Jason Christopher Medeiros,[1] better known as Mr. J. Medeiros, is an American rapper, record producer, and songwriter.[2] In addition to releasing music under his own name, he is a founding member of the hip hop group The Procussions,[3] one half of the electronic/hip hop duo AllttA,[4][5] and the lead singer of the punk-rap group thebandknives.
Medeiros is of Portuguese and Scottish descent and has collaborated with a wide range of artists across various genres. His songwriting credits include collaborations with 20syl, George "Spanky" McCurdy, Thomas Pridgen, Aaron Spears, Éric Serra, Noel Zancanella, Randy Jackson, Marty James, Monte Nueble, Møme, the French hip hop group Hocus Pocus (group), Talib Kweli, Symbolyc One (S1), Illmind, Shad (rapper), Benny Cassette, Stro Elliot, and Caravan Palace, among others.
Music career
Beginnings (1996–1999)
Mr. J. Medeiros (born in Colorado) spent his childhood between Rhode Island and Colorado Springs, Colorado, growing up with parents from the East Coast. He began his career in the local battle rap scene in Colorado, performing under various pseudonyms. His first recording opportunity came through The Spot, a center for At-risk_students and urban youth in Denver, which featured him on their 1998 compilation album Blow Up The Spot.
Medeiros' debut as a recording artist under his current stage name came with the song "The Life of Brian," produced by Noel Zancanella. This track would later appear on The Procussions 2005 album Up All Night.
In addition to his solo work, Mr. J. Medeiros DJ'd for the local hip-hop group T.I.O., where he met Qq and TMAL (now known as Stro Elliot). These collaborations eventually led to the formation of The Procussions. Medeiros was also involved in the B-boy and B-girl (Breakdancing) scene, having been a member of the dance crews T.S.F. and Bomb City Breakers.
The Procussions (1999–2007 / 2012–2014)
Mr. J. Medeiros co-founded The Procussions with Qq in Colorado Springs. The group initially consisted of five members: Mr. J. Medeiros, Stro Elliot, Rez (originally Resonant), Vise Versa, and Qq (pronounced "Q"), with Vajra (now known as Chris Karns) as their DJ. The group later became a quartet when Qq was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
The Procussions performed throughout Colorado, opening for notable acts such as Run-D.M.C., The Pharcyde, and Common. They also released two 12-inch singles, "All That It Takes" and "Leave Her Alone," which gained distribution through fr:ABB Records "All That It Takes" reached No. 9 on the College Music Journal hip hop charts.[6]
Building on this momentum, Mr. J. Medeiros convinced the group to relocate to Los Angeles in pursuit of making music their full-time career.[6] Shortly after, Vise Versa left The Procussions to form the group Deux Process.[7]
In Los Angeles, The Procussions independently released their debut album, As Iron Sharpens Iron, through Bassmentalism Records on October 28, 2003.[8] The album peaked at No. 5 on the CMJ Hip-Hop charts.[9]
In early 2004, The Procussions released a jazz-influenced EP, Up All Night, exclusively in Japan.[10][11][12]
In 2006, The Procussions became the first group to sign with the newly resurrected Rawkus Records.[13] Their second album, 5 Sparrows for 2 Cents, became the label's first post-reboot release. The record featured Talib Kweli, and the lead single, "Miss January," featured Mr. J. Medeiros rapping alongside Kweli.[14][15][16] The album peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.[17] The release coincided with the group's first national co-headlining tour.[18]
In 2007, Rez left the group to pursue a career in photography.[19] In early 2008, Mr. J. and Stro Elliot made the decision to disband The Procussions and continue with their solo careers.[20]
In 2012, Mr. J. and Stro reunited as The Procussions for a performance.[21] The show generated renewed interest, leading to an Indiegogo campaign to fund the production of a new album. The campaign exceeded its goal, raising nearly double the intended amount,[22] and on April 11, 2013, the self-titled album, The Procussions, was released to supporters. Five tracks from the album were also released as The Procussions EP on limited edition vinyl.[23] The album features collaborations with Shad, ¡Mayday!, 20syl (of Hocus Pocus), and Italian trumpeter de:Kyle Gregory. It was released in Europe via fr: Yotanka_Records[24] and independently in the United States. A follow-up EP, The Pro-Exclusive EP, was released in 2014, featuring six previously unreleased tracks.
In 2015, The Procussions went on hiatus. Mr. J. Medeiros focused on the AllttA and thebandknives projects while relocating to France. Stro Elliot joined The Roots[25] and became part of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[26]
Touring
The Procussions toured extensively across the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Europe, gaining recognition for their high-energy performances, which included live drums and DJ Vajra on turntables.[27] Over the course of their three releases, the group toured with prominent acts such as The Roots,[28] Mos Def, Sound Tribe Sector 9, and De La Soul.[19] Following the release of 5 Sparrows For Two Cents, The Procussions embarked on The Storm Tour with Aceyalone, Ugly Duckling, ¡Mayday!, and Wrekonize, playing 40 U.S. cities and returning to Europe for several festival appearances.[18]
After a U.S. show, the group was approached by Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest,[29][30] who invited them to join 2K Sports' 2006 Bounce Tour with Tribe and Rhymefest.[31] The Procussions performed on 15 dates alongside Tribe and Rhymefest.[32]
The Procussions and Hocus Pocus
While touring France in 2004, The Procussions connected with French hip hop group Hocus Pocus, beginning a longstanding collaboration. The Procussions appeared on two tracks from Hocus Pocus' albums: "Hip Hop?" from 73 Touches (2005) and "Vocab!" from Place 54 (2007), which went Gold in France.[33] Mr. J. and Stro were also featured on the track “Signes de Temps” from Hocus Pocus' 2010 album 16 Pièces. Additionally, Mr. J. Medeiros contributed to the song "You" on Hocus Pocus' 73 Touches, a track originally titled "Amelie" and later included on his own album, Of Gods and Girls.
Mr. J. Medeiros (2007– )
Mr. J. Medeiros made his solo debut in 2007 with Of Gods and Girls on Rawkus Records. He handled most of the production, including tracks like "Constance," "Keep Pace," "Silent Earth," and "Call You," with contributions from producers Symbolyc One (S1), Illmind, 20syl, Stro Elliot, Ohmega Watts, Joe Beats, and Headnodic. Guest vocals included Pigeon John, Strange Fruit Project, and Marty James. The album's single "Constance," addressing human trafficking and child pornography, premiered in 2004 on his Myspace page but gained attention after the Rawkus deal and its music video release. The video garnered commercial support from VH1 and appeared on CBS Evening News in a feature on sex trafficking. Despite being considered "too controversial" by MTV, the video was later used by MTV EXIT. Medeiros also launched the iamconstance.com campaign to raise awareness about human trafficking. Of Gods and Girls received critical acclaim, with 4.5-5 star ratings from HipHopDX and AllHipHop.[34]
In early 2008, Medeiros signed with Quannum Projects to release his second album, Friends Enemies Apples Apples, which was produced by Stro Elliot and co-produced by Medeiros. After delays, Medeiros formed De Medeiros and shifted to an independent route, releasing the The Art of Broken Glass EP in 2009, produced by Boonie Mayfield, followed by the official release of Friends Enemies Apples Apples.
In 2011, Medeiros became one of the first hip-hop artists to crowdfund an album release via Indiegogo for his third album, Saudade. The campaign exceeded its funding goal by 257%, earning Medeiros a mention in Business Insider. The music video for the single "Neon Signs" won the mtvU Freshman Video challenge. Saudade introduced his production team, "The Stare," and featured jazz trumpeter J. Kyle Gregory. The "Pale Blue Dot" EP, released in 2012, included production from Stro Elliot, The Stare, and 20syl, with guest vocals from Shad. The 20syl remix of "Pale Blue Dot" won an International Portuguese Music Awards for best Hip Hop single. In 2013, Medeiros released another free EP, The Rockies, produced by Stro Elliot and featuring Canadian rappers Relic and RationaL.
In 2014, Medeiros announced his final solo album, Milk and Eggs. The album was funded via Indiegogo and was over-funded. It was a sample-free hip hop album, written by Medeiros and produced by guitarist Tim Stewart, with contributions from musicians George "Spanky" McCurdy, Ricky Tillo, Monte Neuble, and Stro Elliot. The vinyl and CD were limited to 500 copies, with physical merchandise exclusively distributed to backers in 2015. A digital release followed in January 2016.
In 2021, Mr. J. Medeiros released a vinyl edition of his 2007 debut album, Of Gods and Girls. Two limited edition cover artworks were produced: one with 100 copies and another with 200 copies.

"Savages" by AllttA (2019)
"Savages" was released in 2019 and received attention for its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate the vocal style of rapper Jay-Z. The use of AI technology in music production was recognized for its technical aspects and its potential implications for the music industry.[38]
"Savages" is noted for being one of the first songs to use AI-generated vocals based on a well-known artist. The track employed AI to synthesize Jay-Z’s vocal style, allowing the song to feature lyrics that Jay-Z himself had not recorded. This highlighted the growing use of AI in the music industry, raising questions about the future role of technology in creative processes.[39]
The AI-generated vocals were noted for their fidelity to Jay-Z's vocal tone and delivery. Critics pointed out the accuracy of the simulation, which demonstrated the potential for AI technology to replicate human voices in a way that could be useful for music production. The AI used in *"Savages"* was regarded as one of the more advanced applications of this technology in music at the time.[40]
The release of *"Savages"* attracted significant media coverage. Outlets like *Rolling Stone* [38], *VIBE* [39], *Hip Hop DX* [40], *XXL* [41], and *Complex* [42] discussed the implications of AI technology in music. International news outlets such as *The New Yorker* [43], *Le Parisien* [44], *BuzzFeed* [45], and *MSNBC* [46] covered the discussion surrounding AI-generated music and the ethical concerns associated with such technology.
Jay-Z’s longtime producer Young Guru, who is closely associated with Jay-Z’s sound, commented on the song, noting the technological innovation it represented while also expressing concerns about the broader implications of AI in music. Additionally, tech reviewer Marques_Brownlee shared a tweet about the track, which gained significant traction online, contributing to the wider conversation about AI in music production.[47]
Beyond its technical achievements, *"Savages"* raised discussions about the role of AI in the creative industries. The song’s use of AI to recreate Jay-Z's voice prompted debates about the boundaries of artistic expression and whether AI could become a tool for artists in various fields. The track also contributed to ongoing discussions about how AI might shape the future of the music industry.[44][46]
The A.I. version of the track was initially made available as a non-commercial release, while the version without the A.I. model was officially released in 2023. "Savages" was not included on any full-length album, but was instead distributed as a standalone single.
Curio Part l & ll (2023)
In 2023, AllttA followed up with the release of their two-part album series, Curio Parts 1 & 2. The albums were accompanied by a limited edition embossed-cover vinyl (only 100 made), they headlined Élysée_Montmartrein Paris that year.
AllttA frequently collaborates with American tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee who features their music in his videos.
