"Disease" is a song by American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga. It was released on October 25, 2024, through Interscope Records, as the lead single from her upcoming seventh[5] studio album.

Release

Lady Gaga first spoke of new music while celebrating for her 38th birthday on March 28, 2024, saying she was "writing some of [her] best music in as long as [she] can remember" and posted another update from a recording studio in July 2024.[6] Following the release of "Die with a Smile", a collaboration with American singer Bruno Mars, on August 16, the premiere of her 2024 film Joker: Folie à Deux with Joaquin Phoenix, and just four weeks after releasing the film's companion album, Harlequin (2024), she announced the lead single for her upcoming album to be released in October.[7]

On October 18, 2024, streaming platforms updated Gaga's discography with seven different tracks from her discography to spell out the word "disease", hinting at an upcoming project.[8] Three days later, the release of the single was confirmed by her label through a pre-save website.[9] The cryptic website depicted a glitch of the phrase "I could play the doctor" against a black screen.[10] Alongside the announcement, Gaga also revealed lyrics of the song as well as the official logo.[11] Gaga shared a promotional poster along with global release dates and the exact time on her Twitter that same day.[12]

Composition

"Disease" is three minutes and 49 seconds long.[13] It is an upbeat electropop,[2] dark pop,[1] synth-pop,[3] and EDM song,[4] with gothic, industrial rock,[14] pop, rock, dance, and rage influences.[15] It features EDM and techno-heavy beats, grungy guitars and ominous layered harmonies.[16] Critics found "Disease" thematically similar to Gaga's singles "Bad Romance" (2009) and "The Cure" (2017)"[a] and was observed to be a "return to form", reminiscent of her early work.[3]

Critical reception

Robin Murray from Clash felt that Gaga was "a chaotic cure in bleakness of a pop-pandemic world" and rated the song 9 out of 10.[19] Roisin O'Connor from The Independent rated it 4 out of 5.[16] India Block from Evening Standard rated the song 5 out of 5, writing that the song has got "wicked case of the earworms, burrowing their way into your brain after just one listen".[20] Alexa Camp from Slant Magazine praised "Disease" and felt the song is stylistically reminiscent of the music in Gaga's albums The Fame Monster (2009) and Born This Way (2011). She noted that "the song's lyrics rely heavily on cliché, [...] though, the track's dungeon-deep production proves satisfying enough to withstand even a line like 'I can smell your sickness'".[4] Alexis Petridis from The Guardian rated the song 4 out of 5 and noted that “after a run of power ballads and jazz standards, [...] this synthpop single is a reminder of the Gaga of old, while still fitting into today’s Brat era.”[21]

In a postive review, Bianca Betancourt from Harper's Bazaar noted that "Disease" was “classic Gaga in the best way possible, marrying elements of pop, rock, dance and rage with the star's signature lyrical ear-worms.”[22]

Authors from Consequence (publication) noted that “Disease” was “a dark, pulsing, desperate pop track that feels like a return to form after years of Gaga expanding her performance repertoire.”[23]

Plugged In (publication) felt Lady Gaga believed that she had the ability to rescue and heal an emotionally broken lover, but criticised the lyrics.[24]
