Němec (Czech pronunciation: [ˈɲɛmɛts], feminine: Němcová (Czech pronunciation: [ˈɲɛmtsovaː])) is a common Czech surname, meaning German, "mute", or "(he) does not speak (Slavic)". It comes from Proto-Slavic *němьcь ("foreigner" or "German"), from *němъ ("mute") (Czech: němý). The unaccented variant Nemec is mainly found in Slovakia and Slovenia, with Nemcová being the feminine form in the former.
