On 23 October 2024, 4 people were killed and 14 others injured in an attack at the Turkish Aerospace Industries headquarters in Kahramankazan, near Ankara, Turkey.[1][2][3] Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote on X that two suspects were "neutralized."[4]
Background
The Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) headquarters is located in Kahramankazan, near the Turkish capital of Ankara. TUSAS plays an important role in Turkish aviation and defence.[5] The company produces the KAAN, Turkey's first combat aircraft.[6]
At the time of the attack, a weapons exhibition was taking place in Istanbul, which received a visit from Ukrainian foreign minster Andrii Sybiha.[5][7]
Attack
CCTV footage at the site of the attack showed a man dressed in plainclothes carrying an assault rifle and a backpack. A woman, also carrying an assault rifle, was one of the assailants.[5][8] Television channel NTV said that the perpetrators arrived at the headquarters by taxi.[8][2] A large explosion occured during the attack at 4 p.m. local time,[3] which was followed by gunfire.[1][2]

Local
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote on X that "A terrorist attack was carried out against the Turkish Aerospace Industries... Unfortunately, we have martyrs and injured people."[9] Mansur Yavaş, the mayor of Ankara, said that he was "saddened" by the incident.[1] NATO secretary general Mark Rutte said, "Deeply concerning reports of dead and wounded in Ankara. NATO stands with our ally Turkey. We strongly condemn terrorism in all its forms and are monitoring developments closely."[2] Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç said that an investigation had been launched.[1] The European Union Turkish delegation condemned the attack.[6]
