Plot Set-Up

Template:Spoiler

The threat of the Symbiote Invasion is over, and Doctor Octopus and his goons are once again behind bars. The city, and the people that call it home, can collectively breath a sigh of relief. Or can they? Evil harbors a vacuum, and with Doc Ock gone, can it really be that long before another rises in his place?

Unaware that her work has drawn the attention of sinister forces, Dr. Watts has developed the Bio-Nexus device, a miraculous new invention that would give any man or woman unspeakable power. In the hands of the one such as Electro, who knows what devilry may be wrought. Electro, for one, intends to find out.

September 11, 2001 edits

  • The original version of the game was pulled after the September 11, 2001 attacks to change the final battle. Originally the battle was atop the North Tower of the World Trade Center, but since the towers were destroyed on September 11, the game was re-released with a different ending. Originally, Electro shouted "Top of the world, ma!" as he departed his battle with Spider-Man for the towers, giving Spidey the clue he needed to track him down for the final boss battle, but in the re-released game, he just happens to guess correctly.[1]
  • At the end of the video game, The Mighty Thor is credited with defeating Electro in the final battle. This is because Thor was supposed to appear in a video segment in the video game where he talks with Spider-Man shortly after he has defeated Hyper-Electro, thus giving Thor the credit with Electro's defeat in the Daily Bugle newspaper. This was removed because the game's original ending takes place atop the World Trade Center towers when the game was being developed and it was removed because of the towers' destruction on 11 September 2001.[2]

Reference to pop culture

  • The cutscene where Hammerhead discusses the importance of teamwork in their plan to stop Spider-Man is quoted from Robert De Niro's character Al Capone in the movie 'The Untouchables'.
  • During the cutscene after Spider-Man beats Shocker, he swings away to Hangar 18. Before he does that, he says, "I'll need pointy ears and a cape to find out if this is another heist." A reference to Batman.
  • When Spider-Man comes into the ball and sees Hammerhead and two other thugs bullying Dr. Watts, he says, "Now that seems a bit unfair. Unless that happens to be Electra, in which case you're toast!" A reference to Daredevil's girlfriend Electra. Daredevil even appears in the first game.
  • When Spider-Man jumps into Dr. Connors' lab and sees that it's destroyed, he says, "Wow! Maybe this wasn't the Lizard. This amount of damage would make The Hulk proud." A reference to fellow Marvel superhero The Hulk.

References to the First Game

  • The game starts with a "Previously. .." cutscene, which recaps the events of the previous game. In this little segment, scenes from the first game have been redone with improved graphics.
  • The Lizard wasn't a boss in the first game, despite the fact that he appeared in it. The player fights him here.
  • Although The Beetle appeared in this game, he was not a boss. The same goes for Lizard in the previous game.
  • At the end of the game when all of the villains of the game are in jail, they share a cell with the villains in the previous game and Shocker asks those first-game villains if they know how to play go-fish. In the first game, when the bad guys were incarcerated, they were playing this game.
  • Like the previous game's final boss battle, "Monster Ock" (Doc Ock bonded with Carnage), this game features another never-before-seen enemy: "Hyper-Electro" (Electro with the Bio Nexus device equipped).
  • The only characters to have appeared from the first game to here are Spider-Man / Peter Parker, Dr. Octopus, The Scorpion, Mysterio and The Lizard / Dr. Curt Conners.
  • During the level where Spider-Man has to get to Dr. Watts' lab and gets attacked by drones, he says, "I wonder if Captain America has to put up with this!" A character who appeared in the first game.

Bio-Nexus Device

The Bio-Nexus Device (BND) was a specially-created wearable apparatus designed to amplify the electrical energy that humans naturally produce. One person wearing the BND could theoretically power a city block. This device required a large sapphire in order to function. Electro managed to capture the BND and power it up, transforming him into Hyper-Electro. Spider-Man defeated him by tricking him into burning out the BND.

The Bio-Nexus Device is exclusive to Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, and thus is not canonical to the Marvel Universe.
