Denise Celeste Wicks (née Fox) is a fictional character in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders. She is played by Diane Parish. She made her first appearance on Thursday 11 May 2006 and she works at Walford Post Office.

History

Denise has two daughters, Chelsea and Libby (nicknamed "Squiggle" as a much younger Chelsea first described what her sister looked like on a baby scan). She is fiercely protective of her daughters, and arrived to discover Chelsea was seeing and had slept with Grant Mitchell, who was more than 20 years her senior. She went into The Queen Vic and shouted at Kevin Wicks, thinking he was Grant, but Chelsea told her she had the wrong man.

On Monday 19 June 2006 Denise and Kevin finally kissed, and after over a month of trying exceptionally hard to win Denise over, Kevin managed to woo her. Kevin supported Denise in her feud with her ex-husband, Owen Turner.

In July, Chelsea's manageress at Fargo's, Elaine Jarvis, took a fancy to Kevin. Elaine then sacked Chelsea for complaining about wearing a babyish outfit and then walked in on Kevin and Denise passionately kissing in the kitchen of Fargo's. Kevin then dumped Elaine.

Owen returned from Spain in July 2006 and was determined to make sure he got to see Squiggle. On Squiggle's birthday, she convinced Denise and Owen to have dinner together. Owen used this opportunity to make his move on Denise and she said she would think about allowing him time to see Squiggle. Owen and Denise slept together that day. At this time, Chelsea and Squiggle thought Denise was going to get back with Kevin, but she broke it off with him. The news of Denise and Owen's moment together was received very happily by Squiggle but Chelsea was disgusted by what happened. Her comments about this led to Denise slapping her. Denise decided to break it off with Owen but after a few drinks at the pub he hit her and viciously announced that he's back and going to stay.

On July 31, Denise made the decision to leave the Square without Owen. Chelsea announced that she did not want to go and the two had a long talk together. Denise revealed that she still loved Owen despite that fact that her hit her. It was also revealed that Owen had, at one point, hit Chelsea. Denise realised she made a huge mistake with Owen, after Chelsea pointed out that Squiggle was the only one who did not know that he was hitting her. She also pointed out that Owen found it very convenient to hit Denise whenever Squiggle was asleep, so obviously he was not too drunk to know what he was doing.

When Denise tried to break up with Owen, he attacked her and knocked a tooth out, and caused a lot of cuts and bruises to her face and ribs. He was arrested after taking her and Kevin hostage with a knife.

Owen's mother Liz later arrived in Walford for Owen's trial, and took Squiggle to see Owen in prison. Squiggle was upset and persuaded Denise to provide a character witness for Owen. Owen was given a suspended sentence, and planned to move to Wales. However, he stopped the taxi at the last minute and kidnapped Squiggle, phoning Denise to tell her that he was going to kill her and commit suicide. Denise rushed to Epping Forest, where the police had had a sightng of Owen, and screamed her daughter's name. Squiggle called back, and this caused Owen to try and drown her and himself. Denise and Kevin found Squiggle unconscious, and took her home. However, Squiggle hated the flat, as it reminded her of her ordeal, so Denise took her family to live with Kevin and his family.

In October, Denise was puzzled by Yolande Trueman when she said that Patrick, Yolande's husband, was in a band called The Five Hectors. Denise knew that her father, whom she never knew, was also in a band called The Five Hectors. Denise and Yolande pondered as there was a 1 in 5 chance of Patrick being Denise's father. A second member of the group, Cedric Lucas had died in the same week. At Cedric's funeral, a third member of the band showed up, named Aubrey Valentine. Denise realises that any of the five members could be her long-lost father, three of whom, Cedric, Dwight and Earl, are dead. Aubrey and Patrick agreed to paternity tests.

After Aubrey left Walford after trying to seduce Patrick's wife, Patrick agreed to the test. He awaited for the phone call telling him if he was indeed Denise's father, but he was not. Not wanting to disappoint Libby (and also having grown attached to the family), he lied to the Foxes, telling them that he was Denise's father. The Fox family were over the moon.

On 4 December, Kevin took his two children Deano and Carly, along with the Foxes (Denise, Libby and Chelsea), and the Truemans (Patrick and Yolande) on holiday to Dorset so that they could "bond" as a family. It was then that Patrick admitted to Denise that he was not her father.

It was on this holiday that she came across Carly and Deano's real mother Shirley. Shirley showed up at Albert Square on New Years Day and despite being warned off by Kevin she worked her way into the house by giving Carly (who has met Shirley on the holiday but had not known who she really was) a false name and letting herself be invited back. However Carly guessed who she was after seeing Shirley and Kevin argueing on the street and revealed all to Deano and kicked Shirley out. Later on Shirley handed Denise her number in The Vic to give to Deano and Carly and despite initially throwing it away Denise gave it to Deano after he appeared to be depressed and troubled. Deano went to visit Shirley but after seeing her in bed with someone he came back horrified which made his condition worse. Deano's stress caused him to crash his car while Chelsea was in it, leading to Denise confessing that she gave Deano Shirley's number after Chelsea called Shirley about the accident. It looked like this revelation would cause problems between Kevin and Denise but they managed to sort things out. However, Kevin then dropped the bombshell that he isn't Carly and Deanos real father, causing him to run away after some harsh words from his daughter. Denise many times vented her fury over Kevin's abandonment and twice decided to move out. The first time Pat managed to talk her round and the 2nd time she was stopped by Kevin's surprise return. She initially rejected him and was even more furious when Shirley told Denise in front of a crowded Queen Vic to marry Kevin, and decided that she, Libby and Chelsea were definetley leaving Walford. Kevin tried proposing to Denise properly himself but she rejected him. When Denise went back to Pat's to collect the rest of her things she tried on the engagement ring Kevin had offered her before and it got stuck on her finger. Kevin came back to the house to try and talk her into staying and she agreed to move back in while hiding the ring from Kevin. He eventually found it and after some childish bickering they agreed to give marriage a go.

On 16 April Denise revealed that she had picked 27 April as her and Kevin's wedding date, the anniversary of his deceased son Jimbo's death. Denise had no idea about the day and started to have second thoughts about marriage and began doubting whether she and Kevin were meant to be married. However, after talking to her, Kevin realised how much he loved Denise and pleaded with her to marry him on that day. After Pat let slip what day had been chosen for the wedding, Deano went to the car lot to confront Kevin just after Denise had agreed to go through with the wedding after all. He told his father that if the wedding was held on that day he would not attend. After failed attempts to talk Deano around by Kevin, Denise asked Shirley to have a word with him. She agreed but instead told Deano that Denise was trying to control their family and encouraged him to move in with her permanently. On 23 April Denise confessed her concerns that Deano's refusal to turn up would ruin their wedding day so she and Kevin agreed to postpone the wedding. The next day, Kevin confided in Denise that he felt Deano had been stolen from him by Shirley after Deano has announced he was moving in with Shirley permanently. At Denise's hen night Shirley got her drunk, which resulted in a fight between Pat and Shirley, getting them both arrested. In the back of the police van while being driven to the police station, Shirley told Pat that she slept with Kevin in March. She then revealed her plans to tell Denise everything, which caused Pat to call Kevin to warn him about Shirley's plans. However, Kevin did not recieve the message until the next morning, the wedding day. After Shirley and Pat were released, Shirley went straight to Denise, but just as she was about to knock on the door, Kevin intercepted and pulled Shirley away, telling her not to say a word. Shirley then asked Kevin to have a drink with her to mark the anniversary of Jimbo's death, which he agreed to. Later however, after Kevin failed to turn up for their drink, Shirley made for the registry office with the intention of revealing all to Denise. Denise deduced that something was wrong and Kevin pulled her aside and confessed that he slept with Shirley. Denise was stunned by his revelation and accused him of proposing to her out of the guilt after his night of passion with Shirley, but he explained he was depressed when it happened and pleaded with her not to cancel the wedding. Kevin then compared Shirleys attempts to ruin his life to that of Denise's ex-husband Owen's, but this caused her to throw him out of the room and remove her engagement ring. When Shirley arrived she started looking for Denise and when she found her in the toilets she started hinting towards what happened between her and Kevin, having no idea that Kevin had told her everything. Shirley eventually announced with triumph that she slept with Kevin, but was stunned to see Denise had no surprise on her face. Kevin and Pat went into the toilets to try and stop Shirley but Denise announced that seeing the joy Shirley took in messing Kevin around convinced her that Kevin was in fact right about Shirley's motivations and said she was going through with the wedding after all. Denise went back to where the ceremony was taking place with Kevin and Pat and kicked Kevin in the genitals outside before they entered and when they did enter, the two married. Later at the reception Shirley turned up looking drunk and defeated, where she boasted that Denise married Kevin out of spite against her and predicted their marriage wouldn't last a whole year.
