First "Classic"?

[edit]

Would this game not be the originator of HBCU "Classic" football games? 2600:1004:B16D:C243:E4AC:3758:1A73:94CB (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 04:56, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently not, my friend from Montgomery reminds me that the Turkey Day Classic between Alabama State and Alabama A&M beat it by a year! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1004:B16D:C243:E4AC:3758:1A73:94CB (talk) 05:16, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

1977 game

[edit]

@Ejgreen77: and @Broadmoor: you two seem pretty knowledgable about this event. The 1977 edition of this Classic, as specified in its article, was an early September game between Prairie View A&M and a non-HBCU team, East Texas State. It served as the season-opener for both teams and was held several weeks before the '77 state fair opened. Can either of you clarify why that game was designated as the Classic game, or is it even possible that this game was added to the list in error? The then-usual opponents PVAMU and Bishop are known to have played in Dallas during the final weekend of the fair, so it would seem like that game could be a better option for the Classic game.

Okay, it has been two months since I wrote the above inquiry, but neither of you have responded. This article's listing of games is not sourced, but I can find no other all-encompassing listing of State Fair Classic games anywhere else (on the Internet or otherwise), so I can only assume that this list must have been generated by piecing it together, game-by-game. As such, I am going under the further assumption that the 1977 East Texas State game was added in err because whoever made this list failed to notice that just because PVAMU happened to play that game in the same city as the SFC is held, it doesn't mean that it was actually the SFC game itself. Therefore, I will replace that September ETSU game with the Bishop game that was played in Dallas in October during the fair. For what it's worth, I also noticed a few other errors concerning the venues and will adjust those accordingly as well, complete with reference citations. By copy of this message, I am also notifying @Cbl62: and @Jweiss11: that I am doing this and have confidence that they will revert my edits should I have acted in haste with these updates.

Theduder3210, I think you're probably right about the East Texas State game being an error. This goes back Ejgreen77's edit from December 20, 2013 (https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=State_Fair_Classic&diff=587045305&oldid=572949829). I'm not finding much about the "State Fair Classic" in Texas in 1977 on newspapers.com. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:57, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
