Career

[edit]
Rae in 2021

TikTok Fame

[edit]

Addison Rae amassed 88.8 million followers on TikTok;[a] she first joined TikTok in July 2019, uploading dance videos to trending songs on the platform.[1] In just a few months, Rae gained over one million followers on TikTok and decided to leave LSU in November. "I remember that's when it changed for me," Rae told Business Insider in April 2020. "I knew I wanted to take it more seriously and expand it to other platforms. I uploaded a video to YouTube and got really active on Instagram."[2] She signed with talent agency WME in January 2020, along with her parents.[3] In that same month, Addison released a weekly podcast exclusive to Spotify with her mother called "Mama Knows Best" in July 2020 entailing topics covering their personal and career life.[4] In 2021, Rae relaunched this podcast with the new name, "That was Fun? With Addison and Sheri."[5] Addison has launched her own cosmetics line, Item Beauty, with her as the role of Chief Innovation Officer. She co-founded Item Beauty with Madeby Collective, and she oversees most of the products in the brand.[2][6]Rae also founded her own fragrance line called "Addison Rae Fragrance".

Film Career

[edit]

Rae starred in He's All That, a remake film of the 1999 teen comedy She's All That. Her role was inspired by Freddie Prinze Jr.'s character Zachary Siler from the original.[7][6] The film was released on Netflix in August 2021 and though it was the most streamed film of its week,[8] it received negative reviews from critics.[9] Courtney Howard for Variety magazine wrote that "Rae has a natural ease and charm, at her best when she's either leaning into the bubbly, comedic, satirical overtones, or performing in a heavily choreographed dance-off; however, she's a little rough around the edges and not quite a confident presence when tasked to mine emotional poignancy, especially evident in the third act."[10] On February 2, 2022, Rae announced on Instagram that she had signed to join the cast of a new movie called Fashionista, produced by Paramount, which any further details are unknown.[11] In February 2023, it was announced that Rae would be cast in Eli Roth's Thanksgiving. The movie was released with favorable reviews and critics praising Rae's growth in acting since her debut film. On May 12, 2023, Rae was also cast alongside Ryan Reynolds for a live-action hybrid movie titled Animal Friends. The movie is scheduled for a 2025 release however, more details are yet to be revealed.

Music Career

[edit]

In March 2021, Rae released her debut single, "Obsessed." It was intended to be the lead single to her coming extended play AR, a project that was temporarily shelved after Obsessed was critically panned on release. “I put out ‘Obsessed’ and, you know, people didn’t love it as much as I loved it… I started feeling a lot of self-doubt, and those big dreams that I was pursuing, I just thought, ‘Maybe I’m not good enough to do this.” She told Vogue in a 2023 interview.[12]

Around 2022, multiple songs from this unreleased EP leaked on YouTube, which Rae initially thought “could mark the death knell for her music career.”[12] However, the tracks gained traction in online fan circles, which spurred her to release her debut extended play AR on August 18, 2023. The promotional single “2 die 4” features a guest verse from Charli XCX, who would later invite Addison Rae onto A. G. Cook’s remix of her 2024 song "Von Dutch." Rae also appeared on A. G. Cook’s album 2024 album “Britpop,” singing alongside Charli XCX on the track “Lucifer.”[13]

On August 9th, 2024, Addison Rae released her major label debut single “Diet Pepsi” through Columbia Records.[14] This song earned Rae her first US Billboard Hot 100 entry, placing at 88.[15]

On September 23rd, 2024, Rae joined Troye Sivan and Charli XCX for their Sweat tour performance at Madison Square Garden, where she performed “Von dutch a. g. cook remix featuring addison rae” and “Diet Pepsi” alongside Sivan and Charli.[16]

Musical Style And Influences

[edit]

Music critics have categorized Addison Rae’s music as dance-pop, bubblegum-pop, and synth-pop. Pitchfork described AR’s “I got it bad” as a “...bedazzled turn-of-the-millennium pop song” Addison Rae’s influences include Britney Spears, Madonna, Rihanna, Barbara Striesand, Sophie, Arca, and Charli XCX.[12][17] In a conversation with Interview magazine, Rae muses on her influences, “I love a woman who does it all… I love a girl that does it all with no filter, it’s just ingrained in me.”[17]

Vogue notes that Rae has received attention from music fans online for her unexpectedly eclectic taste, artists like “FKA Twigs, Yves Tumor, and Kelela” appear on her playlists which stylistically “span recent avant-garde hip-hop to the cream of ’00s Timbaland-produced R&B.”[12]

Critical Reception

[edit]

Addison Rae's debut single "Obsessed" was critically panned. In a review for PopDust, music critic Langa stated "Addison Rae's embarrassing new single 'Obsessed' proves she should stick to lip syncing".[18]

For Billboard, Jason Lipshutz reviewed Rae's debut EP AR favorably, noting: "AR does not sound like a collection of odds and ends: instead, the five songs engross the listener with fresh melodies and bursts of personality," Lipshutz closes his review stating, "the whole project is worth bookmarking as the potential start of something big." [19] Liam Hess writing for Vogue praised "I Got It Bad" saying the song is "a bona fide pop masterpiece with a welcome dose of weirdness," continuing that it "recalls Britney at her peak, with an irresistible, swooping chorus and a juggernaut of a bridge."[12]
