Sanjay Kumar Verma is an Indian diplomat who was the High Commissioner of India to Canada. He previously served as the former Ambassador of India to Japan and the Marshall Islands [1], and Sudan [2]
Verma is deeply passionate about Information Technology, Artificial intelligence, Cyber Diplomacy, delivery of people-centric services using interactive technologies, guiding and facilitating small businesses and investors [3]
Early life and education
Sanjay Kumar Verma was born in Patna, Bihar, India, in 1965, into a family with roots in public service. His father, a civil engineer, worked for the state government, resulting in Verma's early education across several towns in Bihar, including Patna, Daltonganj, and Latehar.
Career
Early diplomatic career
Verma joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988 and has served in numerous key diplomatic postings in China, Vietnam, and Turkey. He also served as Consul General of India in Milan, Italy. [4]
High Commissioner to Canada
Sanjay Kumar Verma was India’s High Commissioner to Canada from September 2022 till October 2024. In this role, Verma was responsible for managing and strengthening India-Canada relations, which include overseeing diplomatic, trade, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
Verma was a key player in the Canada–India diplomatic row of 2023. Following Canadian allegations without proof, the government of India recalled Verma as the Canadian government could not provide adequate security to him [5].
