CINECA is a non profit consortium, made up of 28 Italian universities, the National Research Council (CNR) and the Ministry of University and Research (MiUR), and was established in 1969 in Casalecchio di Reno, Bologna.

It is the most powerful supercomputing centre in Italy. Its institutional mission is to support the Italian scientific community through supercomputing and through the most advanced information processing systems.

CINECA has a computing environment equipped with cutting-edge technology, and highly-qualified personnel who cooperate with researchers in both the academic and industrial fields.

Since the end of the 1980s, CINECA has broadened the scope of its mission by embracing many IT sectors, developing management and administrative services for universities and designing telematic systems for the exchange of information between the Ministry of University and Research and the national academic system. Moreover, the Consortium is also strongly committed to transfer technology to many categories of users, from the Public Administration to private enterprises.

Thanks to the skills built up in its almost 40-year history, CINECA is able to guarantee exceptional standards of quality in the provision of services.

CINECA takes part in several EU-funded research projects for the promotion, development and dissemination of leading IT technologies.
