Mac Sarbah

MacLean Sarbah  MA, MPhil, MDes,  is a Ghanaian philanthropist, Social Innovator and Entrepreneur. He was born and raised in Yeji, a rural town in Ghana’s Brong Ahafo region[1] to immigrant parents from Mepe, Battor North Tongu in the Volta region[2]. He is currently the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Leader and Project Manager within the Global Health Office of the President at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation[3]

Early life and education

MacLean Sarbah, popularly known as Mac, is one of eight children who grew up without a mother figure in a small farming community which lacked basic amenities. His father was a strict person who disciplined Mac and his siblings to study hard and be responsible .[4] He had to walk 3 miles to Lake Volta which was their source of water for drinking and bathing.

His father watches him to study for several hours during the day and in the night by using kerosene lanterns.[5] His father had a critical stroke which made him move from Yeji for treatment elsewhere. As a result he went to an under-resourced school, walked long distances every day, worked to save money, bought his own books, and studied hard.[6].

He had his early education and Junior high in Yeji before moving to Adidome, a small farming town, to attend the Volta Region's Adidome Day Senior Secondary School [7]. After passing his final Secondary exams, he got admission to study at the University of Ghana in 2002 and graduated with a first class honors in Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences. In 2010, he started his Master’s degree in Arts Social-Organizational Psychology at Columbia University. He graduated in 2012, also earning an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Cooperation and Conflict Resolution. In the same year, he was accepted into the University of Cambridge's Master of Philosophy in Innovation, Strategy, and Organization program, graduating in 2013.[8]

In 2017, Mac pursued another Master's degree in Risk and Resilience at Harvard University and completed in 2019[9]

Career

Mac Sarbah is a Ghanaian diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) advocate and social innovator. He obtains a Bachelor of Art in the University of Ghana. He also graduated from Harvard, Columbia and Cambridge University in May 2019.

He currently serves as a Senior DEI Project Manager at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Health Office of the President.

Before his current role, Sarbah founded and led EdAcme, an initiative focused on creating equitable access to higher education and career opportunities for underrepresented communities. With a strong international presence and recognition, Sarbah has been featured in numerous media outlets and has spoken at global events.

Foundations

Mac Sarbah Founded EdAcme, a foundation that helps young people achieve their entrepreneurship and educational talents[10][11][12][13]. He is also President of Sarbah Foundation[14][15] a newly formed foundation to help contribute to education, entrepreneurship, and social impact in Ghana and the African continent. During His stay at Mepe, He helps raise funds for an internet facility for students in Mepe as a means of charity.

Personal life and family

Mac is among eight children who ware born to their father, John Kwame Mensah Sarbah[16], and was raised in Yeji a rural town in Ghana’s Brong Ahafo region, to immigrant parents from Mepe-Battor, Tongu in the Volta region[17]. Mac volunteered as a middle school and high school teacher at Mepe, a town where his parents were born. He was abandoned by his mother when he was less than two years old but his father, who has no formal education and who was a disciplinarian guide and shaped him academically in the early years[18]

Awards and recognition

Early in his academic career, Sarbah was awarded the Best Student Award in North Tongu District, Ghana[19].

In 2019, Harvard University and Columbia University recognized Sarbah as an inspiring alumnus for his social impact and entrepreneurship efforts in Ghana and beyond.

During his time at the University of Ghana, he received an academic excellence award in his second year of study, exemplifying his dedication and hard work amid numerous challenges[20]
