Chrishantha Abeysena is a Senior Professor in Community Medicine at the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya[1]. He is a former Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine (PGIIM)[2] and a former Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM)[3], University of Colombo. Professor Abeysena has made significant contributions to medical education, public health research, and evidence-based medicine in Sri Lanka. He is widely recognized for his leadership in promoting health systems research and quality improvement.
Early Life and Education
Professor Chrishantha Abeysena had his primary and secondary education at De Mazenod College. He obtained MBBS from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo[4]. During his time as a medical student, he was deeply involved in student leadership, serving as:
- Treasurer, Secretary, and President of the Medical Students Welfare Society.
- Convener of the Medical Faculty Action Committee (1984-1987), where he led efforts to nationalize the North Colombo Medical College.
- President of the Medical Faculty Student Union and Vice President of the University Students Union (1990-1991).
He later pursued higher education, obtaining multiple advanced degrees:
- MA in Buddhist Studies (1994) from the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies[5].
- MSc in Community Medicine (1995) and MD in Community Medicine (2002) from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo[3].
- MA in International Relations (1998) from the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo[6].
- Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Statistics (2000) from the Faculty of Science, University of Jayawardenepura[7].
- BA in Christian Studies (2003) from the Pontifical Urbaniana University[8].
He completed his post-MD training at Monash University, Australia, specializing in Health Service Management, Clinical Epidemiology, and Biostatistics. He was board-certified as a specialist in Community Medicine in 2003.
Academic and Professional Career
He served in the Ministry of Health until 1996. In 1997, he joined the Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Kelaniya[4]. He has qualified as a Professor in the Department of Public Health since 2010 and became a Senior Professor in Community Medicine in 2018.
Throughout his career, he has served in various academic and administrative roles:
- Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine (PGIIM).[9]
- Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), University of Colombo.[3]
- Member of several Senate Standing Committees and the University Grants Commission[10] (2021-2024).
- Member of the Ethics Review Committees at multiple institutions.
He was the Chairperson of the Board of Study in Multidisciplinary Studies[11] at the University of Kelaniya (2017-2020) and the Chairperson of the Board of Study in Community Medicine[12] at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (2015-2017).
In 2016/2017, he served as the President of the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka[13].
Research and Publications
Professor Abeysena has contributed significantly to research in health systems, with a focus on quality improvement, non-communicable diseases, and interventional studies. He has been instrumental in promoting evidence-based medicine in Sri Lanka and was a founding member of the South Asian Cochrane Network.
He has received multiple Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for the Best Researcher in the Faculty of Medicine and the President’s Award for Scientific Publications.
