2024 Women's Premier Cup

Hey, the draft that I created for the 2024 Women's Premier Cup was reviewed a week back, but it wasn't moved to mainspace by the reviewer. What to do about this situation, since the tournament is gonna start in a month? Cric editor (talk) 13:46, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cric editor Did you get any feedback from review? I can move it to the mainspace if nobody has suggested any problems. Might be very slightly early
given the lack of good sources confirming the event or groups, so I will leave it a few more days and look again later this week (unless you could add some more info and sources). Bs1jac (talk) 13:58, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No feedback at all just a notification about the review being completed. I even tried asking the reviewer about it, no reply yet :| Cric editor (talk) 14:02, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. We often don't create pages until a few days before an event starts, depending on the coverage. Surprised there isn't more in the mainstream media yet as it is an ACC event. But yeah, I'll look again in the week. Bs1jac (talk) 19:07, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cric editor According to Czarsportz, the fixtures are now out. If you have time to add those to the page it would help make it more publishable. Bs1jac (talk) 08:49, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ohk, thanks for informing. Will be adding it now Cric editor (talk) 11:38, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Improved workflow for cricket result edits

Hi, given you do quite a large proportion of the work for adding the results of cricket matches to the project, I'd like to have a discussion with you about the workflow for this, particularly in relation to ways that we can make the process a lot easier and remove some of the workload you have. Would you be willing to be contacted via a chat application (Discord/Telegram/IRC/etc.) to make that discussion a bit easier? SellymeTalk 03:26, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sellyme Hi. I don't currently use any of those apps. I enjoy creating pages for notable tournaments and then adding in squads and results when I see them, as well as attempting to moderate some of the content added by others. Interested to know what kind of thing you are proposing. Bs1jac (talk) 07:12, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ps, most often for associate member nations of the ICC, while leaving most full member events to others. Bs1jac (talk) 07:13, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a bit unfortunate. The reason I asked is because I've developed some tools in Python that automatically format scorecard parameters, auto-generate batting/bowling figures to avoid typos, and keep track of any discrepancies between player names on Cricinfo and their Wikipedia articles so disambiguations can be handled automatically without having to manually check. The problem is that the tool isn't very user-friendly (particularly for anyone who has minimal experience with Python) and probably has a lot of errors or missing features with edge case scenarios (e.g., it probably doesn't work at all for forfeited matches or very old scorecards that might not follow modern formats), so I wanted to see if you were interested in using it as a test to get it exposed to a much larger number of matches, and use that feedback to work on making it more functional and accessible to other editors. But even if you're interested, that's probably going to be rather difficult to do without a more live form of communication with the tool in its current state. SellymeTalk 07:36, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sellyme Do you mean something that would automatically apply to, and amend, all existing cards (which could be problematic), or something that editors could run on a particular page to fill in cards? For previously filled cards, there are sometimes errors or partial info in Cricinfo for Associates. e.g. Names where the middle name has been included as part of the short name, double-barrelled surnanmes missing, players with initials only (when editors have added the full first name from other sources), players where the short form name has been corrected but the page title has not, etc. Definitely interested if it can be applied to templates on specific pages, and can be 'overridden' in cases of errors. Bs1jac (talk) 11:01, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely nothing that automatically overwrites stuff, it's very much a process that requires manual oversight. My general process with it is to auto-generate the scorecard by entering the cricinfo match ID, paste it into the article and preview it, and then double-check that all of the links match up. Often many of them will not (most commonly the auto-generated link goes to a disambiguation page, or for smaller events the player does not have and does not necessitate an article), and I add these to the tool's configuration as I manually fix them. This process can take about 60 seconds per scorecard if many players require correction. But the great part of the tool is that once you've done that for any given player once, you never have to do it again. This is extremely useful for long-running domestic tournaments where it might take up to a minute per scorecard for the first two or three rounds, but then by the end of the season you can generate an entire round of scorecards in under 10 seconds since no more manual corrections are needed.
With regards to previously-filled cards, there's no "in-place" correction unfortunately, since that would require a much more complex interface that actually directly engages with Wikipedia rather than being a standalone tool. In theory it's possible, but realistically I've found that just over-writing the entire scorecard and doing any fixes/re-entering any details from the original one that should persist is still fairly painless and often worthwhile anyway, especially since it can catch errors that aren't too obvious to humans (such as a batting/bowling performance being listed that wasn't actually the best performance that innings). I've gone through a few pages similar to what you're describing and just rebuilt all of the scorecards, and while it's not really what the tool was designed for, it definitely does make that process a lot easier than having to do it entirely manually.
Currently it creates and fills the following fields automatically:
  • Match type (single vs two-innings)
  • Match name with anchor links (disabled by default, but can be configured on for tournaments where this is desired)
  • Date and time. For multi-day matches, prints a date range, correctly spanning across different months or years if needed. Scheduled days that were not needed due to an early result will not be included in the range.
  • Day/Night status if applicable (leaves parameter out if Day)
  • Team names (team batting first as team1). Attempts to guess the team's wikilink if it doesn't find a manual override in configuration.
  • Each innings score. Uses Australian format of w/rrr if the match was held in Australia, rrr/w otherwise. Also notes follow-on and declaration where applicable.
  • Leading scorer of each innings, with ties broken by strike rate. If multiple batters have exactly the same runs and balls faced, all are listed separated by line breaks. Also notes Not outs where applicable.
  • Leading wicket-taker of each innings, with ties broken by average, and ties on average broken by strike rate. If multiple bowlers have exactly the same wickets taken, runs conceded, and overs bowled, all are listed separated by line breaks.
  • Match result. Currently covers wins, ties, draws, no result, and abandoned matches. Wins can be either by runs, wickets, an innings and runs, default, or walkover. Also prints specific rain rules for DLS or VJD systems, otherwise if target was rain-affected and the target was adjusted with an unknown system, appends " (revised target)" to result parameter.
  • Venue, automatically wikilinked
  • Umpires, automatically wikilinked (although many should not be and have to be added to an exclusion list, not sure if I can improve this)
  • Player of the Match, with team name
  • Toss winners, and their choice to bat/field.
  • Empty notes field, can be automatically filled with the points earned for each team in the tournament (useful for domestic competitions with bonus point systems).
There's some stuff that has to be done manually still - rain information (overs/days lost) is left as an empty parameter, super overs don't display at all (probably easy to add), and also notes about player debuts or maiden centuries/fifers need manual adding (this one I might be able to add, but it'd be tricky). But for the most part it speeds the most common and repetitive tasks up dramatically. SellymeTalk 11:58, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sellyme Sounds good for, as you say, domestic tournaments that have multiple games per round. I used to do some of these for things like FC in Sri Lanka or Afghanistan and they take.ages. For smaller intetnational events that are often updated almost 'live', probably less so. Overall I would have no issues if this can be used to help fill new pages. Less so for retrofitting already carfeully collated pages.
When you say there is no "in place correction", do you mean that nothing can entered without using the tool, e.g., debuts, century info, rain, etc? Or just the parts generated by the tool? Need to be careful of 'locking out' editors who want to help add info, but who do not have the ability to use bespoke tools. Bs1jac (talk) 13:50, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Big mistake, player missing

Hope you're doing well these days. This caught my eye recently, and it appears to be a huge goof on ESPNcricinfo's part if true (the Ayesha Akhter part). Could you pass this on to them anytime? Might take quite some time though if it is to be fixed... মাশ্‌ফী※Mashfi (ETP) 09:20, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thanks, I'll try to look into it later today. Bs1jac (talk) 09:27, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This appears to have been fixed. Thanks again for your help. মাশ্‌ফী※Mashfi (ETP) 12:43, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah brilliant. I got confused with this as well! Bs1jac (talk) 13:45, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

About Canada vs Nepal A

Hey @Bs1jac after ODI series canada will stay here and will play matches with Nepal A side just wanna ask you should we make another article about or add in the existing Canadian cricket team in Nepal in 2023–24 article let me know thank you. Godknowme1 (talk) 11:44, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Godknowme1! I wouldn't think an A team series would pass notability criteria, but you could definitely add a section to the existing article (at the bottom). Bs1jac (talk) 12:13, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Godknowme1 (talk) 15:57, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cricket statistics

Re. Your edit to List of Test cricket records.

Please do not update cricket statistics mid-match, as this can create a false impression and lead to inaccuracies. Wikipedia does not, like Cricinfo, offer a live reporting service!!

Thanks.

(Edwin of Northumbria (talk) 01:05, 17 February 2024 (UTC))[reply]

@Edwin of Northumbria Please advice what edit you are referring to? I have been working on cricket related content for years, often running a battle against editors who update stats mid match. My last edit on the Test records page was adding the NZ-SA result to the results sumamry table. Bs1jac (talk) 07:20, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, please accept my apologies. I meant to send the message to another editor, regarding an edit on a different page. I was jumping between those I had open on my small mobile screen and clicked on the link to your talk page in error. As you say, the updating of statistics mid-match is an ongoing problem, as I keep an eye on several pages and frequently have to deal with the issue. It's nice to know I'm not the only person who gets frustrated by this!!
Best wishes,
(Edwin of Northumbria (talk) 07:45, 17 February 2024 (UTC))[reply]
@Edwin of Northumbria No worries, that's what I assumed. Bs1jac (talk) 07:46, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

T20 fifers

Hi Bs1jac, I'm looking for someone to pls help me! Tomorrow's (Monday 26 February) main page's Today's Featured List is List of five-wicket hauls in Twenty20 International cricket. The FLC nominator, User:Vensatry, has not edited since 7 February (and has not edited the list since 2019) so I looked at article history and saw your name and that you have been editing recently.

The main page blurb for tomorrow talks of 133 T20 fifer hauls. The List currently has 137 entries.

The latest entries have errors eg centred and bold bowler names, typo "Hong kong", missing flags, and typed numbers in square brackets as pseudo refs, etc.

Are you able to tweak the list? I am fine with getting the blurb fixed but not confident enough to fix the table. If you aren't happy/able to do tweaks, please let me know and I'll add my plea to WikiProject Cricket discussion page. Thanks for considering, JennyOz (talk) 09:12, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a look... Bs1jac (talk) 09:14, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Table has been fixed. Looks like someone got a bit lazy with the latest entries. Bs1jac (talk) 09:29, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for all those fixes. I've asked for tweaks at Errors. I hope I got what was needed all correct and clearly explained. I very much appreciate your help. JennyOz (talk) 12:19, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

April issue Rosemary Mair

Rosemary Mair ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against England without playing a single ODI. Even in she was not in plying XI in the first ODI. So it should be strikeout only in ODI section of the New Zealand squad. Axjuo (talk) 12:35, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have always been on the basis that if a player was available for any of the games in a series, they are not a complete strikeout for that series, regardless of whether they made the XI. Not going to scrap over this one though! Bs1jac (talk) 13:13, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some profile duplicate issue again

Hopefully I won't have to do this enough times in the future (again), but these two umpires currently have duplicate ESPNcricinfo profiles with international records getting split up:

List of Guernsey women's T20 cricketers

@Bs1jac @Mitratanmoy Hannah Meecham and Hannah Eulenkamp are the same person. It has taken ESPNCricinfo three years to catch up with her name change but instead of altering her name on the Eulenkamp profile they've created a new profile. I didn't want to alter this page myself as I know how territorial you guys are so I just thought I'd point it out. Leave it as it is or change it, at least you have the information now. Shrug02 (talk) 21:45, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Not at all territorial other than trying to maintain consistency. I have a contact with Cricinfo, so will pass on the information. Bs1jac (talk) 07:58, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bs1jac I see you changed it. Pity ESPNCricinfo have chosen to continue to use the wrong name. She was Meecham before, and of course after, Eulenkamp so it would have made more sense to keep the new Meecham profile and move the stats across but at least she's not listed as two people anymore. Shrug02 (talk) 19:33, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bs1jac Scratch the above, I see they kept the new profile, just not changed the bit that says "full name". Shrug02 (talk) 19:37, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shrug02 Yeah they sometimes do that. They said they would check with the Guernsey board and then removed the duplicate. Bs1jac (talk) 21:34, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well at least it's more accurate than this time yesterday. I've altered her name on the list page and the other mentions I can find. I've left it as Eulenkamp for the 2019 Inter-insular as that was her name at that point although she didn't play. Shrug02 (talk) 21:38, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shrug02 Thanks I was going to ask you about 2022 whether that was her name at the time Bs1jac (talk) 21:39, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah it was. She's quite an interesting character. Played for Sussex as a teenager, been a police officer in Guernsey (not many of them about) and played for Guernsey a long time including the first ever women's Inter-insular in 2009. Can't remember why she didn't play the first official WT20I in 2019 in the end considering they named her as captain. Could've been police duty or something. 6 for 6 against Isle of Man this year is in the top 10 bowling figures for a WT20I too. Shrug02 (talk) 21:54, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Associate international cricket in 2024

Hello. Were you aware of the women's T20 tri-series between Germany, Italy and Jersey taking place at Krefeld in Germany from 26 to 28 July as detailed in these articles? https://www.cricket.de/3-nationen-turnier/ https://www.jerseycricket.je/latest-news/jersey-women-travel-to-germany-for-t20i-tri-series The series is not on the aforementioned Associate international cricket in 2024 page. Shrug02 (talk) 23:18, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yep we added to the calendar yesterday? Probably doesn't meet notability criteria for its own article. Bs1jac (talk) 07:50, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff. Must have been added after I looked. Just thought I'd give the heads up I'm case. Hope that's ok? Thanks. Shrug02 (talk) 08:05, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Potential Cricinfo error

Good evening. I know from our previous conversations that you have a contact at Cricinfo and I wondered if you could help with something. I created and have regularly updated the page for Isle of Man player Lucy Barnett. Today she scored 88 against Serbia and retired ill with heat stroke but Cricinfo have put her as retired out therefore making her statistics wrong. The game was livestreamed on ECN and in their coverage the commentator said she had retired ill and on scorecards elsewhere they have her as retired injured/ill. Could you pass this on to your contact and have them check with the relevant people and if needed amend their statistics? Of course they may be correct and ECN and others are wrong but I'd like to be sure. Thanks in advance. Shrug02 (talk) 20:18, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shrug02 Thanks. Yes I watched some of that game on ECN and heard the same. ICC card says retired hurt. Will see what I can find out. Bs1jac (talk) 21:16, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Valetta Cup

Good morning. MCC have waived their place in the Valletta Cup final so it's going to be Isle of Man vs Greece. Shrug02 (talk) 10:25, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Inter-insular 50 over match

Good evening. I've added the result of today's 50 over inter-insular match to the overall inter-insular page but noticed it's not mentioned on the 2024 Inter-insular page. I thought I'd point it out in case you wanted to add it as it has appeared on previous year's pages. The match report is here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/articles/cpqj05qrvypo and the 2 squads are here https://jerseyeveningpost.com/sport/more/cricket/2024/09/05/channel-island-rivalry-back-for-season-finale/ if you wanted the information. Shrug02 (talk) 21:57, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shrug02 Hi. Yeah I had hoped to add it again, but just haven't had the time this week. Feel free to add the details. And thanks for updating the overall page. Bs1jac (talk) 22:11, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bs1jac Ok. I'll add the info to the 2024 page. First time doing it though so you might want to check I get it right. All the best. Shrug02 (talk) 22:29, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shrug02 I have done the squads and the intro, so just needs the match summary I think! Bs1jac (talk) 22:42, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bs1jac Yeah I didn't read it all the way down so did the whole thing then saw your message and fixed it...I hope! That'll teach me to read full pages and not assume things. Hope I've not created extra work for you in my ham fisted attempt to be helpful. Shrug02 (talk) 23:00, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Need help

I recently moved a draft article to the main directory on Turkish Wikipedia. Since my native language is Turkish, I was able to carefully review the article. However, this was my first time doing a move, so I'm not entirely sure if everything was done correctly. I followed the guidelines from a PDF I read on Wikipedia and tried to adhere to the instructions. Could you please check my process? If there are any mistakes or missing steps, let me know how I can fix them, as I want to learn how to do this properly. Thank you! Coshua23 (talk) 08:22, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I moved a draft article to the main index. The person in the draft article is a Turkish actor and has an article in the Turkish Wikipedia. The draft article also appears to have been translated from Turkish. I wrote it wrong above. Coshua23 (talk) 08:24, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Italian cricket grounds

Along with Roma Cricket Ground, international cricket has been hosted in Italy in Simar and Aprilia as you know– but any chance the latter two are actually the same ground? I got this thought only because in Google Maps, I noticed that the ground labeled as the Simar ground is situated very close to Aprilia and I don't seem to notice any other cricket ground nearby. It's in 41°33′57.6″N 12°35′22.5″E / 41.566000°N 12.589583°E / 41.566000; 12.589583 if you wish to see it. মাশ্‌ফী※Mashfi (ETP) 06:08, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Quite possibly. I remember trying to work that out when they hosted the women's Mdina Cup in September. Italian announcements were clearly saying Aprilia (as was ICC and Cricinfo), and I couldn't find anything to confirm if it was different to Simar or the same. Bs1jac (talk) 18:01, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ICC and ESPNcricinfo are still saying Aprilia for the Mdina Cup ground of course... nothing to go by from there
Do you remember if there were any Italian publications mentioning the Simar ground by that name during the Europe qualifiers before, though? মাশ্‌ফী※Mashfi (ETP) 18:43, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In this article, I have just updated the player list of Bhutan, Cambodia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates based on Cricclubs. I hope you and some other members with expertise in cricket can review and help me correct it. Thank you! Mohammed07102007 (talk) 02:10, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mohammed07102007 unfortunately cricclubs is unlikely to be correct, and should only be used if there is nothing else oncr the event begins. I have hidden the lists with comment tags so you can easily restore each team when confirmed. Bs1jac (talk) 07:48, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Mohammed07102007 (talk) 09:13, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I wanted to let you know I reverted your changes on 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification (OFC) because the home vs away sides were correct. These matches were held in centralized venues, so sometimes the host teams were officially the away teams despite the match taking place in their country. This is reflected in the match reports. Wburrow (talk) 15:48, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wburrow Figured this might be the case. Personally feel the 'home' team is obviously the team who played at home, but if it is officially not the case then that's fine. Thanks for constructive feedback. I focus more on cricket where there is never a designated home team as such, so we would always put the actual home team first (and otherwise alphabetical).
