Olajumoke Orisaguna (born 1989) is a Nigerian model and radio talk show host who first gained public attention after she accidentally photobombed a photo shoot with British rapper Tinie Tempah while hawking bread on the streets of Lagos. The incident and resulting photo led to major deals, most notably in modelling and reality TV, her grass-to-grace story was covered by various media sources including CNN and BBC Africa, and she was hailed as a role model.[1][2][3] In 2024, after a five-year hiatus, Orisaguna reappeared in the media to reveal she had suffered domestic violence and exploitation, both of which derailed her once-thriving career.[4]

Early life

Orisaguna was born in 1989, raised in Ire, Osun State, and trained as a hairdresser. Her relationship with Sunday Orisaguna, an artisan, produced two children, but his family's hostility – in addition to Sunday's physical abuse – fueled tension in their home. Following an altercation with Sunday's sister, Olajumoke decided to leave the relationship and move to Lagos [5] where she made a living hawking bread.[6][7]

Modelling

In 2016, Orisaguna was captured in the background of a photo shoot with British-Nigerian rapper Tinie Tempah taken by celebrity photographer TY Bello.[8] Upon reviewing and editing the images, Bello decided that Orisaguna possessed modelling potential, [8] and after posting the photograph on Instagram to rave reviews from the public, she scouted Orisaguna and offered to help launch her career. Bello subsequently arranged for Orisaguna's portrait to appear on Style magazine's cover, and planned to create a documentary about her.[8] [8]

Despite her limited education and minimal English proficiency (She is fluent in Yoruba), Orisaguna signed a contract with Few Model Management.[9] She was offered a scholarship by Sujimoto Group and Poise Nigeria. Her courses were Etiquette, Soft Skills, Social Graces, and Communication at Poise Nigeria. The scholarship was to ensure that Olajumoke was prepared for life after the media attention subsided.[10]

[11] Olajumoke Orisaguna was given a joint scholarship initiated by Sujimoto Group and co-sponsored by Sujimoto Group and Poise Nigeria. She is learning taught Etiquette, Social Graces and grooming over a period of 1 year

During her tenure as a model, Orisaguna landed brand deals with various companies including clothes store PayPorté,[12], bakery firm Shirley's Bread, [13] Layo G, [14] and womenswear brand Salmah Guzel.[15] She also appeared on the cover of Above. According to CNN, a bank offered to pay for her children to attend school.[9]

Controversy

In a YouTube video Olajumoke Sauce 7: Trends and Acceptance uploaded in February 2018,[16] Orisaguna declared herself shocked by the fact that some people are gay and have the right to marry persons of the same sex. Orisaguna declared homosexuality to be "un-Nigerian" and said in the Yoruba language,[17] "I know that there is no Nigerian that was born as a gay or lesbian". She also said that she found it difficult to sleep after she discovered on Facebook that some gay men and women plan to marry persons of the same sex. Orisaguna appeared to threaten LGBT people when she stated that they "will be dealt with in ways you can’t imagine".[17]

In response,[18] Nigerian transgender model Veso Golden Oke[19] posted a video[20] blasting the model, advising her to learn more about the LGBT community. Under Nigerian law based on British colonial jurisprudence, same-sex relationships between LGBT people remain a criminal offence, with maximum punishments ranging from 14 years imprisonment to the death penalty.

After her limelight to fame, her partner Sunday - who had since moved in with her in Lagos - [21] alleged that ever since she became a superstar, she has been disrespecting him and putting their marriage into disrepute. In response, she granted an [22] interview to The Punch saying her relationship is intact, and only God would judge between her husband and herself for the interview he has been granting about her.

Comeback

In 2024, after a five-year hiatus, Orisaguna spoke to radio host Ibukun 'Bybisasa' Adesoye on City FM and revealed that she was never legally married to her now ex-husband, and his jealousy contributed to further domestic violence which she kept hidden from her mentor Bello. [23] Her limited formal education had prevented her from reading contracts her new manager offered, leading to a loss in earnings. Orisaguna has expressed her willingness to acquire an education (She was unable to complete her English and etiquette classes due to commuter issues), and is currently reinventing herself as a radio presenter with the talk show Kilon Shele.[24]
