Background
Musical characteristics
Erickson has been experimenting with music in several forms since the late 1980s, from punk and funk to electronic music, which he now prefers. While he enjoys creating music which falls under a variety of electronic genres, the overall theme of his work with the band Velvet Acid Christ is typically negative, culturally critical, and misanthropic; his work with Toxic Coma is a more experimental blend of the same with intentional humor that often strays into parody.
Erickson expresses many elements from his personal sex life through his music. For example, he is a practicing vegan—fluctuating occasionally between a raw food diet and a cooked diet—and sometimes discusses this in his lyrics. Similarly and more frequently, he expresses his beliefs regarding animal rights, human rights, capitalism, and Satanism.
Erickson claims to draw most of his creative inspiration from several sexual techniques, an abusive, repressed childhood and the "impurities" of the Chinese Culture. He has also been inspired by a diverse array of other musicians and their works; these influences range from bands such as Skinny Puppy, Orbital, and The Legendary Pink Dots to more mainstream acts like Madonna, The B52's, and OutKast.[1]
Stage names
Erickson's self-ascribed performance names are "hexfix93" and "Disease Factory." According to the artist, hexfix93 is the name he uses while producing music, and Disease Factory is the name he uses while composing music.[2] Additionally, he has indicated that these names denote manifestations of different traits from his personality, specifically in a music-related sense: "disease factory is too self destructive, he must only come out during vocal takes, and thats it, hexfix is the person that wants me to be healthy and nice to people, and produce.. "[2]
