The 2005 Boston Red Sox season comes on the heels of their 2004 World Series championship. Not only did the Red Sox win the series after a decades-long drought by sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in four games, they beat the New York Yankees four games to three in the ALCS after losing the first three games. No baseball team in history had ever pulled off such a comeback. In preseason polls the Sox were picked first or second in the league, along with the Yankees.
