Talk:Detroit Lakes, Minnesota
Advert (April 22, 2007)
Why is elaborating on this tourist town's tourist shopping, lodging, entertainment, etc... opportunities advertising? I have no interest in a particular business in the area. Rather, I am simply trying to help interested inquirers learn more about this great city. unsigned message by User:Kingkoin
- Because it is not neutral, impartial information, but boosterism, as your own words ("this great city") prove. --Orange Mike 18:40, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
What do we need to do with this page? Umtc2011 9:56, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
- Re-write it into an article suitable for an encyclopedia rather than a Tourist Guide. Mercilessly trim the boosterism, peacock words, etc., in favor of impartial information about history, business, government, industry, etc., in proper proportion. The present version is blatantly tourism-oriented and not at all impartial. --Orange Mike 03:20, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

I suggest we go to heck with Googling "Detroit Lakes, Minnesota". There are mostly tourist-geared sites, which User:Kingkoin undoubtedly used as sources to do nothing but advertise for the city. However, the Becker County Historical Society might help, as will the city of Detroit Lakes webpage, which has good information on government, history, schools, churches, etc. The page is one of the only sites about Detroit Lakes, Minnesota that provides neutral, encyclopedia-worthy information that I have found. Link: www.ci.detroit-lakes.mn.us Hope this helps! Umtc2011 11:33, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed, Umtc2011. In fact, I am concerned Kingkoin may be connected to the King Koin chain of laundromats in the area, including in Detroit Lakes, and possibly having a vested interest in business listings in the article. mitcho/芳貴 19:14, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
www.ci.detroit-lakes.mn.us is the place to go. The city has an interesting school system that appears to be worthy of mention in the article. user:Kingkoin did put together a decent section about the schools, but peacock words must be trimmed, as you mentioned, User:Orange Mike. In my google efforts, I've located the sites which Kingkoin incorrectly cited. I've checked the info and much of the information he/she provided and it is largely correct and accurate, so I've tried to correctly format it but I can't seem to get it to show up properly in the reference section I added at the end. Anyone able to help with this? We still need to neutralize and completely rewrite the business/industry sections that Kingkoin created. I must say, however, that the section on schools, recreation, etc... are fairly well put together and do not need our immediate attention. Our focus must be on the business-related segments of the page for now. Umtc2011 17:31, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

thanks for correcting my reference issues. Like I stated earlier, I am new to the program. Economic info. can possibly be found using the city's webpage, but nothing elaborate. That's why I used the tourist-geared websites (through Jack Chivers Realty and the chamber of commerce, I believe) to create the economic section. Kingkoin
