan) and Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola joined the Faith Tabernacle Church and sometime in 1930, a misunderstanding arose again within the leaders of the church which eventually called for settlement at Ilesa in 1930. At the incident, a dead child was brought and the leaders instructed Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola to pray for the dead child, and the child was subsequently brought back to life. This led to the great revival of 1930 at Oke-Ooye, Ilesa, which eventually ended the crisis among the leaders on that day. Those that assisted Apostle Babalola during the revival D.O. Babajide, J.O. Yerokun, A.O.A. Olutimehin, S.O. Akinade, J. Olu Young, J.A. Idowu, A.J. Famuyide, Elders N. Olutimehin, S. O. Afolabi, J. A. Yahaya, Pastors J.O. 'Aoko and N.E. Udofia -Ag. Secretary.

This Great Revival was also embraced by the members of the Faith Tabernacle Church with Baptism of the Holy Spirit, the spiritual manifestation of seeing visions, prophesying, speaking in tongues and dreaming dreams, while thousands of people at the scene of the revival surrendered their lives to Jesus. They also surrendered their juju and other dangerous charms.

In fact, less than a decade after, branches of the Church were established in Lagos, Ibadan, Ilesa, Akure, Oyan, Ile-Ife, Ilofa, Odo-Owa, Minna, Zaria etc.

On Thursday, 27th September, 1990, some pastors of the church (CAC) that styled themselves as Christ Initiative Forum of Christ Apostolic Church attempted to overthrow the administrative authority of the church during the Church Pastors' Conference at Christ Apostolic Church Okesa, Ilesa, Osun State, Nigeria, when they presented their address which majority of the attendees described as revolutionary. This divided the church into two faction (Supreme Council and Christ Initiative Forum) but sometimes in 1993 the name Christ Initiative Forum wound up and metamorphosed to General Executive Council that had been proscribed by the authority of the Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria since 1969.

In 1931, a disagreement arose again within the Faith Tabernacle Church, which eventually led to the creation of a new group named "Christ Apostolic Church".

On the 4th May, 1943, "The Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria" was registered under the Land (Perpetual Succession) of the Ordinance Act 1924, with certificate of incorporation No 147, while Pastors I.B. Akinyele, D.O. Odubanjo and Apostle Joseph J.A. Babalola were appointed as the General Executive Council (GEC) named as the governing council with the Articles of Incorporation (Constitution)

On the 6th January 1969, the members of the governing Council (General Executive Council) met, passed a resolution and changed the name of the governing council from General Executive Council to Supreme Council of Christ Apostolic Church that also took powers and factions from the GEC. Since then till date, this has reflected in the Articles of incorporation of the CAC as amended in 1969. The members of the governing council (GEC) on that day were: Pastor E.T. Latunde -Chairman, Pastor J.A. Madaiyese, J.B. Orogun, I.D. Degun, J.D. Sanya.

Christ Apostolic Church is an indigenous African church founded by members of Precious Stone Society (Faith Tabernacle) after separating from The Apostolic Church in 1940.[6] The church's history is linked to its founders, namely Isaac Babalola Akinyele, Joseph Ayo Babalola, David Odubanjo, Joseph Esinsinade, and Miss Sophia Odunlami.

Before then, Christ Apostolic Church and The Apostolic Church (called Diamond or Precious Stone at that time) were found in some places in Nigeria but met mainly at St Savior's Anglican Church.[7] The Anglican Church were opposed to the practices of the group and members of the group who are workers in the Anglican Church were forced to resign. When the Great Revival[2] emerged in July 1930 people rejected their traditional medicines and thousands of people gave their lives to Jesus. On 23 September 1931, Pastors D.P Williams, A. Turnbull, and W.J Williams came to Nigeria [8] and ordained the first seven Pastors of the church. Then during the crisis that occurred in 1939-1940 in the church[9] that led to the emergence of two groups, the first is The Apostolic Church Nigeria led by Pastor Samuel Adegboyega while the second is Christ Apostolic Church.[citation needed]

Baba Abiye was one of the leaders of the Christ Apostolic Church who served as the Assistant General Evangelist of the church, working closely with Joseph Ayo Babalola during his lifetime.[citation needed]
