Edit request from 188.220.245.148, 30 August 2011

Hi, Jeff Goldblum also starred in the Faerie Tale Theater episode The Three Little Pigs as the Big Bad Wolf. This is not mentioned and I think it should be added to his filmography. Please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Faerie_Tale_Theatre_episodes Season 4 Episode 401 aired February 12, 1985 You can watch him here if you want to see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqQSzUdH2vY&feature=related

I hope that is helpful.

Thank you, Ayda 188.220.245.148 (talk) 22:37, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Concerning grammar: "His family was Jewish, and had immigrated from Russia and Austria to the U.S." should read: "His family was Jewish, and had immigrated to the U.S. from Russia and Austria." or: "His family was Jewish, and had emigrated from Russia and Austria to the U.S." 74.88.129.46 (talk) 00:09, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Goldblum appeared in Season Five of Portlandia, which would make him a recurring character from 2012-2015, not from 2012-2014 which is stated in his Filmography.

Jeff Goldblum Falls to death in New Zealand

The report is true.

October 22, 1952 - June 26, 2009(New Zealand) next day.

Jeff has died suffering from his injuries from a fall on set in New Zealand

Untrue! New Zealand police have addressed this rumour via their Live Updates on police.govt.nz. They do not specify a name but deny any incident taking place. I believe the URL is http://www.police.govt.nz/news/updates/update.html?id=8608 although the site is hard to access due to high traffic. Ok, let's use some general logic here for a second. Jeff Goldblum is filming with Harrison Ford (the other subject of whatever sick joke someone decided to start) for Morning Glory. It's filming in the USA. Specifically, they're filming in New York. Jeff Goldblum was just on Jimmy Fallon a few days ago further establishing this. Now if Jeff Goldblum is in New York (reportedly), how can he have died on the complete other side of the Earth? ⒺⓋⒾⓁⒼⓄⒽⒶⓃ talk 00:11, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

People! Critical thinking, PLEASE!

So far both sides of the story are reporting the same words nearly verbatim. And the trick of the present is that someone can rewrite the past if not everybody knows about it. So until we see Jeff give a press conference let's please have some critical thinking. Certain people, for attention whoring purposes, have an incentive to be a-holes. The fact is we really don't know anything yet until we see Jeff or Jeff says something himself (or his friends say something in an unmistakable way). Solid evidence. --ThePenciler (talk) 02:29, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

What do you mean "we don't know anything"? We do. The Police at Kerikeri have not attended any accidents in their district which includes Kauri Cliffs where the incident was reported to have happened. So yes we do know that the guts of the hoax is untrue. Kaiwhakahaere (talk) 02:59, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Ah, ok. I didn't know that article existed (in all truthfulness the date on it IS 2:37PM Friday Jun 26, 2009). Ok, so there you go. I'll still hold out conclusion (as hoaxes have a way of turning in on themselves). It'll be interesting how this will turn out. BTW, what's with your user page? People accusing you of things? What's up? Is that a case of people reverse stalking or something? [Update] Just for the record I'm leaning strongly towards hoax of course. "We don't know anything" was the wrong thing to say, but all I'm calling for is for people to use critical thinking instead of believing everything they hear on the internet. --ThePenciler (talk) 03:15, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Evidence, circumstantial or otherwise.

  • He's in New York at the moment, shooting a movie with Harrison Ford. New York, as you might have heard, is on the other side of the globe from NZ.
  • Harrison Ford, who is equally alive, has also had "news" reporting his death, having to do with a French cruise.
  • Both of these reports can be found verbatim on the website http://www.fakeawish.com/ , which has been active since 2008.
  • In fact, the report of Jeff Goldblum's death is absolutely identical to a report of Tom Cruise's death last year. Reportedly, Cruise fell off of a cliff in New Zealand. Wow, what a coincidence!
  • Most major news networks of the world have not mentioned the accident's occurrence.
  • The Kerikeri police force deny any accidents at Kauri Cliffs, involving celebrities or other wise.
  • The site proclaiming the news has a disclaimer at the bottom, stating that "any reference to specific individuals has been 100% fabricated by web site visitors who have created fake stories by entering a name into a blank 'non-specific' template for the purpose of entertainment."

...but I've been told I have a tendency towards rudeness. I call it 'honesty' myself, but I digress.

'I done read it on the Interweb so it must be true!'

This is what, to a good portion of you, counts as 'verifiable'.

Think about this. HalfShadow 03:27, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Um, I think you are being a little out of line here. A handful of anonymous IPs jumped onboard with "news" of the hoax (as ALWAYS happens in these cases), but these were unilaterally shot down by the registered editors who dismissed it as unverified. Later on three registered editors made hoax related changes, all of which were rolled back in less than a minute. Interestingly in this case, a great deal of people (including myself) first heard about it from a national television network in Australia, so they have a somewhat defensible reason for initially believing the hoax. (Why the national news network proceeded to broadcast the story without verifying is a separate issue). Of course there is no valid reason for adding anything to Wikipedia without reliable evidence. Manning (talk) 03:33, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Sadly even some mainstream non-internet media fell for it. The report appeared in at least one newspaper and in a popular morning TV program in Australia. Orderinchaos 07:53, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, you'd think they would eventually learn, but no. It's the second time the gullible Sydney Channel Nine guy as been sucked in by a hoax. Read this. Makes you wonder about the intelligence of media people too, not just the woo woos here.Kaiwhakahaere (talk) 08:02, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
I'd say it's desperation of one news show to scoop the others. That desperation might come from how well or bad they're doing in the ratings. Desperation makes you do stupid things. Like believe at face value everything you hear in the fear or hope that what you hear might be the next big story. Unprofessional at best. Dangerous at worst. I wonder how well that Australian news show is doing in the ratings. Or if the reporter is a respected one or not.--ThePenciler (talk) 08:18, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
I'd like to know whether he still has a job. Was sucked in by two hoaxes, so definitely earned the boot. Still, media outlets these days don't worry too much about facts, so maybe he's sure to be promoted. Kaiwhakahaere (talk) 08:29, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Wilkins is reasonably respected, and the Today and Sunrise programs rival each other in the ratings and between them lead the breakfast timeslot. That being said, the commercial stations don't generally set a high bar for news and current affairs in Australia - that tends to be done by our national broadcaster, the ABC. Orderinchaos 16:16, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Jeff Goldblum is in Los Angeles, NOT New York

There is an article on the New York Daily News' Web site about the rumored deaths of both Goldblum and Ford. His publicist says in the article "he is fine and in Los Angeles." Just a few citations are needed and we're good to go. I fail to see why this should not be mentioned.SigKauffman (talk) 16:29, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Not even a citation is needed. At the least, what is needed is nothing. It was obviously someones idea of a sick joke in poor taste, especially considering that 3 celebrities have already passed this week and they sought to further embroil the news with a hoax of Harrison Ford and Jeff Goldblum. There is no need to give that much power to someone with a twisted ideology. Far as I'm concerned, it needs no mention. Any such mention will be immediately reverted without discourse. Read up, the consensus is a resounding "No". ⒺⓋⒾⓁⒼⓄⒽⒶⓃ talk 18:03, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

-- On 6-25-09 he was at many points 2nd only to Michael Jackson throughout the day in the trending topics on Twitter, many times exceeding the talk over Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcet and the Iranian election fallout due to this rumor. It was at least reported on briefly by Fox News. It was such a widespread rumor that it actually drew Kevin Spacey out via Twitter to try to dispell the rumor after having contacted Goldblum's manger to verify. And though they may have planned to continue the running joke involving Goldblum on the Colbert Report, the 6-29 appearance also obviously served to officially dispell the rumor by him making a television appearance. AND he and Colbert took the opportunity to make the rumor into a comedy bit. As rumors of celebrity death go, I believe this one is at least worth mentioning. Even if only in short form. 1938superman (talk) 19:18, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

This project works by consensus which is for non inclusion. --Tom (talk) 19:26, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Maybe a separate article should be started on celebrity death hoaxes, set the bar for inclusion there that if a major news media organization mis-reports a death hoax as an actual hoax, it should be included. Wikipedia is about information, I think, and dismissing significant 'wildfire' rumors/hoaxes I think is of value.

These days, people flock to wikipedia as much as the news if they hear that a celebrity has died, and to its credit I tend to find Wikipedia far more reliable than any one news agency. --Chibiabos (talk) 19:53, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Both of the above are under way. An article (still very rudimentary) exists at Celebrity death hoax. Acknowledging the media aspect is important (not yet done however). Furthermore as a result of the consensus that emerged from this (and also the Rick Astley) debate, I have started a draft policy document on how to handle death hoaxes at User:Manning Bartlett/Wikipedia:Deathhoax policy draft. Manning (talk) 23:45, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Death hoax

Two observations to make:

1 - There is absolutely no reason for this article to EVER discuss the hoax about his death. It is irrelevant as far as this actor is concerned.

2 - There *may* (and I stress *may*) come a time when a "Death of Jeff Goldblum hoax" article is warranted. If (and only "if") there is considerable fallout from the fact that a number of media agencies (including Channel 9, one of Australia's major national networks) reported this as "News", then the public discussion about "Verification responsibility of the media" may constitute a notable event in its own right. However, only time will tell.

Until there is evidence to justify (2), then we ignore this irrelevancy. Manning (talk) 03:26, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

The article about internet memes might be a good place to put a one sentence mention about it and no more than that if at all. Or is there a separate article on internet hoaxes? [Update] Maybe this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hoaxes --ThePenciler (talk) 03:53, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Death hoaxes/rumors can become a notable part of an actor's biography, e.g. Abe_Vigoda#False_reports_of_his_death. I'm not saying that's the case here, but we shouldn't automatically dismiss it... anything can be a notable part of someone's biography if the press and/or pop culture runs with it long enough. --Chiliad22 (talk) 12:42, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I agree with Chilidad22 here. CNN has reported it in an article about Michael Jackson, and Jeff Goldblum has rated very high in internet searches. I think that this could be something notable about the actor. Jcsavestheday (talk) 19:54, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

There needs to be a reliable source that says, effectively: "On the same day as the deaths of celebrities Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, a rumor regarding the death of Jeff Goldblum also circulated. These were proven to be false." This might or might not be in connection with the supposed "death rule of 3". We can't just use the knowledge that of the hoax city and what we personally observed to add this part in. --MASEM (t) 19:59, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

There are sources out there that discuss the hoax...

And disinformation spreads as quickly as truth on Twitter. A fake news article saying Jackson had died of a drug overdose circulated on Twitter. False rumours that Jeff Goldblum and Harrison Ford both died while filming in New Zealand are still making the rounds. An Australian entertainment TV reporter when to air with the "news" of Goldblum's death. (It turns out the same cliff that had "claimed" Goldblum's life was also responsible for the earlier "deaths" of Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise. See Snopes.com for the full history of this internet-spread cut-and-paste obit.)

as for the rule of three here is a source that uses that as the headline and briefly mentions Goldblum [3]

I disagree with the original suggestion; this was an event which gave media publicity to the subject, both in terms of the initial hoax (Channel 9 in Australia, Daily Mail in Britain), and in the response to it (a Channel 4 TV programme and Private Eye magazine in Britain). These are all major national outlets, and are just the ones I have so far encountered, so it is clearly notable. Obviously it is an isolated incident, so there is no need for a lengthy discussion on it on this page, but it should earn a one-sentence mention, probably in the "personal life" section. The article misleading labels Goldblum's part in the film "Into the Night" a "supporting" role. In fact, he was the lead, supported by Michelle Pfeiffer. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089346/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.248.171.227 (talk) 13:26, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Jeff Goldblum Is Watching You Poop

There was a website created in about 2002 called Jeff Goldblum Is Watching You Poop. This website was created for the purpose of printing off posters of the websites creator design and hanging the posters of Jeff Goldblum inside bathroom stalls. On the poster there is a photo of Jeff Goldblum and underneath the photo there is a caption that says, "Jeff Goldblum is watching you poop." After, printing the poster you were then supposed to email pictures of the hung poster to the creator. The website creator's email address can be found on the website.

The hanging of the poster inside bathroom stalls is supposed to be humorus and entertaining to the pooper, the person that hung the poster and to the website creator. The website was supposed to be a internet cultural phenomanon but never really took off.

Answer; You are plainly an idiot. Your knowledge of European ethnic-groups and history is clearly unsurpassed. My thoughts are that he is likely from the same Roma-clan as that other well known Gypsy Mel Brooks, and also possibly 4 out of 5 of the Marx brothers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.215.145.209 (talk)

Do not use personal attacks. Also, Mel Brooks and all 5 Marx Brothers are/were Jewish, not Roma/Gypsy. As for the original question, Jeff Goldblum is of Jewish ancestry according to this article. Jews, like Europeans, have diverse appearances. -kotra 00:28, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Jews, as previously pointed out are diverese in physical characteristics. This is because there is no Jewish "race": except in the minds of some traditions of anti Semities like the NAZIS. There are Chinese Jews, European Jews, Iranian Jews, Arab Jews, Indian Jews and African Jews. Judaism, first and foremost,is a religion of multiple sects and disciplines ranging from highly assimilationist reform Judaism to the most ultra orthodox practitioners. Within each commonly divided sect are multiple sub practices. For instance, thare are at least 10 common strains of Orthodoxy. Jews also reprsent a series of cultures. Additionaly, there are several Jewish communities that are so distinguished from the people among whom they lives that they form ethnicities. In contradiction to those that attempt to group people by physical values, even the most blonde blue eyed European (ashkenazic) Jew usually shares far more genetically in common with native Arab residents of Palestine, Kurds and Lebanese with proven pre Islamic family roots than they share with the light skinned Europeans among who they live or lived. As to nationality, Jews are not a nationality but Israel is. Israel is a collection of commonly linked ethnicities with a langauge and an army and is hence a "nation" in the most common defintion. It is not a valid scientific exercise to try to "race group" racial traits. (GHH) —Preceding unsigned

Being Jewish is not a race, it's an ethnic group as well as a religion (Judaism). There's no "Jewish features," as you can be a blond-haired, brown-eyed, 6'3" tall Jewish guy or even an African Jew. I'm not really sure when the "Jewish race" thing came in, and I'm not really sure how someone would see another person as a gypsy... whatever that really is. 98.198.83.12 (talk) 00:15, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

The death hoax thing

Now that several years have passed since the primary hoax of note in 2009, and Goldblum himself specifically addressed the issue on an episode of the The Colbert Report, is there any specific policy reason this shouldn't be briefly addressed in the article? Discussion involving change to article introduction

Hello. I would like to discuss regarding an addition that could be made to the article. I was requested by an editor (@ToThAc:) to add information to this article in order to conform with a redirect request. The redirect in question is The Goldblum and my addition to the article goes in the first sentence of the intro and would look like this:

The addition to the sentence was this: , also known as The Goldblum,

The reason I discuss this here is because I originally made this edit earlier, but had it reverted by a user named @Ooooooh!:. I was notified of this change by ToThAc. As I want to avoid an edit war, I was suggested to discuss this edit here. Do you think this edit is good for the article? Here are some sources that confirm the use of "The Goldblum": [5][6][7][8][9]

Thank you for your assistance. Paquito590 (talk) 02:17, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

I think the redirect stands on WP:RPURPOSE Less specific forms of names, for which the article subject is still the primary topic.; as it is a minor variation on his name, it is optional to mention the nickname on the article itself, since it is a sufficiently obvious variation to sustain a redirect without needing mention. If needed, a section can be added on the Internet's obsession with Jeff Goldblum,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] that lead to the nickname "The Goldblum". -- 70.51.203.56 (talk) 04:21, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
I didn't realise the "also known as" had been so recently added. But I removed it because it struck me as highly unencyclopaedic, and inaccurate. MOS:NICKNAME says the following: "Nicknames and other aliases included must be frequently used by reliable sources in reference to the subject. For example, a sports journalist's one-off reference to a player as "the Atlanta panther" in purple prose does not constitute a nickname, and treating it as one is original research. Highlighting uncommon or disputed appellations in the lead section gives them undue weight, and may also be a more general neutrality problem if the phrase is laudatory or critical. As I said in the edit summary, "sometimes referred to as" doesn't mean the same thing as "also known as". A google search for "Jeff Goldblum" returns 294,000 results; a search for "The Goldblum" returns just over 9,000. So it is not "frequently used by reliable sources".
I also don't see the necessity of the redirect, for much the same reasons, but its existence is basically irrelevant, as nothing links to it. Ooooooh! (talk) 11:40, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
In that case, I think leaving the article as is will be fine. The redirect can stay as well. Paquito590 (talk) 20:02, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

Calling Jeff Goldblum a musician in the lead sentence

As is made clear by the source that purported to support this addition, Goldblum is known as an actor as is nearly unknown as a musician. The source refers to him an actor (e.g. "The actor, now 61 years old", "watching Goldblum ... have embraced the actor") and the headline makes clear that most people don't know that he regularly plays in a Jazz band. Hence, he should be referred to as "actor", as he is commonly referred to as such by reliable sources. LK (talk) 10:35, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

The IPA pronunciation here is /ˈɡoʊldblʌm/. The character ʌ has "strut" as an example word at the IPA key so it's saying "-blum" rhymes with "plum." But Goldblum rhymes it with "zoom." It's easy enough to find this; he says it several times in this video. That video's use as a reliable source depends on your interpretation of the word "interpretation" (heh, sorry) at WP:PRIMARY. Goldblum doesn't explicitly say "my name is pronounced" but he uses the "oo" pronunciation at least 20 times. It makes sense that the subject's preference is the most accurate pronunciation since if we have an accurate but non-preferred version here and a reader uses that in the real world, they'd be saying it wrong. (Imagine, back when Brett Favre was playing, a football announcer doing an entire game saying his last name right.) 108.73.104.136 (talk) 17:50, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
