Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is an announced sports game by Sega and Nintendo,[3] and the first official game featuring both Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, Nintendo and Sega's former rival mascots, along with other characters from their respective series. It is set for release on both the Wii and Nintendo DS, and is officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee through exclusive licensee International Sports Multimedia.[4] It will be the first official game of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games to be released, with a more realistic sports game to be later released by Sega in 2008.[5]

According to IGN, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is supervising the project.[2] The game or one of its two versions may be co-developed by TOSE.[1]

Gameplay

The gameplay is currently unknown, but is stated to use Wii Remote and the Nintendo DS stylus to the full potential. The game is set to take place at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, and will feature locations based on the official venues for sporting events during the Games, however these venues will be stylized to fit the art styles of the Mario series and/or Sonic series.

Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming meet, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.[4]

So far, there have been 6 confirmed characters from both the Mario series and the Sonic series, with more to be confirmed at a later date.
