Winifred Smith Rieber (1872–1963) was an American artist known for her portraits.
Rieber nee Smith born on January 22, 1872 in Carson City, Nevada.[1] She studied at the California School of Design,[2] and at the Boston School of Fine Arts.[1] In 1890 she married the educator and philosopher Charles H. Rieber (1866-1948).[3] The couple had several children including the geophysicist Frank Rieber[4] and the artist and writer Dorothy Rieber Joralemon.[5]
Rieber died on January 25, 1963 in Sonoma, California.[1]
Notable subjects she portrayed include William Carey Jones,[2] Arthur Shipley,[6] William James, George Herbert Palmer, and Josiah Royce.[7] She also created portraits of Wesley Clair Mitchell[8] and Franz Boas.[9]
