Koidu-Sefadu

Koidu, also known as Sefadu is a diamond-rich city located in Kono District, in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. It is the fourth-largest city in the country after Freetown, Bo, and Kenema. The city has an estimated population of 111,800 residents (2004 census). The city is a major centre for diamond minning.

Koidu used to be the third-largest city in the country but it was devastated during the Sierra Leone Civil War. The town was heavily looted and constantly fought over due to the rich diamond reserves in the area. During the peace process, it has rapidly become little more than one massive diamond mine. [1]

While many western private companies have taken interest in diamond mining in Kono, the local government and people have yet to reap the benefit of their land. Efforts to revive the countries richest district have all but failed due to poor leadership and corrupt government. Pioneers such as retired civil engineer Mr. F.D. Konomanyi, former leader of the city's town council and an advocate for social and economic progress, have made attempts to jump start the area's economy by constructing commercial and residential properties for NGO's (Non-Governmental Organizations) such as IRC(International Rescue Committee) , improving roads and bridges for the local people, and building a public park.

American aid workers helped rebuild the Koidu Government hospital, which has improved the previously alarming health situation in the town. Various other aid organizations, including the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR and its partners, have helped drill wells, re-build clinics and schools and regenerate livelihoods in the area, as part of a programme to support the reintegration of Sierra Leoneans who returned after living for several years as refugees in neighbouring countries.
