Phillip Escott (born December 30th, 1983) is a Welsh filmmaker. He has directed both fiction and non-fiction films and has worked extensively in the home entertainment industry.

Early life

Escott was born in Ely, Cardiff.[1]

Career

He began his career as a camera operator, working on low-budget movies produced by The Asylum. [2]

In 2016, his debut feature film Cruel Summer, received it's World Premiere at London's FrighFest. The controversial horror drama starred Emmerdale's Danny Miller.[3]

Escott then began working with a number of the leading boutique film distribution labels, such as Arrow Video, Severin Films and Second Sight Films, where he produced a number of documentaries and short form pieces. [4]

In 2021 he co-produced and co-directed the Shudder Original documentary The Found Footage Phenomenon with Sarah Appleton.[5] The documentary played at a number of leading genre film festivals, including Sitges in Spain and Fantastic Fest in the USA.[6]

His next feature film, Masters of Mayhem, is an in-depth look at Italian exploitation cinema and the people who created these often controversial films.[7]

Awards and Nominations

In 2021 The Found Footage Phenomenon was nominated for Best Documentary at the Sitges Film Festival.[8]

In 2023 The Found Footage Phenomenon was nominated for Best Documentary at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.[9]

Escott won the Best Documentary award for The Legacy of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.[10]
