Introduction
[edit]"Proposed classification of neurodevelopmental disorder" is clearer than "proposed neurodevelopmental disorder" because the latter makes it sound a bit like they're proposing a brand new disorder that no one had before. This disorder has probably been around forever, but researchers have only recently noticed it and started squabbling about what exactly are the symptoms and what to call it. "Proposed classification" makes it clear that "it" clearly exists but we don't have an "official" word for it.Asmith1992 (talk) 13:14, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Asmith1992, thanks for this note. I agree that your phrase sounds less clunky. The only thing I can suggest is that since we don't know (from a nosology standpoint) whether NVLD actually is an "it" (as opposed to a "them" or another name for something else), then we don't want to strongly imply that "it" is definitely a separate and discrete thing. Developing and unaccepted classifications are always difficult to write about. We need to be fair to both the "NVLD is its own separate thing totally different from Aspergers" and the "NVLD is just Aspergers by another name" camps. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:18, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- @WhatamIdoin Other than Spreen (who's dead), are there any scientists who still question that NVLD is distinct from Asperger's? Asmith1992 03:53, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- This is what the sources I've seen seem to indicate.
- One particular webpage contained the following:
- a statement that 80% of people diagnosed with NVLD are also diagnosed with Asperger's, and
- a case study, meant to highlight the difference between the two, of a teenage girl who (a) met the criteria for Asperger's but (b) was told that she had NVLD instead of Asperger's.
- That web page is not a research paper or a professional reference work, but given the significant biases in Asperger's diagnoses, I have wondered since reading that webpage just how much of the supposedly non-Aspie 20% is female, and the lack of an ASD label is basically due to sexism.
- I'll also add that several of the sources that say they're different point specifically to an alleged requirement for stereotyped behaviors or restricted interests to get an ASD diagnosis as the main difference. There is no such requirement. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:30, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

"a statement that 80% of people diagnosed with NVLD are also diagnosed with Asperger's" that's surprising, I'd be interested in the source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asmith1992 (talk • contribs) 18:39, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- I'd be more interested in seeing some really good research on the subject. I imagine that the Inter-rater reliability problem would be significant. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:21, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
@StellaRover27, I agree with the sentiment. But, I think that a discussion about a disabling neurological condition that results in widespread suffering shouldn't get bogged down in issues of politically correct language ("difference" vs "impairment"). There is a "difference," but the difference is that there is an impairment. "Difference" is vague and obscures the meaning. All scientific and clinical literature refers to an impairment or deficit, not a simply a difference. This article could use some additional contributors though.
ICD-10
[edit]I've removed a ref "supporting" the claim that ICD-10 doesn't classify NVLD.[1]
- The reference removed was to single code on an ICD-10-CM look up service website; ICD-10-CM is technically not the ICD-10; but an adaption specifically used in the USA.
- Whilst I could have, instead, changed the link to WHO's ICD-10 online browser; WP:BLUESKY and WP:SYNTH suggest doing so wouldn't be needed/appropriate (depending which you want to apply)
