Miss Vietnam (Vietnamese: Hoa hậu Việt Nam)^[1] is a beauty contest in Vietnam that has been held biennially since 1988, the oldest and most prestigious national beauty pageant of Vietnam. The contest is organized by Tiền Phong – a Vietnamese daily newspaper published by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the youth wing of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The current Miss Vietnam titleholder is Huỳnh Thị Thanh Thủy from Da Nang, who was crowned on December 23, 2022 in Ho Chi Minh City.

History

Miss Vietnam is the biggest beauty pageant and the first nationwide beauty contest after the unification of Vietnam. Before that, there was also a South Vietnamese Saigon-based beauty contest named Miss Vietnam 1955 Công Thị Nghĩa became the first titleholder of the contest as well as the first national beauty pageant titleholder in Vietnamese history.^[2] In 1965, Miss Vietnam 1965 was held with the coronation of Thái Kim Hương.^[3] The after-unification contest Miss Vietnam was initiated and organized by Tien Phong newspaper, called "Miss Tiền Phong Newspaper", starting from 1988 and is held every two years. The first person to hold the title is Bùi Bích Phương.^[4] The contest was officially renamed as "Miss Vietnam" in 2002.

During the period from 1988 to 2000, beauty queens did not participate in international beauty contests.^[5] In 2002, they were sent to participate in Miss World.^[6] However, from 2008 to 2014, due to many issues surrounding the beauty queens, they could not attend Miss World.^[7] From 2016 to 2020, they continued to participate in Miss World.^[8] Until 2022, Miss Vietnam will attend Miss International.^[9]

Miss Vietnam at international pageants

Vietnam has been represented in the Big Four international beauty pageants, the four major international beauty pageants for women.^[11]^[12] These are Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International, and Miss Earth.^[13]^[14]^[15]

^ Due to some bad reputation before, Ky Duyen was not allowed to attend Miss World 2014, instead Nguyen Thi Loan was chosen.
